Qantas First - is it worth it

Wow. Good news awilcockson.
Certainly a tasting menu is a differentiator!

Second call received, not the answer expected. Tasting Menu WILL be available on tomorrows flight (QF 127 SYD-HKG) :D
There's a positive example of both "Don't ask, don't get" and "You'll never know until you try".
Well done!
The 380 shared degustation is great fun.
Enjoy your personalised experience.

So I guess that someone like me, already exhausted when I get on the plane, F maybe a waste of time, would hate to fall asleep and miss most of the F experience, and with access to the OW F lounges already, probably better to use J!

Enjoy! You should be able to use a large part of the journey being fully occupied eating and drinking ;). It is definitely a very pleasant experience IMHO :D.

Looke forward to your feedback.

Did a file comparison.

Main difference:

Biz: Whole Seasonal Fruit
1st: Whole or Sliced Seasonal Fruit

(you pay for service) :p

I think the cheese is also hand selected by some 'head fromagier' guy in First, whereas it is only plain 'hand selected' in business :)

On the contrary! If you are exhausted it is much quicker to be able to get to sleep in F... quick access to the WCs to change into PJs, bed made while you are changing, then rapid drink service (warm milk :)) and off to sleep.

In biz class too much fussing around and noise while the carts go down the aisle for drinks then dinner, and the cabin floor flexing as pax and crew go up and down.

I did a couple of biz class flights recently (no First offered) and having to wait the extra time for the cabin to settle was not conducive to sleep. Even little things like having to wait for the crew to get to your seat to discuss your meal preferences (or not) and when you would like to be woken for breakfast. All eats into sleeping time (especially as the flights were overnight and just 5 and 7 hours respectively)

I have decided on J for the long haulers over 13 hours, I think plenty of time to get to sleep, also depends on how easily you are irritated by others, and can understand that the more restless will be bothered by trolleys and the trudging of others, the last trip QF11 they had to wake me up to get off the plane as I fell asleep yet again after landing. SWMBO and the apprentice SHMBO and myself are contemplating booking three F if possible either BA or AA from LHR to JFK, likely most of the flight we will be awake or relaxing to make the most of the F experience (and likely a day flight). Agree that on a 7 hour overnight flight, F would definitely be better, maybe pre flight dining and freshen up and breakfast at the arrivals lounge (if there is one).

But then again, I think BA try to promote the ORD-LHR (and others) J class as a type of sleeper service for the over nighters, pre flight dining (I think), sleep on the plane and then freshen up at the arrivals lounge. But then again, can you enforce a curfew on the entire J cabin? Or maybe it is just an unwritten rule that all the J's follow on these flights.

I have just flown (arriving yesterday) from SYD to LHR on QF001 (747) in First and it was really good. Only 4 pax in F from BKK to LHR so nice and quiet. Food was excellent and it was lovely and quiet too. I got some good sleep and a lady does need her beauty sleep after all.

EH

Just wondering, are there any horror stories when flying in F? children out of control, flight spoiled by obnoxious passengers or not so helpful staff

only the very few passengers who have never flown F before and don't know how to behave*. (99% of first timers are pretty good though)

*this includes people travelling with their spouse but can't afford two tickets so want to swap seats, or stay with their spouse in a spare seat to sleep (actually someone asked this on my last QF F flight), or parents with children who fly First, but their nanny or children are in biz and yet want their children to come up in to First, or first timers who just want to drink as much as they can etc

All my F flights have been good at worst. Was interesting flying through the middle east and having my F cabin go from 4 pax to full with about 20 pax. Everyone was well behaved but the whole cabin had a very different feel.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed my flight SYD-HKG in A380 F on Friday. Looking forward to my 747 F trip back boarding in about 5 minutes :)

I'm going to try my best to sample the 8 course taster menu on Monday, will have to hold back on the salt and pepper squid in the Flounge beforehand ;)

awilcockson has consumed all the Salt and pepper squid anyway.LOL

I think the squid is a AFF favourite.

Will Stud is the cheese guy I thought, company wide.

Good choice as well. Wonder if cheese tastes differently at pressure like wine?

I was thinking of putting SHMBO and the 20 month old apprentice SHMBO in F Q12 from LAX, at the moment it is the A380, just a question, are the fold down beds wide enough for the apprentice to sleep at the feet of SHMBO.

BTW SHMBO does like the red wines, which wines are normally available on these flight, and how does the altitude affect the wines, more concentrated taste? Naturally, I am assuming that FA's would cater for a children's menu in F also.

with the constantly circulating dry cabin air, the wines need to be more robust at altitude to achieve the same taste as they would on the ground.

Is it worth upgrading just the MEL-SIN leg just to do the taster menu?? I assume you have upgraded SYD-LHR??
