QF80 NRT-MEL 04APR was delayed 24+ hours.
During taxiing to the airstrip it was announced one hydraulic system was leaking. We spent 2 hours on tarmac and were towed to NRT cargo terminal where buses took us back to T2. We cleared custom and finally got baggage back around 0030.
Around 0100 Qantas staff told us they cannot arrange hotels due to being "a week-end and everything is fully booked". They then said we were on our own to find accommodation for the night; reimbursement of $200 per room would be available to those able to find a place, and $50 for transportation/taxi. They then start handling out SLEEPING BAGS so we could spend the night in the terminal. We took this option as we were 2 families of 4, each with 2 kids who were already tired and getting mental being nearly 2am when it was clear the only hotels available were close to Tokyo and it would've takem another hour and most lokely $200 to get there on a cab.
So we fully embraced the 'spirit of Australia' and camped on the floor of NRT T2, our new magic place.
We learnt in the morning the flight was to leave on 1600 05APR. Around noon the flight was further delayed to 1950. Finally, further 30 mins were added while waiting at the gate, so we started boarding at 1955 and finally departed at 2107, more than 24 hours later the original schedule.
