Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

It's time to see the reality. No European carrier (other than 2 BA flights a day) flies to Sydney. That is for a reason. All airlines who tried those two leg flights made a loss and cancelled them. It is hard to fill the planes on both legs at the same time and that's why they all choose to service Australia with code shares. And if Qantas is to make a profit, they will have to adapt a similar approach. Fly to South East Asia, Middle East, West Coast of the US, South America and South Africa; and cover Europe, East Coast of the US, Russia and North Africa with code shares. While I'd much rather fly all the way to Europe on QF metal one needs to accept it's not sustainable.

PS: If Qantas doesn't negotiate lounge access for QC, there's no way I get on EK metal.

VS fly to SYD, and they are European;)

Unfortunately BA only has 1 flight per day these days:(

Does any airline meet that description? At least they are trying new routes and not cancelling aircraft orders.

Emirates? Haha.

The partnership will be announced Thursday. Emirates is not flying their A380 on from Sydney to Auckland on Thursday. Excluding weather and operation related factors, this is the first time this has occurred.

Perfect opportunity for a press announcement, QF and EK A380, side by side.

In my opinion - good bye Frankfurt, and possibly QF International out of Adelaide once EK starts up flights there. Further afield, perhaps one flight per day into LHR instead of 2.

Count PER in too, those graveyard timings to SIN must have done wonders for the loadings

PER is a huge growth market and the economic centre of gravity in Australia is shifting westward. you'd think QF would want to capitalise on that.

We may revisit that statement next year. Regardless it is good business for qantas who do better domestic business than EK!

The PER-SIN timings aren't the problem, it is the timings into PER (same for HKG), all three of these flights arrive into PER between 00:40 and 4:55.

Looking forward to Thursday's announment!

Agree, especially as Tim Clark will be in town. Bye bye red Roo (I) in FRA and PER.

QF pulling out of PER internationally is no loss in my opinion. EK serve the long haul much better and Cathay is fine to get into Asia!

Serious? Whenever we try to fly International from Adelaide, 9 times out of 10 we have to re-route through Sydney or Melbourne, even Perth. SQ flies once/twice a day out of Adelaide, MAS, soon Emirates, - Qantas do not deserve any loyalty for the pathetic International service they provide to Adelaide.

Unless you travel to Singapore like I do (a lot). SQ (hence DJ) must be laughing.

Yep this week.

Very surprised to be honest. I just don't know why QF wouldn't go after Qatar Airways more than Emirates........

This may turn out ok. I wonder what will happen trans-Tasman, QF might pick up some business there as part of the deal...

Good luck with the lounge access, the EK J lounge in Dubai is over-crowded as is, best of luck getting F Lounge as a WP. Maybe EK will get access to someone with a clue about loyalty programs as part of the deal...

Still baffles me that QF see PER intl as a burden.

They must be in the minority. Most of the talk from other airlines operating to PER is about adding flights, or increasing capacity.

SQ have 3 flights a day currently, NZ have increased size from 767 to 777, MH has put on their brand new 330, and others are talking about added more frequency.

Like I have said before, if you show the PER market some respect, you will get it back. Getting to SIN is ok'ish on the Roo (midday and 3pm services), but getting back from SIN and HKG into PER is crazy with all three flights in between 00:40 and 4:55.

I don't find the idea of long haul in EK economy all too appealing. Somehow 3-4-3 in economy for a 777 doesn't do it for me. I agree that the Roo does need to re-build internationally, but are they going about it the right way?

As a counterpoint, VA have no services of their own to SIN from PER, which you'd think is a no-brainer if QF appear to be on the ropes, especially with the rest of the PER strategy. That said, I suppose we should be expecting that to happen very soon. Either that or they're just (in a capital-lite manner) piggy backing off the SQ services - with that kind of approach, definitely gives SQ an excellent business case to put on more services!

You get 34" of legroom in Y on EK though, so I guess as long as you're not horizontally challenged then that's fine. FWIW my sister flew EK Y on her last trip to Europe, and she seemed alright with it (she is quite fit and not fat like myself).

FWIW NZ also have 10 across on their newest 77Ws, admittedly though they also made the aisles narrower and offered Skycouches. Seems like they're doing fine so far (and, for that matter, EK Y is doing fine for a long time now).

You don't always get 34" of pitch on EK.
