Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I would have thought for a ~5 hour delay you'd not receive a great deal of compo. For the record it's 6k more points compared to what I received for a 10 hour delay on QF67 when it was running PER-HKG.

Thanks - that's kind of what I thought. I actually called to thank the agent for the 3,500 points, but she was very apologetic and offered more points without my asking. So I was happy about that.

Even with AFF as a point of reference, it has never occurred to me to seek points compensation for a delayed flight. Is this enough to have me banned from AFF? :)

My approach is that these things happen with travel - most of mine is long haul - and it is unlikely that the airline ever wants anything other than on time flights, surely.

So, I plan connections and itineraries with reasonable cushions for short delays. Then, if most flights arrive relatively on schedule and, most importantly, land safely, that's fine by me. :)

On Thursday 6 October, QF1890, the 1700 hours PER - KGI was airborne at 1750 and is expected to arrive at around 1844 in lieu of 1805 hours. Aircraft is B717 VH-NXQ.

A far more lengthy delay was incurred by QF7, the mid afternoon scheduled 1400 hours SYD - DFW that has not long departed at 2057 this evening. Arrival is predicted for 1955 instead of 1335 - same day. VH-OQD is the A388.

As with the changes in times due to daylight saving, QF8 is scheduled to depart DFW at 2115, inevitably it will be delayed on Thursday 6 October but the QF public website has yet to acknowledge this. My guess for a revised, delayed departure time is around 2145, assuming no untoward issues present themselves.

Earlier, QF9's Wednesday 5 October timetabled 1255 hours departure from MEL did not occur until 0230 this morning (7 October) due to the tardy arrival of QF10, so the DXB stop became 0854 to 1031 (the latter being 86 minutes behind time) with predicted LHR arrival of 1450 hours only 35 minutes late after the flight is estimated to pick up almost an hour point-to-point from departing the DXB gate to arriving at the LHR terminal.

The 8 is about to drop into HNL.

I'm guessing medical?

Either medical or equipment.
QF8 will now do a 2 hop mission - DFW-HNL-BNE-SYD

The splash and dash in BNE would then be due to crew running out of hours.

Estimated Ground time in HNL is 2 hr 10 minutes and estimated arrival into BNE is 0630 am.

Friday 7 October sees the arriving QF30 in MEL (ex HKG) that is due at 0900 estimated to arrive at around 1027 with A333 VH-QPH the operating aircraft. It did not become airborne until 2232 last night, 122 minutes after timetabled pushback.

QF is publicly showing QF29 this morning (Friday 7) to HKG departing at 1120, on time, but if QF30 forms QF29, one might expect pushback to be a minimum of 15 minutes late given that the best observed A333 turnaround times appear to be in the region of 65 to 70 minutes.

The much delayed Thursday 6 October SYD - DFW QF7 arrived at 1959, six hours and 24 minutes late. It then departed for SYD after a relatively long turnaround given the unpunctuality at 2301, 106 minutes behind time with SYD Saturday 8 October arrival predicted at 0750, 105 minutes tardy.

Meanwhile the Friday 7 October QF7 is showing as delayed in its pushback from 1400 hours to 1530.

Earlier, the LAX-bound QF11 departed SYD 43 minutes late at 1133; arrival is suggested as 25 down at 0655 same day.

QF127 (A333 VH-QPG), the long established flight from SYD to HKG that is timetabled to pushback at 1105 has only just done so at 1506, 241 minutes tardy, with HKG arrival at gate forecast for 2100 hours this evening, 220 minutes behind time. This will mean a late flight out of HKG back to Oz this evening, although it does not appear that the QF flight status section of its website has been updated to reflect this.

Embarrassingly, the QF delayed HKG-bound flight is queued behind CX100 (B773ER B-KPZ), the 1505 hours SYD - HKG that was airborne at 1525, very punctually.

Relatively late on the evening of Friday 7 October there has been a 'technical problem' at MEL - don't we just love euphemisms - with 'doors' tonight (Friday 7 October) - by which the media or Melbourne Airport may mean 'aerobridges unable to be moved' (with one tweeter asserting that VA, for one did not know the manual override code).

Some passengers may have been stuck on board planes, unable to alight.

VA seems to have been worst affected of the four major domestic airlines, possibly because the fault affected the Melbourne Airport owned terminals rather than the terminal that QF owns.

However QF did not escape entirely with QF494, the 2100 last of the evening MEL - SYDs taking off at 2159 for a suggested close to curfew touchdown of 2255 and a roughly 35 minute late arrival at the SYD gate at 2300 hours. The craft is VH-VYK, a B738.

Meanwhile also on Friday 7 October, longhaul QF10 departed from DXB at 0350 hours, 135 minutes behind the timetabled 0135 hours departure with MEL arrival suggested as 2330, 95 minutes tardy. Aircraft is A388 VH-OQG. The Friday 7 QF9 is predicted to depart from MEL at 0110 hours on Saturday 8 , 75 minutes tardy but arrive LHR on time showing again what can be slackness in these Australia - LHR and back timetables.

QF1554, the 1930 hours CBR up to BNE is having a shocker of a night with take off at 2240 meaning a likely arrival at 2303, 168 minutes late. Aircraft is B717 VH-NXI.

QF418 MEL-SYD cancelled this morning as was a flight to CBR: no reason given. Interestingly, 418 is not on the weekly timetable this evening. Bookings to low???

QF455 SYD-MEL cancelled afet 1 hour delay and delated departures on other flights to MEL due to wind and taxi way works apparently
 
As Melburian 1 mentioned QF127 SYD to HKG 747 aircraft did not depart SYD til after 3pm and based on HKIA website it was at gate at 2102. However how then QF128 departed HKG at 2030? Did the other plane QF 083 ( A330 ??) from SYD form QF128 ???? and QF118 was then formed by the late QF127 ? and departed at 2229 .....as QF118 is usually an A330 not a 747!

There are various compensation avenues... Montreal Convention (although the onus on the airline is pretty weak and easy for them to get out of), Australian consumer law, EU261, or airline goodwill.

The he reason for the delay might not be reasonable, and in those cases, compensation should be forthcoming. Just because it's a plane doesn't mean we should willingly abandon all our rights (or good customer service in the case of goodwill) the minute we hit 'enter' to complete payment.

QF83, the 1115 hours Saturday 8 October SYD - HKG pushed back at 1206. Arrival is forecast as 1810, half an hour late.
