Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

With a wife and daughters, Dubai is not a place I want to be hopping off the plan on my way to and from London. I think Qantas bosses have underestimated the fact that a large number of people will just not transit via the war ravaged middle east. Have previously used SIN. Also used Tokyo in the past too but QF took away PER - NRT, ruining my annual ski plans. I need an airline that will get me to London, North America and Japan from Perth. It seems Cathay is a good bet - one stopover at HKG and one airline. Gee whiz, Qantas sure does know how to lose customers!

Sorry, but that statement is pretty off the mark.

First of all have you been through DXB as an airport? Hardly war ravaged.

Secondly, if people from PER are so conscious about not going through DXB on their way to Europe, why is EK looking at adding another daily flight, and potentially being the first carrier to utilise the 380 into PER.

Funny, some people will never be happy...

Now the 787-9 cancellation makes more sense, no need for their own metal when they can simply code-share with EK

At the same time, Virgin Australia has a fleet of 5 x 777-300ERs and does quite well with code-shares

I am very undecided on this, but will be interested to see how I can burn the x,xx_,xx_ Qantas FF points I have sitting in my account. Hopefully the burn rate is the same as current QF burn rates and it's not "enhanced" due to this new "alliance"

12 x A380's can service Qantas until 2020 or a little later

The refurbished 747's can leave around 2017 as 5 years is not a bad period for depreciation on their current refit!

I understand what you are saying to a point!

Qantas only flew to NRT because Margaret Jackson's husband owned one of the ski resorts/real estate areas in Niseko!

Now back to Dubai, it's an area I would like to visit, but speaking to quite a few people over the years, yes I agree they are "scared" of that part of the world! My mother is one of them and I guess the "older generation" would be a large part of this group.

However, once I got her to fly EK instead of QF, now she demands that I book her on EK instead of QF and has her first EK A380 flight in November :)

Anyway for now my view is I have no interest in transiting Middle East for any trip. Just leaves few more choices to go via Asia.

Medical bracelet for JohnK: <whatever medical conditions>. Nil transport by any Jetstar. Nil transport via Middle East.

Well you can always fly CX or BA if you so insist. Or, join Star Alliance, and/or fly SQ (SQ Y is pretty good - except the earn is usually "non-existent") or TG. Or fly VS via HKG (levering your VA Platinum).

Red Roo, if you are still around and collecting feedback, here's one for your loyalty and lounge boffins: there are some people who are oneworld Emeralds not in the QFF program (e.g. BA Golds, AA Exec Platinums, etc.) but will obviously fly QF1/QF2 or QF9/QF10. When these services transit via Dubai Terminal 3, there will be Emirates lounges in the terminal which QF elites can use, but since these are not oneworld lounges, other oneworld elites flying QF services (in Economy or Premium Economy) that go via Dubai will not have any lounge access (compared to that they would normally have if they were flying via Singapore). What will be done to accommodate these customers?

Trust you to spoil the party :p
These customers will of course return to the QF fold seeking LTP

The BA stalwarts on FT started it. They are not very happy about it. I thought it was the responsible thing to do. (Yes, I'd like to keep the lounge just EK and QF members only, too - we could use less whinging Poms... err, I mean, BAEC members :p )

Otherwise, UK residents can't join QFF, or a number of us may be expected to "billet" some BAEC members. ;)

You accept everything that is thrown at you?

Some people don't.

And what is the point of Qantas Platinum?

Status bonus is non existent on CX and BA and most of the cheap airfares do not even earn mileage.

If you read back in the thread, you'll see that they cater to the needs of all cultures.

Although, I'm not sure how Emirates would feel about Aussies in stubbies, singlets and thongs and, God forbid, hi viz! (Just trying to crack a funny, not wanting to engage the dress debate.)

Only one code share is being dropped which is Rome. As Qantas and Cathay are still both OneWorld points earn will stay as is.

There was also the AF SIN-CDG codeshare. That's also being axed.

Well it might as well be the size of a shoe box - at least BAEC members will get a nice new lounge.

I suppose there is always J* to fill the void;)

Isn't it likely that QF will use either the A330 or the QF5 747s to service SIN - ie no F. What will QF use the refurbed F lounge for - their 3K hub?

In reference to the Singapore F lounge, I'd be surprised if the refurb plans changed for the worse. Qantas has said Asia remains a priority and, at this stage, there will still be plenty of QF services to and from SIN. As is, there's double-daily from PER, thrice weekly ADL, double (?) daily BNE and then MEL and SIN on top of that. QF would (surely) still want to look after their Emeralds in SIN, even if there is no F.

There's some deep thinking. The FAQ says reciprocal lounge access and 'we'll treat each others' passengers as our own' so there's hope you would get lounge access in DXB (by oneworld status), even if on the EK flight number.

I was talking about food and beverages ... what were YOU talking about?

Some people don't.

A famous person who epitomised your attitude ended up committing suicide with a bullet to the head and a cyanide pill.

Facetiousness aside, the answer to your question is no. I'm prepared to give this new system a go as a minimum.

And what is the point of Qantas Platinum?

You tell me - you don't accept everything that is thrown at you, right?

Status bonus is non existent on CX and BA and most of the cheap airfares do not even earn mileage.

BA earns status bonus (for WPs, it is consistent; for SGs, slightly less). I think all BA Economy fares earn, but they do so at 0.25 points per mile (thank goodness status bonus is there to make it up to reasonable).

People are suggesting EK disc whY fares may also earn .25, which if that turns out to be the case is no different :)

That would be unfortunate, though that said if Status Bonus were also applicable on such fares, that would offset a bit of the hurt. If EK marketed disc Y fares were cheap enough, people may not mind.

Notwithstanding the JSA, this would mirror the dilemma QFFers would have when booking BA services (QF codeshare, or BA ticket?)

I wonder what will happen to us top enders? We have JQ to SIN, no real hope of getting a service to DXB is there?! Guess that will have me stuck on BA metal for the SIN LHR leg.

Roll on the 787 Dreamliner Darwin to London direct route...

Growing with Asia is one of their strategy pillars. Not sure this helps out, and I think there will be more to come on what is going to happen with Asia.
Let's wait and see but I have no confidence in this management of being able to make a competent decision to save their lives.

Ironically they must've been making some sort of said decision otherwise they would've well and truly been dead by now, especially Joyce and Clifford.

In fact, until today, I really thought Joyce was pushing his luck on his right to live.

A famous person who epitomised your attitude ended up committing suicide with a bullet to the head and a cyanide pill.
Why would I contemplate suicide? Because I despise Jetstar and have no interest in transiting the Middle East? Or is it me not sugar coating reality to trick myself into feeling better?

You tell me - you don't accept everything that is thrown at you, right?
Meaning?

I think you will find that 100% of nothing is nothing. But I believe the status bonus on BA has a very good chance of disappearing once the JSA is over.

Haters gonna hate... At least there'll be more room in the QPs and F lounge for the rest of us... SIN and DXB are really just like for like, one sterile city for another. Not a fan of either, but then if I wanted a stopover, DXB probably has it by the whisker with more choice of resorts just to chill out. And it's less humid.

Personally I really like the agreement with EK. One stop flying to so many new destinations opens up a whole new customer base.

Now that they've got South America, Nth America, Europe, Africa and Middle East sorted, looking forward to what they will do with Malaysia Airlines at the end of the year when they come on line into OW. Hopefully they'll be the Asia Partner rather than 3K :-/
