Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I think it is brilliant not having to go through Heathrow to get to Europe, and having so many access points into Europe from Dubai. I tried doing our booking through Qantas last week and it was impossible. We had to go 'around the world' just to get to Turkey and return.

I assume the AY codeshare SIN-HEL will remain in place?

I am a bit neither here-nor-there. It think on one hand it is great for QF (who I do have a loyalty to) to help them raise their bottom lines. One stop is okay, especically to some of the destinations (Dusseldorf or Hamburg appeal to me), however I've always been a happy connector as opposed to flying direct (more points!)

Anything that avoids LHR is a good thing you gotta admit, but then again I am a smart enough traveler to know how to avoid it as well... :)

However, I am iffy about flying to Middle Eastern countries which have rather bad human rights records (specifically Gay & Lesbian rights - after all these are countries that exicute you for being who you are). For the record I am not really keen on the Chinese airways either.

Pity EY doesn't fly to Berlin - that would certainly win me over. ;) (We can only live in hope they'll look into it once Brandenburg opens!)

Interesting the number of people across various forums today that say they will not fly via Dubai on principle ... for a range of human rights reasons.

Flying through SIN to LHR was know as the "kangaroo" route, does that mean flying through DXB becomes the "Magic Carpet" route?

Subject to approval your return flight would be through DXB. Qantas will contact you prior to discuss your options.

I am currently booked SYD - LHR (QF1 I think) 10 th march. No problem. But will return 7th April LHR-SYD , I wonder, does that mean I come back via DXB now not SIN?

It is I, Leclerc !

You are aware of Singapore and Thailand's human rights record? Noone seemed to be up in arms about those when flying through them. I'm not even going to begin on Australia's current state of human rights with asylum seekers and the Indigenous population.

Interesting that the the other objections here about EK's (misinformed) practices during Ramadan, and yet again an over emphasis on alcohol.

As much as this opens up a whole world of convenience for the majority, the AFFer in me would still probably fly to say, Paris, as follows (for the increased status credits and F lounge):

BNE-MEL-DXB-LHR on QF (would most likely earn 15SCs+45SCs+30SCs - 90SCs)
LHR-CDG on BA (booked in Y but doing a cheap upgrade to I for the J SCs) - 40SCs
CDG-LHR on BA (same as above - 40SCs)
LHR-DXB-MEL-BNE (same as above, ensuring to change flight numbers in DXB) - 90SCs.
Total: 260SCs

No doubt the booking engine will soon default to BNE-DXB-CDG-DXB-BNE, which will net only 45SCs+30SCs in each direction (150SCs total return - provided that SCs can be earned on this route on EK). While I can certainly see how having Europe (excl. LHR) available as a one-stop destination may be attractive to many, living in BNE means that the only way to achieve this is to avoid QF metal completely. As a QF WP, I'm particularly loyal to QF, so if they have one of their own aircraft flying to the same part of the world that I'm headed to, I really don't mind an additional transit or two if it means being able to travel on QF metal. Nothing particularly against EK metal flights (and I'm not saying that I would never fly with them if they were associated with QFF), but I didn't invest so much time and money into my QF flying to suddenly switch all my long-hauls to EK. Either way, QF still wins as they are attracting those who favour one-stop flights, they will have a new huge airline as part of QFF, and they will still earn business from those like myself who simply prefer QF flights, and are willing to fly the long way.

I was also planning a trip in April that would have been comprised of a minimum of 3 bookings (as I wanted to visit HKG, DXB and LHR, while still earning QF points and SCs):

QF BNE-SYD-HKG-SYD-BNE
CX HKG-DXB-HKG
BA DXB-LHR-HKG

Perhaps this could soon be consolidated on a single QF booking as BNE-SYD-HKG-DXB-LHR-DXB-SYD-BNE, with the HKG-DXB leg operated by EK on a QF codeshare (as QF don't seem interested in ticketing CX on this route). This could potentially save $1-2k, so I'm not complaining if that's the case! :D

The SC's earn on DFW-DXB are yeat to be confirmed.

As per P/F's Twitter conversation:

PF's question was whether code shares would get SC's. This has been responded to by Red Roo....so i assume by the response below if you are on a EK flight with QF flight #, you will earn credits....

- As with all our partners, you will earn SC as long as booked on QF flight numbers

Any particular questions, I am around to answer.

Cheers,
Red Roo

Neither Thailand or Singapore, as far as I'm aware though execute people based on sexual preference either.

I'll point out I'm 'iffy' - not 'hard core militant against'. I'm a pragmatist (and selfish) in many ways. :)

Falcon route. :)

I posted Emirates Policy about Ramadan a few pages back so no comments since.

Does it need ACCC approval, I think it would. This tie up will give QF and EK about 50% of the market. I cannot see ACCC agreeing??
Also I know that people travelling to Scotland (baby boomers going home for holiday) are filling 2 flights a day to Glasgow. QF may get some of this, I know I will be interested??

PS what is better QF J or EK J, on a 380 of course.

My inbox is taking a bigger beating then Robin Givens at the moment with all the notification messages from this thread!!! LOL

Need to switch it off!

I'm interested in this question also, I have only flown J on 777. As I've stated previously I think EK Y is streets ahead of QF Y ( and the harshest critics the little PF's agree). I think there is a huge potential gain for QF in picking up the regional UK and European flyers from SYD and MEL to DXB. To capitalise they will need to integrate better with EK than the current JSA arrangements with BA eg. QP access.

While the JSA with BA is clearly ending, what about QF and BA codeshares? Do we assume that after March, that any BA operated flights AU-Asia-UK will no longer carry QF codeshare numbers? Conversely, will QF operated flights carrying BA codeshares (eg SYD-SIN, SYD-HKG) end?
