So, you are suggesting that someone will have their bags scanned, and, for a personal supply of drugs, let's say, a strip of codeine, - 10 tablets, and it will be detected and they will/could be apprehended?

Not even 10 tablets, do a search on Codeine Tracey who just failed a urine test !

Fair enough. I haven't actually flown with BA before. Just some reports I read say that thier FA's don't have much interest in providing service. Is this true in your opinion for the HKG-LHR vv route? I usually fly VS,MH or SQ to LHR.

I've never had a bad BA crew in J or F (I've not flown BA in Y). At worst they've been satisfactory, at best, fantastic.

Gads, thankyou for continuing this discussion! :) I have been doing some digging around. Seems like you need to get scripts notarised through our Foreign Affairs, and then send them to the UAE in Canberra, along with $60 to get them approved! OK, this puts a different perspective on the drugs issue.

Actually, I am fine with the Ramadan issue, but just getting accidentally caught out is a little worrying. Although, they are SO strict, it is surprising there aren't more arrests.

I am downloading their forbidden list. It is 7mbs, I can only wonder what is in it!

Interesting that the linked document (which is the official decree from the UAE government) doesn't actually say anything about the need to get standard-type prescriptions notarised and approved (at a cost of $60) by the UAE embassy. I wonder if what appears on the UAE's Australian website is a bit of a money-making scheme for the local branch!

I would think the vast majority of travellers to the UAE would be carrying at least one prescription drug, and I'll guarantee very few go through the process of paying the UAE Embassy to approve it!

Paroxetine a common anti-depressant is on that list.

Basically, if you are taking a drug for schizophrenia, an anti-depressant, an analgesic, an anaesthic, a muscle relaxant, something for psoriasis, an anxiolytic, an antipsychotic, a cold/flu tablet, a drug for parkinsonism, hormones, an expectorant, anti-acne, growth hormones, a drug to stop narcolepsy, hyperactivity in kids, or a drug to stop smoking, then you had better check this list.

Ok, Only these drugs need prior approval: Methylphenidate
Fentanyl
Methadone
Methylphenidate
Pentazocine
Buprenorphine
Remifentanil

These are narcotics. There is a list of basically every other drug you can think of, that do not require pre approval but no more than 3 months supply, as a tourist.

The majority of the drugs are prescription only anyway (with some notable exceptions e.g. Codeine - but then many countries won't let you buy that over the counter - e.g. the US) . But wow having to get prescriptions notarised what a pain that is!

yes, it does - that's where I found about it. I *think* you only need to have the scripts for Narcotics, as above, witnessed etc. Damn confusing and we know, as you say, there will be tears, eventually.

Thw way I read it you don't need approval, but you do need your prescription (which you may not have if bought over the counter), and that prescription needs to be notarised.

So any medication at all then.

The Chauffeur Drive service will be available to eligible Qantas customers travelling on flights between Australia and London, Dubai, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Santiago and Johannesburg.

Nice, but how many flights are >12 hours ? I can only think of possibly DXB,DFW,LAX,SCL

The media release says "The Chauffeur Drive service will be available to eligible Qantas customers travelling on flights between Australia and London, Dubai, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Santiago and Johannesburg."

No, you definitely need to get the scripts for the above medications witnessed and approved.

Oh my gosh, can you imagine Schappelles and the likes negotiating Dubai!

I can see I am going to have to take a wad of scripts with me.

eg, lomotil (travellers tummy runs); stemetil (nausea), anyone on HRT, and obviously lots of cough/cold remedies.

Best thing would be to go to the Travel Doctors for all these things.

Whilst personally I have no problems transitting throuh Dxb (and have previously), I suspect a significant number of OZ passengers have no great desire to transit or in particular stopover in Dxb for various cultural reasons:shock:. These same people will have no hesitation in stopping over in Sin between Sydney / Melbourne and London to break up the long journey......I think QF will lose these pax to SQ, TG and MH.

While people might have a preference for a stopover in Singapore because they want to see the country, I don't see what cultural issues prevent people from transiting Dubai.

We are really looking forward to seeing it.

As far as losing people to SQ etc, that has already happened in Adelaide where the direct International Qantas service is non existent.

You cannot please everyone. Maybe this change will offer an 'incentive' to fly Qantas/EK and thus also take away passengers from SQ, TG and MH

Interesting the number of people across various forums today that say they will not fly via Dubai on principle ... for a range of human rights reasons.

Anyone that has this view should take a drive through Lakemba or Bankstown or most of greater Sydney. You can add a good few boroughs of London to the list!

With a wife and daughters, Dubai is not a place I want to be hopping off the plan on my way to and from London. I think Qantas bosses have underestimated the fact that a large number of people will just not transit via the war ravaged middle east. Have previously used SIN. Also used Tokyo in the past too but QF took away PER - NRT, ruining my annual ski plans. I need an airline that will get me to London, North America and Japan from Perth. It seems Cathay is a good bet - one stopover at HKG and one airline. Gee whiz, Qantas sure does know how to lose customers!

Whether you are in transit or not does not really matter, you are still subject to the local laws, with the increased flights through Dubai, how many Aussies are going to be caught with medicine and no actual prescription for it, which is an offence and another different example?

Not correct, and there is a long list of arrests made in the Dubai Transit area for a variety of problems. Different country, different laws.

The point I was trying to make in my OP is that I think a significant no. of travellers (presumably those less travelled and exposed to the world and other cultures) will not want to transit through or stopover in DXb (for actual or preceived concerns), and I assume QF have taken this into account with their tie up with EK. I personally have transitted through Dxb but whether I want to stopover esp. in the hotter months is another discussion. I actually like the idea of the link up with EK as it opens up more possiblities for me to fly (and use QF points) to many European destinations with only 1 stop from Australia. However, I suspect a lot of the infrequent and less aware travellers may not share these thoughts and want to avoid Dxb whether for transit or a stopover. Time will tell, I guess...

yet Emirates probably fly 5000 aussies a day to or through Dubai (wild guess but its thousands), and there doesn't seem to be too many issues does there

That we hear about, and BTW its 3200 a day averaged for a 30 day month.
