Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF69, the Thursday 22 December 0920 hours A332 MEL-DEL is delayed until at least 1130 hours, so QF70 back overnight will be tardy.

Flyer, is this principally due to a shortage of available crews, especially cabin crew?

Or some other reason? Effectively, it reduces domestic seats available MEL-PER-MEL as QF9/QF10 would presumably never be full of international patrons. It also means baggage handlers must transfer the ULDs (or perhaps load them in PER for northbound or unloded southbound if luggage requires transfer to or from a smaller domestic aircraft).

Free's up 787 utilization otherwise the aircraft would just sit in MEL overnight.

A333 VH-QPB on the 0935 hours midmorning 22 December QF87 (SYD-ICN) was airborne at 1052 with arrival suggested as 1913 in the early evening, 53 late. On its last four southbound trips, QF88 has been between an hour and 125 minutes late arriving in Sydney so tomorrow morning will see that continue.

QF19 on Thursday 22 took off at 1346 hours so A333 VH-QPC should arrive at about 1838 hours, 68 behind.

The delay may have been due to connecting passengers as the aircraft had arrived in Sydney this morning four minutes early at 0606 hours as QF42 overnight from Jakarta.

A summer thunderstorm at just after 1400 AEDT on 22 December saw water leaking into the passenger area of T1 and elsewhere at MEL.

Carpet in a QF departure area was drenched.

WH Smith and the pub also had water enter either outside or in the pub's case, within.

A Melbourne Airport spokeswoman was blase, stating to the 'Herald Sun' "passengers could still walk through the area while we're cleaning up".

Perhaps not all of an access area from point A to B was affected, but goodness, supermarkets wouldn't let one walk 'through' an area if it was flooded as they'd not want to give shoppers a reason to slip.

On Christmas Day 2011 IIRC, I was departing overseas, and the same sort of leaks occurred.

We know from our houses and apartments that guttering can only cope with so much rain but having been at airports such as BKK and MNL during tropical storms, I've not observed leaks as occur at MEL.

The offices above and what must be the flat roof may be to blame. Having observed apartments/flats over years that leak and have a flat roof, these seem asking for trouble.

Some delays have resulted. QF454 (the 1500 hours MEL-SYD, B738 VH-VYC) took off at 1624 so expected gate arrival is 1729, 64 late.

Perhaps being unrealistic, but given MEL is a commercial building, and its owners have huge wealth, that it can't fix this problem in 11 years is concerning.

At 1730, more heavy storms over MEL.

There have been some diversions - with the competitor, VA736 OOL-MEL was one diverting to CBR - so aircraft may end up tonight being out of position for Friday 23 morning flights.

Happy days.

In micro examples of the delays due to the MEL storms, QF470 (1700 hours MEL-SYD, B738 VH-VYB) had not become airborne by 1814 hours.

VH-VZM on the 1620 hours QF622 MEL-BNE was even more delayed.

It's difficult using the basic BOM site to exactly tell, but looks like another severe storm may hit MEL at 1825 or 1835 AEDT.

QF22 diverted to SYD having a knock on effect for QF93 which I’m on this morning…so far delayed 1.5 hours

On Thursday 22 December 2022, the 1950 hours ICN-SYD QF88 (A333 VH-QPB) took off at 2129 hours so Friday 23 arrival at gate should be at around 0943 hours, 88 late.

Both QFi and JQi have enormous trouble operating punctually on this new route.

A332 VH-EBM on QF52 from SIN down to BNE arrived this morning at 0607 hours, 62 minutes past the timetable.

VH-QPC on QF20 overnight from MNL to SYD arrived at 0709 hours, 54 late as yesterday's QF19 had got to MNL an hour late at 1830.

A332 VH-EBP on QF69 from MEL to DEL on Thursday 22 arrived at 2136 hours, 306 minutes late, so the returning redeye QF70 did not take off until 2330 hours. On Friday 23, MEL gate arrival looks to be about 1652 hours, 287 minutes behind schedule.

B789 VH-ZNE from PER to LHR should be at its arrival gate at 0603 hours, 58 late as last night this 1920 hours flight did not take off until mid evening at 2111. With it originating in PER Tuesdays to Thursdays (not having started from MEL), baggage has to be transferred between aircraft.

Storms yesterday, fog today,
Lots of delays and diversions here this morning

The above fog means domestic flights are in many cases delayed.

QF132, the 0605 hours CHC-MEL diverted to SYD. It then took off from the latter at 1006 hours. At 1118, it remained holding above Mt Buller, Vic with claimed arrival to be 1149 hours, 229 minutes behind schedule.

VH-VYG on the first of the morning's QFd ADL to MEL flights had to divert back to its origin after becoming airborne at 0610 hours. By 1121 hours, it was holding above Minyip in sheep-wheat country (and boy are the crops that can be accessed good!) despite having taken off from ADL again at 1008 hours. Maybe it'll be at gate in MEL by around 1200 'high noon', 255 minutes late.

The knock-on effect of these and many other tardy aircraft will reverberate to much of the nation given something in the order of 40 per cent of QFd's fleet passes through MEL on any given day. It also affects connecting passengers.

Still waiting to depart on the QF93, no more announcements boarding time come and gone.

Let’s see what happens in LAX with service after all these missed connections

Any update @jrfsp? is your aircraft even in MEL?

QF11 also seems delayed.

Aircraft has arrived from SYD, been sitting on board for 45mins, no announcement why we’re just sat here.

Meanwhile connection in LAX well and truly gone

EDIT, waited 20mins for PBD, I had it for all of 10mins to be told “need to collect the glasses”.

30mins later still sat here. So glad I didn’t pay money for this flight!

QF11 departed the gate and then a problem was discovered so it went back to the gate where is remains. Would be the first revenue service for OQG since storage.
