Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

BNE isn't really rated for A380 operations, so probably won't happen for a while.

Better not tell QF then who occasionally divert there :). Brisbane is A380 ready and has two aerobridges and an EK lounge designed to support A380 ops (direct from lounge to upper deck boarding).

Qantas more or less abandoning Brisbane as a "1 stop to Europe" gives me no choice but search for another airline.
Even as a WP Qantas is making it hard for me to fly anywhere with them out of Brisbane.

Don't EK fly through BNE?
I know it's not QF and I know it's not an A380, but it does have 1st class as I recall

It is I, Leclerc !

Red Roo when will passengers affected be able to change their flight to London should they wish not to travel via Dubai ?...Thanks in advance

If your silver and QP member do you get into the PUB if flying economy on EK in Dubai

I'm not really up-to-date with the 744 refurb program, but would they be able to send some of them to HKG/SIN?

QF do already fly some of the 744s to both HKG (ex SYD) and SIN (ex BNE). However they tend to be the unrefurbed versions more than the blinged-up ones.

Most of the refurbed aircraft are the ERs, which are primarily dedicated to DFW-BNE/SYD, LAX-BNE and SCL-SYD.

Two flights, one direct mid evening, one via SIN at 0230.

Hey Red Roo,

In the announcement today it mentions end to end status recognition, does this mean my qantas status will appear on my EK boarding pass, or will it be like existing code-share partners (excluding One world) where it just has your FF number and the airline has no idea of your status (except for your FF card?).

If it is not going to be displayed on the boarding pass I'd be interested to know how QF will ensure end to end recognition of status whilst on-board an Emirates route? or maybe we have to sticky tape our QFF cards to our heads so the Emirates staff know what our benefits should be. :D :D

Otherwise I am very excited about this announcement, good stuff! :)

Hi everyone,

- Qantas will contact you to discuss options if you have a flight affected by the changes. We will do this well before your travel date.

We will still be flying daily Sydney/Melbourne to London on our A380 aircraft. The flight will now be rerouted to go through Dubai as opposed to Singapore. So you will still be flying comfortably on an A380 plane with the Qantas Skybed. And get your freepyjamas.:D

We understand that some people may not be able to/ want to fly through Dubai for particular reasons. And we are more than happy to discuss what options we have for those customers.

Whilst personally I have no problems transitting throuh Dxb (and have previously), I suspect a significant number of OZ passengers have no great desire to transit or in particular stopover in Dxb for various cultural reasons:shock:. These same people will have no hesitation in stopping over in Sin between Sydney / Melbourne and London to break up the long journey......I think QF will lose these pax to SQ, TG and MH.

I feel this has been a very bold move by Qantas. For all AJs detractors (and I am one), I think he has made a strong, strategic move here. He has swallowed his pride, thrown a big punch at VA and announced something positive and significant for QFi (for a change).
.......and for that he should be commended. I think there are dangers of QF Business PAX enjoying the EK product just a bit too much, but that is probably a risk worth taking; it's not like they were kicking any goals with their former strategy.

I think these are 3 unsung, but very valuable outcomes of the agreement so far:

1. QF have landing/departure rights to DXB T3. This is a HUGE win and if there is a better arrivals hall in the world, I'm yet to see it. Every other non-EK airline has the old terminal 1.

2. "Will Qantas still fly to Asia? Yes. Previously our services to Singapore and Hong Kong were timed to optimise travel through to Europe. We will retime our existing services to Singapore and Hong Kong offering an improved schedule dedicated to better meet the needs of the Asia market."

I think this improved schedule is something most of us have been screaming about for years. To think that we might be only months away from having a QF flight from OZ arriving into SIN before their current 7.00pm-11.pm window! Huge.

3. I'm not sure on this but it looks like for Qantas OW FFlyers, we have just opened up Africa, India, the MiddlEast and Sao Paolo as one stop earning/spending destinations. Maybe not SCs yet for all these destinations but certainly points.

I am currently booked SYD - LHR (QF1 I think) 10 th march. No problem. But will return 7th April LHR-SYD , I wonder, does that mean I come back via DXB now not SIN?

While people might have a preference for a stopover in Singapore because they want to see the country, I don't see what cultural issues prevent people from transiting Dubai.

We are really looking forward to seeing it.

As far as losing people to SQ etc, that has already happened in Adelaide where the direct International Qantas service is non existent.

I love the plan, two thumbs up here.

I'm pleased that this should mean additional Qantas International widebody service ex-MEL. We currently have 1 daily to SIN/LAX/HKG. Now we will have one daily to DXB/LAX/HKG and I PRESUME SIN. Will be quite interesting to see what MEL-SIN will be operated with but I guess they have a few spare 747's with the ending of the Frankfurt service. Will be nice to have the Qantas 747 back as we don't have any at the moment her in MEL. Perhaps we will even get a late night overnight flight from MEL to SIN with a day return from SIN... this POTENTIALLY could mean the F lounge will be open all day until late evening like it once was. I can only hope...

A year is a long time in Politics, even longer in the airline industry, just over a year ago QF were going to build a better Qantas with four pillars:

2.Strengthen Asia (Invest in a new Asian premium airline.)
3.Deepen and broaden alliances with LAN and BA, including strengthening the JSA!

I hope the other pillars are still going OK:

1. Customer Excellence
4. Ongoing Business Improvement

I see this as a positive move, however I do wonder what will be the picture in a years time! At least the lounge access with issues with BA have some logic to them now.

I don't know what "pillars" Joyce is referring to but the Emirates press release quotes him as saying "The partnership delivers on all four pillars of the Qantas Group’s international strategy". As pointed out above, it seems completely at odds with points two and three.

Doesn't SYD-SIN justify a A380 for QF? Is SYD-HKG a busier route?

Post EK tie up I would say that SIN would struggle to justify an A380. I reckon only about 1/4 of all PAX on the current flights are ending up in SIN with the rest going somewhere else.

With Hong Kong however Qantas has a partner in CX, although yes not a close one. So do have someone to offload their passengers onto.

The big question however is what will happen when the QF-MH thing comes into play. Will Qantas serve KL as that would be the logical place to take connecting passengers wanting SE Asian

BNE isn't really rated for A380 operations, so probably won't happen for a while.

My understanding is that the only airport restriction stopping BNE being used for regular A380 operations is that its current fire fighting rating is category 9. So is ok for planes up to 747 size, while an A380 needs category 10 for regular operations. Category 9 is sufficient for diversions. Airservices Australia is in currently in process of upgrading BNE and PER to category 10.
