Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Also on Thursday 2 May 2019, QF81 (1010 hours midmorning SYD - SIN) has been cancelled. The QF site shows an '1130' as projected departure and also the word 'cancelled.' This may signify that originally it was hoped to depart at 1130, but in the end the flight had to be given the boot. As a result, tonight's 2110 hours redeye from SIN down to SYD, QF82 is also cancelled.

Although QF12 from JFK to LAX departed on Wednesday 1 May at 1807, three minuites early, and is expected to arrive at 2125, 25 late, the connecting QF12 (different aircraft: A388 not B789), the 2230 hours LAX - SYD has been delayed overnight to an 0900 hours departure on Thursday 2 May. This means estimated SYD arrival of 1705 on Friday instead of 0630 hours, so 635 minutes late.

QF94 to MEL and QF16 to BNE are not showing as cancelled or delayed ex LAX on Wednesday night, so it's likely that depending on available seating, some ex 'the 12' (whether originating in JFK or LAX) will be transferred to these other two flights. Thankfully, it's past Easter and school holidays, so the chance of a greater number of empty seats should be higher.

FlyboyAl and the FlyGirl finally arrived in LAX on wed nite. But it was not "plane" sailing.
We arrived on qf73 with a connection to qf3229 to lax.
After standing in the customs line at SFO for over 2 hours, we missed the connection.
None of the SFO staff could give a stuff about the connection so they were no help.
The Qantas people at sfo were going to send our bags on 3229 but found out they missed it when we told them!!!!!
Very slack service at the airport, so we were told to take them to the bag drop area outside to the right. By this time I'd given up trying to explain anything to anyone, so off we went. The poor guy there looked confused when I told him to put them on the departed flight like I was told to do, but we eventually had a good laugh (yes, i do know about the lack of sense of humor many americans have, so i was careful)
So then it was off to the airtrain with the bags to go to AA to check them in.
The AA lady was fine when we told her about missing the flight (and why), but it got messy when she found QF had not changed us to a later flight.
She was annoyed at the lack of time QF allowed for the transfer.
NOTE TO ANYONE COMING THROUGH SFO FROM OVERSEAS-SHE SAID ALLOW 3 HOURS ABSOLUTE MINIMUM.
Anyway, ended up on an American Eagle flight and arrived at LAX 12 hours later than we should have.
I really can't be mad at anyone about the saga of errors and issues we went through, and whilst I'm normally fairly easy going, I was starting to get hot under the collar at the last issue at AA in SFO.
We have a nice bottle of Jaquard champers in the hotel fridge which the qf73 crew gave us, so we will enjoy that tomorrow after a good nights sleep.

Also on Thursday 2 May 2019, QF4 (B744 VH-OEE) is arriving SYD (ex HNL) at 1804 hours, 64 late, as QF3 was delayed yesterday.

As was the case yesterday, the HNL-bound QF3 is delayed departing SYD. Today it's from 1915 hours to an expected 2010, so QF4 today HNL time coming back is likely to be tardy.

B738 VH-VXH on QF455 (2 May, 1730 hours SYD - MEL in the sky at 1815) is arriving at 1940, 35 late. The next southbound, QF457, the 1745 was airborne at 1836 so a 37 late arrival (1957) is expected for B738 VH-VXA.

QF477 on the same route, the 1815 hours has VH-VXN and took off at 1910, so it should be at its MEL gate at 2030, 40 late.

The number of minutes of delay is similar to a Mensa test sequence.

QF1407, the 1725 hours SYD to BXG was showing as an amended 1745 hours departure but became a cancellation. This may be the first time it's been cancelled. QF1408 back from Bendigo to Sydney tomorrow morning is delayed until 1120 in its departure, with arrival at 1315, three hours late ('normal' departure time tomorrow was displaying as 0825, later than usual). For this flight to run tomorrow morning, there must be a ferry flight (presumably from Sydney).

Friday 3 May is showing QF11 (0935 hours SYD - LAX) as delayed by 25 minutes in its departure. This may be separate from the badly delayed (overnight) QF12 that's presently still in LAX, but due to depart at 0900 hours LAX time on Thursday.

UPDATE: The tardy Thursday night QF3 pushed back in SYD at 2019, 64 late with same day HNL arrival estimated as 0917 hours, 47 late. For the second consecutive night, it's B744 VH-OEE.

FURTHER UPDATE: In his first contribution - a great one at that - AFFer dylarr advised:

Interesting. I noticed this too. Anyone know the reason it QF1407 SYD-BXG was cancelled? You're right in that this is the first time there has been a cancellation on this route.

As for the ferry flight, they're operating it as a scheduled flight QF1409 SYD-BXG (0900-1100) which they are selling tickets to on qantas.com. Once it arrives in BXG it will turn around 20 minutes later to operate as QF1408 BXG-SYD (1120-1315).

The regularly scheduled QF1407 SYD-BXG (1825-2025) also operates later on in the afternoon, but looking at the availability it is completely sold out.

QF56, the Wednesday 1 May 2019 scheduled 2215 hours LAX - BNE pushed back at 2232 but on Friday 3 is not arriving until 0556 hours, 56 late. B789 VH-ZND is the aircraft.

Friday 3 May 2019 finds QF8 from DFW to SYD (A388 VH-OQA) arriving at 0807 hours, 102 late as its 2225 hours scheduled Wednesday 1 departure became takeoff at 0027 on Thursday 2. This aircraft is forming QF11, the 0935 hours SYD - LAX as noted above with an expected delay of 25 minutes in pushback. Basically minimum turnaround so no chance of thorough cleaning in the cabin.

The overnight delayed QF12 (VH-OQI) departed LAX at 0925 hours on Thursday 2 May, taking off within expectations at 0952 with rescheduled arrival forecast in SYD tonight (Friday 3) at 1729 hours, 659 late.

Thursday 2's QF1 flagship departed SIN on Friday 3 at 0012 hours, 17 late but predicted LHR arrival has become 0735, 70 minutes behind schedule. VH-OQF had arrived SIN at 2243 (28 late) but of more relevance is that it did not become airborne until 0113, 61 minutes after Lion City pushback. Most unusual for it to take so long to taxi and queue for ATC clearance.

QF127, the 1020 hours SYD - HKG on Friday 3 May has been delayed by an expected half an hour in pushing back.

Another flight that is often punctual, QF97 from BNE up to HKG is predicted to depart 65 late at 1115 hours with consequent arruval 40 late at 1805 in the early evening.

The 1210 hours SYD - PEK, QF107 should depart at 1300, meaning that QF108 tonight will be at least slightly delayed for its redeye trip down to SYD.

UPDATE: 'The 107' pushed back at 1056 hours, 36 late but is predicted to only be 20 late in arriving HKG at 1820.

QF97's predicted delay has blown out to 1220 hours ex BNE, a time that has just passed. HKG arrival will be at 1910 (105 late) or beyond.

QF1756 BNE-CNS. Delayed from 19:40 to 20:30 and then to 20:55 all over the course of a couple of hours. It's a QFlink B717. A late arrival into Cairns for us tonight

Also on Friday 3 May 2019, QF1, the most often on time initial leg of the London flight, departed MEL at 1549 hours mid afternoon (34 late), taking off quite promptly at 1603 with PER arrival predicted as 1745, half an hour late. Aircraft is B789 VH-ZNG. The second sector is forecast to push back at 1905, only 20 late that based on many previous observations is a little optimistic. It normally takes very close to 90 minutes at the gate for this intermediate stop. Saturday 4 LHR arrival is claimed to be 0530, 25 late.

QF777 (A332 VH-EBN, the 1720 hours MEL - PER) took off at 1822 so forecast at gate arrival is 2011, 41 minutes late.

The 1835 hours 3 May MEL - CBR (QF2132) should be half an hour late in moving off blocks.

QF474, the 3 May 2019 scheduled 1815 hours MEL - SYD was in the sky at 1905 with B738 VH-VZV, so predicted at gate arrival is 2018, 38 late.

QF4 arrived in SYD (ex HNL) at 1743 hours, 43 late.

VH-VXQ (1855 hours MEL - PER airborne at 2005, QF481) should arrive at 2152 mid evening, 47 late.

Looking at the darkened B717 from the J lounge. No crew apparently. Seems to be affecting a number of Qlink flights from BNE tonight.

Once you are underway - I'm trying to be optimistic - I'll be able to ascertain which aircraft it is and hopefully track down what it's done today. It would be helpful if onboard, you asked the flight attendant whether the reason for the (continually extended) delay was that an aircraft had become defective, a pilot shortage, a staff member becoming sick with no available standby replacement or some other cause. If you could report back here, that'd be great. You'll have a really late night: not home/in hotel/with rellies at theirs until 0030 on Saturday morning the way you're (not) going.

Will do. The plane is at the gate in darkness unless that one has gone tech. Been delayed again to 2210. Just got notification of a gate change and a truck pulled up behind the 717 at gate 17 and gate back to 17. Now another gate change back to 21 and back to 17. Pretty funny. Lucky we're both in a relaxed mood :)

Just realised the 717 is at 16. I'm now getting a notification every 30 seconds changing gate between 17 and 21. Up to 23 notifications now!

Also on Friday 3 May, QF1407 (1725 hours SYD - BXG departed 73 late at 1838 with suggested arrival 2050, 85 late.

Thursday 2 saw QF64 (B744 VH-OJU) from JNB depart at 2111 hours, 121 minutes tardy with SYD arrival on Friday 3 at 1704, 129 late. This delayed QF73, the 1740 hours SYD - SFO that pushed back at 1948, an almost identical 128 minutes tardy. SFO arrival (same day) is expected at 1520, 80 late.

The NRT - BNE Friday 3 QF62 pushed back at 2023 hours, 28 late with Saturday 4 arrival likely at 0628, 33 minutes behind schedule.

QF93, the 0900 hours MEL - LAX on Saturday 4 May is delayed until 0930 in its pushback.

B738 VH-VXE had been in DRW since arriving at 0102 hours, eight minutes early on Friday 3 May. It is operating empty - 'ferry' - flight DRW - SYD (QF6116) on Saturday 4, having taken off at 0605 hours.

Hi M1, am on 93 today.
The problem is a bird strike was identified on the walk around. Captain advised not a safety issue, but paperwork needed to send us on way.
At 9.30 told it would be probably be another hour...
