Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Continuing with Monday 22 May 2023, QF1, the 1510 hours SYD-SIN-LHR flagship service operated by an A388 is again delayed, this time to expected pushback from its origin of 1610 hours. This probably means arrival in LHR more than half an hour late.

In more on 22 May, QF1 was airborne at 1639 from SYD so SIN arrival for the A388 will be at around 2237 hours, 67 minutes tardy.

Earlier, QF11 with B789 VH-ZNK was in the sky on its SYD-LAX journey at 1155 for suggested same day arrival at 0739 hours, 34 down.

QF81 was delayed because A332 VH-EBM was late in from BLR as QF68, so 'the 81' was pointing skywards in Sydney at 1301 with at gate SIN arrival expected at around the 1902 hours mark, 49 late.

Continuing with Sunday 21 May, QF25 (A333 VH-QPJ, the 2020 hours SYD-HND) is badly delayed because the aircraft (as usual) arrived late as QF104 from HNL, pulling in to its gate at 1951 hours, 71 minutes behind schedule.
This issue will be alleviated from November when the QF25 changes to a 789 (from QF28 most days).

ZNH was swapped to QF75. The only 789 still in SYD is ZND, which arrived this morning as QF76 from YVR-BNE-SYD. QF73 flight plan hasn't been filed 5 mins from scheduled departure. A delay looming?

QF128 on A388 VH-OQL was cancelled out of Hong Kong last night so didn't make it back to Sydney

QF127 was on time for arrival, initially looks like they delayed it to 0030 from 1940 departure then cancelled it

Thanks!

On Tuesday 23 May 2023, QF127, the 1015 hours SYD up to HKG is said to have A388 VH-OQG and be departing at 1130 hours, 75 late.

Strangely Monday 22's QF128 from HKG is not showing on FR24 as a 'cancellation' but has that infernal description of 'unknown'. FR24 sometimes gets 'confused': this is not the only scanerio with which it has difficulty coping.

Looks like they have upgraded that from an A333 for the extra returning pax

The pattern has been Mon/Wed/Fri on A388 VH-OQL and A333 the remaining days for the last few weeks (and into the next little while)

A388 VH-OQD arrived bang on time in SYD this morning (Tuesday 23 May) at 0510 hours as QF2 from SIN and earlier, LHR, but in forming QF11, the timetabled 1020 hours SYD-LAX, it wasn't airborne until shortly ago at 1326 hours. Same day gate arrival is predicted for 0915 hours, 130 minutes tardy.

A333 VH-QPB is operating QF81 from SYD up to SIN, the 1150 hours in the sky at 1312 this afternoon for estimated gate arrival of 1912, 57 behind.

Colleague QPG is on 'the104' from HNL to SYD that's living up to its behind schedule reputation, with gate arrival tonight suggested as 2006 hours, 86 behind.

QF128 stuck in HK with a faulty generator. Qantas didn't call it until 12:45am, after 3 CX flights heading to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane had departed. They would have know the duty hours of the crew would be over well before then.

Have to give it to the front line CS, trying to keep it professional and dealing with a bunch of very angry customers.

Thank you! Always great to have reports from our 'man or woman on the spot'.

QF and CX don’t play nicely in the sandpit - not overly surprised they let CX go…..

Are you back on QF128 tonight or another means of returning?

Continuing with Tuesday 23 May, QF127 (A388 VH-OQG) arrived HKG at 1857 hours local time, 62 minutes late. QF128 (the 1930 hours) is expected to be delayed a little longer with a revised pushback of 1955 hours (2155 AEST).

While Tuesday's QF9 MEL-PER sector was just a few minutes late, another hour was added on to the delay before B789 VH-ZNE was on it's way on the PER-LHR sector. Estimated delay into Heathrow is down to 38 minutes. This is the same aircraft that was delayed on QF9/QF10 last Friday/Saturday.

Wednesday : while my preferred sources all indicate that today's QF63 SYD-JNB (B789 VH-ZND) was 35 minutes late departing Sydney, FlightAware indicates it will arrive in Jo'burg 15 minutes early, Qantas Flight Status says arrival will be on time & FR24 predicts 9 minutes late !
Time will tell.

With VH-OQL still in HKG, QF is stretched with no buffer for A388's:

OQB: Currently in Syd, will need to operate QF1 this afternoon 24/5
OQD: In LAX to operate QF12
OQG: Currently QF127 to HKG, filling in for OQL
OQH: Currently QF11 to LAX
OQJ: Currently QF1 to land in LHR on 24/5
OQK: Currently QF2 en-route to SIN
OQL: Tech in HKG

There is a respite tomorrow with QF127 to be formed by an A333, before scheduled as an A388 again on Friday. Here's hoping no others go tech and OQL can get fixed up soon enough.

I have a vested interest, I am on QF127 next Wednesday 31/5, which is currently scheduled as a refurb A388 (and has been for some time) so OQL must have been having a break. I guess that could change now

Qf 455 3pm Syd to Mel cancelled. Handled appallingly. Text saying be at the airport 1 hour early to make 2pm flight and this gave people 25 minutes to get to airport. Flight then delayed for 45 minutes. Grghh

You did well to get to SYD airport! Some wouldn't be able to, especially if they were businessmen rushing from some CBD meeting.

B738 VH-VXE is forming the delayed 1400 hours SYD down to MEL. The aircraft was earlier on QF733, the 0850 hours SYD-ADL that arrived at 1054 hours, 29 late, delaying the return working, QF738 (1110 hours ADL-SYD airborne at 1152 hours), which arrived in Sydney at 1358 hours, 28 late. The prediction of you being 45 late away on the 1400 hours seems close to the mark. Overseas, airlines like RyanAir apparently manage 25 minute turnarounds but IIRC they don't carry freight (and mail!) like QFd does.

I assume a couple of B738s have failed.
