Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Is it just me, but wouldn't it be reasonable to think they would have sorted this obvious SC issue out before any announcements regarding codeshares?
One would have thought so, but... it is Qantas so I guess we need to make allowances for mismanagement...

So this is the hot thread of the week. The beginning of the end for Qantas as an airline.

Qantas may as well not bother having any aircraft at all and just sell codeshare flights both domestic and international operations. Think of all the money they could save. And they will not even need a CEO either.

Very, very poor....

Disagree, I think this may be a move which keeps QFi going. QF needs this relationship far more than EK, having an alliance with a strong airline in a good position geographically will do them wonders. The closest thing they had woth OW was CX out of HKG, and we all know how QF and CX love each other there...

Qantas had to do something, and I would think that this doesn't halt their slide, then nothing will..

Greetings one and all!

Personally, I think this is the best news (hopefully I'm not disappointed by the detail). The opportunities for 1 stop connections to Europe are fantastic - in fact the lack of these connections in the past is the reason I have never flown QF to Europe unless my destination was London.

I'm a QF and EK regular and suffer from chronic economyclassitis and for those wary of Emirates, I can assure you there is nothing to fear from EK's 777s (maybe I'm a freak, but I prefer the 777 J seats to their 380s), cabin service or Dubai.

I can't wait for April next year!!

Welcome to AFF :D
Weirdly enough I personally know several people who are exactly like you ;)

One opinion in millions, but this nicely affirms my recent switch to DJ domestically and Star/Sky internationally...

One wonders if the nice treatment QF WP's received on CX may spiral downhill now ;)

My concern is what happens to QFF Status people on EK. I don't have much status but I like being able to select seats and not end up wedged in the back corner.
I don't think that will be a priority for Qantas management. A few other things to worry about such as

- Lounge access
- Status bonus
- All economy booking classes to earn full points (~22,000 QFF points is not as attractive as ~43,000 QFF points)

To me it just sounds like it's not been said, because it's not going to happen.....
I guess that raises an interesting question - what other aircraft in the QF fleet besides the A380 have the range to do Perth - Dubai for instance if they decide to put QF metal on the route (assuming they left room in the agreement to do that - one would hope so...)

With a wife and daughters, Dubai is not a place I want to be hopping off the plan on my way to and from London. I think Qantas bosses have underestimated the fact that a large number of people will just not transit via the war ravaged middle east. Have previously used SIN. Also used Tokyo in the past too but QF took away PER - NRT, ruining my annual ski plans. I need an airline that will get me to London, North America and Japan from Perth. It seems Cathay is a good bet - one stopover at HKG and one airline. Gee whiz, Qantas sure does know how to lose customers!

I have been in transit in DXB both with and without my family and I personally haven't worried about our safety.

Right now there are probably at least fifty AFF members feverishly working out new outrageous SC run possibilities with the hope that QF will offer SC's on all EK flights:D

I always thought we got such good treatment because they wanted our business... meaning that, if anything, it might just get better now.:D

Guess there's one way to find out, vote with your feet! That being said, if flying in discount whY you're not going to have much luck.

Not knowing anything about you ( empty profile) I can only assume you have not been to dubai.
In which case I wood suggest a visit or at least ask someone who has been there .
I have been with my wife a few times ( and she alone) and have never felt unsafe or threatened.
I find parts of Sydney far more intimidating than Dubai.
But then that's just my opinion.

It is I, Leclerc !

This was going to be my other point, also. I can see that the cheap(er) J/F fares we've been enjoying on EK will either go, or will remain, but only on EK codes (QF codes more).

I really struggle to see what EK is really getting out of this, the cons seem to outweigh the pros IMHO.

For EK, all I can hope is that the QF influx will push up load factors (on both airlines would be nice). Not sure how many EK customers will appreciate more links to the Australian domestic market, but QF were obviously hoping that would form some component of benefit (both to EK and QF - the former for connections, the latter for load factors). EK also has a truck load more connectivity options on Trans-Tasman (admittedly the quality of services offered by QF is not up to the same standard).

EK has had problems with getting more slots into Europe, where they want to attack with more flights. Being "forced" to by hopefully more traffic through QF's customer base (no matter what shape or form that takes) may give them more impetus so that they can aggressively get more flights (or more aircraft). As a last ditch effort, perhaps EK can help support QF to apply for slots into Europe that cannot be obtained by EK (the Germans in particular are not too happy giving any more traffic to EK, and LH know that well. EK has also had troubles with Canada and further traffic there, which AC has also been staving off with its lobbying.)

Hopefully they will eventually draft an agreement where each FFP's members can earn points and status irrespective of whoever markets the ticket.

That said, as alluded to by JohnK, the problems will be consistency of earn. For example, Class Bonus is currently at 50%/100% extra for J/F on QF (marketed) services only (not BA and AA); going on the same trend suggests that EK would also "miss" on this Class Bonus and use the more default 25%/50%. Status Bonus is currently only earned on QF, JQ, BA and AA services; once again, a guess may suggest that EK services would miss out on Status Bonus, unless they are "close" enough to QF in this agreement to be included in that subset of airlines.

As for Economy classes that will earn at the 1.00 rate, QF will more than likely maintain the current trend of all Economy classes earning 1.00. With EK marketed tickets it may be different. I'd like to see at least 0.50 for cheapest Economy (vs. 0.25 for BA Y), and all classes earning something (viz. would be sad if the cheapest Economy fares, e.g. sales, do not earn anything if marketed with EK). The dilemma would be not much different to QF codeshare vs. marketed on AA or BA Economy, where often the earn rate would be 0.25 - 0.50 rather than 1.00, which would only be earned on full Economy fares.

Status credit earn (except for the overarching issue of QFFers earning them on EK marketed tickets) will otherwise be consistent, though if there are ever double or bonus SC promos, these usually work on QF marketed tickets only, so naturally there is a "minor issue" there.

The war ravaged middle east? Dubai? Look it up on Wikipedia and come back to us. Hello Emirates, Hello ignorance.

Something and this tie-up are not necessarily the same thing.

Anyway for now my view is I have no interest in transiting Middle East for any trip. Just leaves few more choices to go via Asia.

And while we are on Asia how soon before Qantas starts codeshares to Asia as well without flying their own metal? It wasn't that long ago they were talking about a "premium" airline in Asia.

P.S It would appear that modern management style (not just airlines) is to try this and to try that and hope something works. Anyone can try this and try that....

Growing with Asia is one of their strategy pillars. Not sure this helps out, and I think there will be more to come on what is going to happen with Asia.
