Qantas sends fares soaring

QANTAS has jacked up domestic airfares, adding $22 to a standard fare between Melbourne and Perth.
The fare increases come despite a predicted $1.23 billion profit.

Economy and business fares have jumped 3 per cent - a move tipped to add at least $20 million a year to the national carrier's coffers.

But discount red e-deals for Melbourne to Canberra, Adelaide and Hobart remain unchanged.

And of course Qantas isn't set to reduce fuel fines on domestic sectors (although, they are set to reduce the fine to/from HKG by $US1 tomorrow I think).

The article though is slightly incorrect. The true increases are:

The average increase in fares is as follows:

* Business Class - 3 percent
* Fully Flexible - 1 percent
* Flexi Saver - 2 percent

(although this may vary on different sectors)

They need to pay for their A380's and 787's somehow. Really, 3% is inline with inflation so I guess its reasonable.

Just had a look at the prices then - It mentions in the article that MEL-BNE has been upped. (My 'regular' route)
The prices look the same to me ($150/$170 Red e-Deal, $205 SS), except for Business (Now over $1000!!).
I've always wondered about that - a Business fare MEL-BNE i believe is WAY out of proportion to a lot of other destinations. You can actually travel cheaper MEL-SYD-BNE in business, than going directly! (And it gives you 2x SC's, and approx 2x FF points!)

That's red-e-deal? Not due to be increased (price sensitive end of the market - not as easy to increase!)

I guess its people who are price insensitive -not who can afford. Given the limited umber of carriers gving J seats out of perth domestically and the resources boom they are great short term targets -
sadly short term is the view. Just think if you were a global pax who can see he is being screwed - I just wonder who you will book your next J overseas seat with. Yep you will be screwed on that as well by all carriers - but at least its not by the guys that just took $20 out of your pocket...

DRW-CNS is just as bad - red"e"deal is $360 one way and biz $1000+, at least there is competition on most other routes to keep the cheap fares cheap. Mount Isa has the same problem!

Try PER business class prices. I guess the number of sectors that have 'D' available for purely domestic sectors is quite limited.

D class does exist into/out of PER, but it's available for fares like DONEx's or DGLOBnn's.

I don't believe the DOX fare (e.g. available between SYD-MEL, CBR-SYD) is available PER-<east coast>.

That would be consistent with the observations made by josh.

Not quite in relation to SC's and QFF points ...

It would have been true up until May 2005 when direct travel between MEL/BNE earned the same SC's as MEL/SYD and SYD/MEL. c.f. 10/20/40 SC's.

These days a direct flight between MEL and BNE earns 15/30/60 SC's, so the DOXx2 route earns 80 SC's against 60 for the Direct J route.

Also, paid J/D travel has a mininim earn of 1250 QFF points, so the DOXx2 route earns 2½K QFF points while the direct route earns 1250 for a NB (1933 for a WP).
