Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I think if QF pulls the A380 for the SYD-SIN route, I will probably fly SQ A380 on that route.

In our discussions Tim and I came up with a guiding principle for this partnership: Treat each other's customers as your own

I really hope they take this to heart. Most of these "partnerships" are like signing a "friendship agreement" with Sheldon Cooper. Now who wants something like that?

Our two airlines will, of course, retain their distinct style and identity, but we will match key customer benefits

Where there is a difference in customer service, we've agreed to make the higher benefit our standard.

Qantas, get priority boarding and luggage correct.

Emirates, please don't lose our luggage.

Speaking of luggage, IIRC EK Y pax can carry 30 kg of baggage. (In fact, broadly speaking, EK pax can carry at least 10 kg more than their equivalent pax on QF international services, excluding the piece-system Americas).

If consistency is what they are after, what's going to happen with the baggage allowances? (I think WPs are going to be reigned in a bit...)

If flying to some European destinations means 1 less stop, l'm all for it. Nothing worse than flying over your destination to LHR, then backtracking.....

I'm a Y traveller.
Will it be possible to fly SYD-DXB-LHR on EK, since their product is better than QF's, and earn the same amount of QFF points?
What would be the point of flying QF on the first leg?
Bumping this question :)

Bumping this question :)

Out of interest, what makes 3-4-3 seating in Economy on a 777 then 3-4-3 seating in a 380, considering that the 380 is a wider aircraft?

Saying that where else does EK fly their 777 in AU apart from PER?

Yes, prima facie it's a great move and the share price agrees. One would hope for codeshares into all major euro/african cities surely.

Seems a better deal for QF. I wonder if EK is banking on a change in mindset with a change in government to allow a modification to the Qantas sale act, at least within the next 10 years.

Whilst we're on questions of consistency (baggage is one), here's a pot stirrer:

Q19 of the FAQ refers to priority check-in. Notice that QF Silvers are not included. But it is a gazetted benefit that QF Silvers can use at least international priority check-in counters, or Business counters.

Cue the not too happy plebians.

FWIW I wonder if EK Silvers get such a benefit.

Hey anat0l

This is just an accidental omission, Silver members will get priority check-in in also.

Cheers,

BNE, SYD and soon ADL are two, with BNE being at the lovely time of 3AM back to SIN.

I think it is a great move by Qantas - they seem to get a lot more out of it than Emirates.
Given Emirates ownership, its corporate strategy is as much about Dubai as it is the airline (similar to Singapore's), and they are extremely long term oriented (i.e. Dubai's future after oil).

So I would not underestimate the value that EK places on QFF's loyalty position, particularly when measured against emerging threats from Chinese cities/airlines targeting the Australian market. So for EK, it is possibly more about what they have to lose, than the small amount that they will immediately gain?

they really need to keep A380 on SYD-HKG to effectively compete with CX, moving to 330s would be suicide given the age of some of them versus CX have all 4 frequencies on their new product.

If they keep the A380 for SYD-HKG then I have a feeling the SYD-SIN will not have the A380.

Would you state the same for the 777 product compared to the QF Y product?
Never flown EK's 777, sorry :(

Why not join skywards if you like better ?
Because my final destination is not LHR, and flying QF to LHR then code share with BA to my final destination has been cheaper so far than flying EK to either LHR or CDG, and then code share with AF to my final destination.
With this new code share, let's see what the new fares look like... That could be a good point actually, thanks for the suggestion scwappy :)

I'm not really up-to-date with the 744 refurb program, but would they be able to send some of them to HKG/SIN?

And we do get some EK 777s here in SIN, and from what I've heard of it (not sure which version of the 777), it's "a sh!tty little plane" according to my boss.

On the whole it seems pretty good. Of course the devil is in the details. With this agreement and MH joining OW it makes things easier for me. Most of my international flying at the moment is on a mix of QF, MH and EK.

What flights will Qantas keep flying from Australia to SIN? Will this open things up for more Jetstar flight to SIN?

If only EK433 was rescheduled to a better time, a 2:30am departure is no good. Even 1am or 6am would be better.

Perhaps now there is justification for Emirates to fly an A380 to BNE.

Will BA consider dropping SIN-SYD now that I assume there will be no QF codeshare after the JSA ends?
