Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I am a qantas FF member and always said that I would not fly Emirates, not becuase of their service but more so safety. The near miss at Melbourne a few years ago when an Emirates A340 taking off wiped out stuff at the end of the runway and then nearly the aircraft was a very near miss. Searching on the web, it is not the first time Emirates have done this and the air safety investigation highlighted that Emirates is at the top end in terms of hours flown per month by their pilots and it was pilot error that nearly caused this incident and sent shivers up me when I realised how close to major disaster this could have been reading the report.

Sure Qantas have had a few incidents but the A380 engine issue over Singapore was a Rolls Royce fault not Qantas. The only accident I can think of that was a Qantas pilot error was when a 747 went looking for the 19th hole during a storm at a golf course near Bankgok Airport some years ago,

We will still be flying daily Sydney/Melbourne to London on our A380 aircraft. The flight will now be rerouted to go through Dubai as opposed to Singapore. So you will still be flying comfortably on an A380 plane with the Qantas Skybed. And get your freepyjamas.:D

Comment for Red Roo. For those of us who booked flights that will be impacted prior to this announcement, I hope that allows us to make modifications or even cancellations without the usual penalty or where, in cases like freepyjamas, some reimbursement if their booking for a 380 is downgraded to a 777/747 or whatever.

OK, RedRoo already responded. But the comment does assume they wanted to go via Dubai and not Singapore. Maybe they planned to go to Singapore on the A380! Maybe even booked their hotel on a non refundable basis.

Just catching up here and from reading one of the ASX releases, I've found that they have put a "limit" on the partnership of 10 years?

All these partnerships have time frames, and are reassessed. I don't think the ACCC would give its blessing on something that didn't have a time limit, as it enables the ACCC to have a look again, to see if the environment has changed. As and example, the JSA, for example, was rolled over a few times.

Hope not.
I booked a trip in June 2013 on QF in J to LHR via SIN... paid more specifically to be on the A380 (as you do). If they're going to replace that with a different aircraft, or one with Skybed MkI, I'll be pretty peeved. Wouldn't have booked otherwise.

I'd be happy if the re-furbed 747's went to SIN from MEL. Hopefully not too many A330's!

There have been more instances then just QF1 in BKK.

You can find the info in the ATSB, I can think of an overweight 330 not too long ago, the 767 crew who just about to lower their landing gear coming into SYD last year was it.

It does happen, just not as high profile.

Is there any time frame for the above answers? Days, months etc etc? :)

The dust needs to settle here a bit first and as soon as I have an update, I will let you know. It will not be days but it will not be 6 months either. Sorry I don't have any additional details at this stage.

I see that Skywards members will only earn points / receive benefits when part of an international journey.

Must be because Skywards has the "traditional" method of earning status - i.e. just on number of miles travelled. Without this conditions, Australians would have the choice of choosing Skywards for earning status with long-haul economy flights.

As with previous changes, QF have always had a list of options prepared.

I am thinking of the pulling out of EZE and the reduction of JFK ops as two examples. QF had it laid out the options for these cases.

Here's a coffee table / few beers question for the brains trust - how many people think that the QF/EK alliance anti-trust immunity will be approved by the ACCC?

The VA/EY partnership was certainly not without a few bumps and opposition, though I guess their application was still fairly novel and thus easily passable. This is a different matter.

Glad to see the AF partnership end. I don't think that was an airline worth associating with.

Now...who's lining up hungrily with their points (or banking up points) to try and snare some EK F seats (even if only for Classic Awards)?

N.B. since most of these will be going on QF ticket stock (QF codeshares operated by EK), like the VA/EY alliance my suspicion is that we will all still have to pay QF YQ on such awards. Better be worth that onboard shower and gold-lining!

Another thing on top - I assume EK do a lot of A380 maintenance at home? Makes it easier to ask for a cup of sugar.... errr, I mean, spare part... when you're asking from your friend, not the enemy (cf. Singapore).

The FAQs offer some insight, particularly 23 and 25. To me, the answer to question 23 says Qantas Club members will have EK lounge access.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out as I think it is very unclear. eg Will a QC member have lounge access in say Munich when travelling on EK on a QF codeshare? As EK lounge access is already one of the most restricted around I just cannot see this happening.

That cheers me up.

I've no idea how all this is going to affect CX.......I'm happy with my last minute (red induced) decision on Friday to toast 520,000 points to get 4 x J seats to HKG later this month.

Hopefully CX award seat availability remains the same as they are very low hanging fruit!

We understand that some people may not be able to/ want to fly through Dubai for particular reasons. And we are more than happy to discuss what options we have for those customers.

The question remains what aircraft will QF use for SYD-SIN-SYD ?

Hi K3nnis,

I do not have that specific detail at this stage. More info will come out over the coming weeks as we work through all the changes.

Cheers,
Red Roo

So the answer to my question is no, there will be no more A380s to SIN? For those of us who fly to SIN and not all the way to London.

I do not have the detail on Syd/Mel - SIN aircraft at this stage. As soon as I have it, I will share it with you all.
