Qantas Delays/Cancellations

With VH-OQL still in HKG, QF is stretched with no buffer for A388's:

Tuesday 23 May 2023's QF128 (A388 VH-OQG) took off from HKG at 2123 hours, arriving in SYD at 0757 hours, 62 late, on Wednesday 24, then returning to HKG as QF127. This scheduled 1035 hours flight was airborne at 1137 so expected gate arrival is 1842 hours, 52 late, meaning that the 1930 hours '128' back down to SYD will be delayed unless OQL is repaired in time this afternoon. Unlikely.

In more on 24 May, QF35, the 1200 'high noon' MEL-SIN (A332 VH-EBS) took off at 1243 so gate arrival should be 1834, 34 late.

The B789 on QF7 (mid afternoon: 1540 hours SYD-DFW) is expected to push back at the strange time of 1629 hours.

Tuesday's QF8 DFW-SYD (B789 VH-ZNI) was timely in pushing back in Dallas, but lost time prior to take off, and is losing more time en-route, so now expected in Sydney at 06:56 AEST Thursday morning, 41 minutes late.

Meanwhile QF94 LAX-MEL is shown as delayed 2 hours for a 00:20 PST departure, with an estimated 08:45 AEST arrival in Sydney Thursday morning.

Continuing with Wednesday 24, QF41 (1345 hours SYD up to CGK, A332 VH-EBL) did not become airborne until 1529 hours mid afternoon, so at gate arrival is estimated as 1955 hours, 70 minutes tardy. The aircraft had arrived in Sydney this morning at 0728 hours (83 minutes late) as redeye QF654, the third consecutive flight that it operated 90 minutes or more late. Given the lengthy turnaround time today, I don't know what went wrong.

In more on 24 May 2023, QF139, the often delayed evening 1855 hours SYD-CHC has B738 VH-XZE. It didn't take off until 2117 so bleary-eyed patrons should be at the gate at 0201 hours on Thursday 25, 122 minutes late. The aircraft had a bad day, as on the 0920 hours MEL to AKL QF151 it was95 late arriving, and then operating QF146 from AKL to SYD it arrived exactly two hours late at 1950.

The 1015 hours SYD-HKG QF127 is cancelled on Thursday 25 May, probably due to the problems experienced by A388 VH-OQL that appears to be still in Hong Kong. At least via FR24, QF128 tomorrow night appears to be operating.

QF19 on Wednesday 24 May 2023, the 1215 hours SYD-MNL took off at 1230 hours with A333 VH-QPG. From what I can see, it didn't return to origin but apparently took two hours longer than normal for this flight, arriving MNL at 2053 hours, 123 minutes late. The return QF20 arrived SYD this morning at 0832 hours, 112 minutes late. It may have taken a longer flight routing over Philippines. Perhaps there was congestion at MNL, but I can't see that it did a racecourse circuit holding pattern.

On Thursday 25 May, QF1 is expected to depart SYD an hour late at 1610 hours for SIN and LHR.

QF127 (1015 hours SYD-HKG) was meant to be an A333 today but it's been cancelled.

The 0850 hours from SYD across to AKL, QF143 (B738 VH-VZT) was airborne at 0947 so predicted arrival at gate becomes 1440 hours, 45 minutes tardy.

Wednesday's QF8 DFW-SYD (B789 VH-ZNH) was 23 minutes late pushing back in Dallas, and with further delays en-route is expected into Sydney at 07:01 AEST Friday morning, 46 minutes late.

QF1 on 25 May was airborne at 1635 from Sydney with SIN arrival at gate likely at about 2233 hours, 63 minutes tardy. The scheduled 2330 hours second leg to LHR is optimistically expected to depart at midnight local time.

Not sure if it's related to the storm passing over or very close to Sydney, but on Friday 26 May 2023, QF81, the 1150 hours SYD-SIN (A332 VH-EBP) is not expected to push back until 1430 mid afternoon. This delay is unusual as 'the 81' is one of the more punctual QFi offerings. The aircraft had arrived as QF68 from BLR at 0910 this morning, an amazing 55 minutes early so the winds may have been favourable.

EBQ is on QF67, the 0905 hours SYD-BLR airborne at 0953 midmorning, so gate arrival should be at around 1706 hours, 46 behind with presumably unfavourable winds not assisting.

EBS arrived in SYD this morning at 0618, seven minute early as redeye QF82 from SIN. It has then operated empty to BNE, becoming airborne at 1114 hours and arriving not long ago at 1231. It is forming a much delayed QF51 (normally a punctual runner) that is estimated to depart BNE at about 1330 (optimistic!) for SIN.

Given this late operation of the SYD and BNE A332 flights to Singapore today, at least one departure tonight is likely to be tardy, given as dajop reminds us, one aircraft typically overnights at the latter.

The B789 on the 0940 hours SYD-JNB is not predicted to push back until 1300 hours, so we can back it in QF64 tonight ex JNB will be baldy late.

B789 VH-ZNB on the 1245 hours QF21 MEL-DFW long flight is predicted to depart almost an hour behind schedule.

The expected delay to QF63 SYD-JNB has blown out by a further 130 minutes to pushback on Friday 26 May at 1510 hours, 330 minutes late.

Qantas is showing a 3 hour delay on the return QF64, for arrival back in Sydney at 16:25 AEST Saturday. This will likely lead to a delay for the normal flow-on flight QF7, due to depart at 15:40 AEST on Saturday, although nothing is showing yet.

Edit : The more recent update by Melburnian1 for QF63 makes the flow on delay even more likely.

Friday's QF9 is delayed 115 minutes for a revised Melbourne departure of 17:00 AEST, this delay holds through to a Heathrow arrival at 07:00 BST. Not enough to impact on the return QF10.

In another 26 May delay, A388 VH-OQL is back operating, having been QF128 from HKG arriving early in SYD this morning. However the 1015 hours SYD-HKG QF127 did not take off until 1222 hours at lunchtime, so gate arrival is predicted as 1931 hours, 141 late.

Tonight's QF128 (the 1930 hours ex HKG) is unlikely to depart prior to 2115 hours, though FR24 optimistically suggests '2055'.

QF63 is further delayed to expected pushback in Sydney at 1535, in eight or nine minutes' time as I write.

B789 VH-ZNI finally pushed back at 15:48 AEST 368 minutes late. The delay on the return QF64 has been pushed out to 23:15 local for a further revised Sydney arrival of 19:00 AEST on Saturday.

Edit : Friday's QF7 is now shown as delayed 95 minutes to 17:15 AEST.
Nothing showing as yet for Saturday's QF7 which would normally be taken by ZNI after arrival with QF63.

QF1 (A388 VH-OQG) arrived LHR on Friday 26 May at 0705 hours, half an hour behind time.

A332 VH-EBP on QF81 (1150 hours SYD-SIN) was up up and away later than expected at 1505 hours mid afternoon, with at gate arrival becoming an estimated 2112 hours, 177 late.

VH-EBM is on QF39 (1510 hours MEL-CGK) that was in the sky at 1557 so the estimated 1959 arrival will be 44 late.

QF82, the mid evening 2030 hours redeye from SIN back down to SYD is claimed to instead be pushing back on Saturday 27 at 0120 hours, 290 minutes past the allotted.

'The 52' from SIN down to BNE is forecast to depart 75 late at 2220 hours. The also A332-operated QF36 from SIN to MEL overnight should depart at 2105 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule. Unusual for a mass of ex-SIN QFi flights on these shorter routes down to east coast Oz to be concurrently delayed.
