Qantas First - is it worth it

Is it worth upgrading just the MEL-SIN leg just to do the taster menu?? I assume you have upgraded SYD-LHR??

In my case as I'm flying to London I had to request the upgrade through to LHR. It's not possible AFAIK to upgrade individual legs.

As I am flying QF to SIN and BA to LHR, I can Submit an upgrade request for MEL-SIN for 25,000 points

Just wondering, are there any horror stories when flying in F? children out of control, flight spoiled by obnoxious passengers or not so helpful staff

"Not so helpful staff" Last June SIN - MEL started fantastic young male at door "good evening Ms Heleigh (blah blah) leave bags on floor I'll put in overhead bin" nicest staff member on flight. Young female attending Row A polite but no warmth in service, advised her that I will have missed connecting flight (MEL doing night repairs to runway) - CSM will discuss matter with me in morning which is fine - wake up ask if any info - she will look into it.

CSM first words we think you've made a mistake - show her connecting BP - then it started - who made the booking - I did - why would you allow 1 hr - politely because web page allowed it ((( and before anyone on this site says it should have been longer, I was at the end of AONE RTW and two flights to choose from 1 hr or 6 hr - I just had high hopes for 1 hr and may have made it if not for MEL repairs)) back to CSM who continues on and on about the 1 hr connection ((( in previous thread re: staff dragons never believe until this CSM ))) her attitude and tone of voice were defensive and offensive - all I need for her to say was I'm sure the ground staff have taken care of this - her response toward the end was - You'll have to see ground staff and sort it out - not a problem from me I knew QF will have sorted it and by this stage I just wanted her out of my space.

At end of conversations asks “how was your flight” in a sweet tone - almost said fine - politely told her that apart from the young male warm greeting it was the worst A380 F flight for customer service I'd been on.

For the second time in over 35 years flying (1st with Ansett in the mid '90) I was prepared to leave a flight without a word to staff - only to be stopped at doorway by CSM - now over friendly - Ms Heleigh, Ann (a name to use) has your new BP and will take you to F Lounge - on walk Ann asked what happened on flight because we don't usually escort PAX (except CL and high profile flyers).

The report to QF was pages long.

Out of interest:

1/ Where was your onward connection to?

2/ What was the response from Customer Care - if you don't mind sharing.

I'm going to try my best to sample the 8 course taster menu on Monday, will have to hold back on the salt and pepper squid in the Flounge beforehand ;)

Good idea about eating in the Flounge beforehand. Take it very easy with each course during the flight. As I could not decide what to order I thought the taster was great, except that when I reached some of the courses towards the end, especially this little rich chocolate thing (which tasted super delicious) all I could do was dip the finger to taste it. I was really full, both food and wine, but what a great experience.

1 - AKL

2 - They tried to contact me via phone a few times but I was not contactable. then sent Email stating they tried phone and apologized for the service and would look into the situation. Totally different to standard letter/email re: complaints, this reply email seemed more genuine.

Naturally, I am assuming that FA's would cater for a children's menu in F also.
It is a long time ago that my kids had children's meals in First (the youngest Ms FM is nearly 21), however we certainly ordered children's meals in the early days and there was no issue with them. Quality wasn't anything special but then at that age they don't mind. :) As soon as they were less picky we moved from children's meals, esp as we were mostly flying J by then - 5 full fare F tickets were beyond our means! One of the best things about flying in F with kids was the speed they could have a meal and go to sleep - I remember one very tiring holiday where we had flown to London from the Crimea via Turkey and had been travelling for nearly 20 hours by the time we got on the LHR-SYD flight. it was an absolute lifesaver to be able to get them a quick meal and tucked in, in no time at all.

I have come to the conclusion that I enjoy First on the A380 way too much.

It's the only reasoning I can come up with.

I just completed QF 11/12 return both in F, and I'm obviously enjoying it too much and therefore not sleeping enough.

The comfort of the seat is certainly not the problem. I think I just genuinely enjoy the cabin, the service, and the food and wine too much :)

+1 Just completed QF 31/32 F and am going to find it very difficult to head back upstairs again

Oh I can handle upstairs. It's the back of the bus that will hurt.

I did 2 bossreggie walkthroughs this flight just to remind myself to not take F for granted ;)

I'm surprised by how many people are flying F (on here I mean). I'm trying to understand the economics of it :p. Are people mostly on FASA's or on a points upgrade from J etc??

Could someone please give me advice on how to convince ones OH to allow me to use points to upgrade both of us to F on A380 to LA?? Having successfully booked J flights for free, return to HK she now loves the idea of free flights and doesn't want to "waste" (?!) points

As for economics I guess people buy boats or cars or paintings, travel is my only hobby that actually costs money so I have no issue paying for it if I can. J however not F

If she doesn't like it - you promise never to upgrade again ;)

In my case - in this instance - well planned AAwards in AAdvance :)

It is not about economics!! We fly F when we can afford to, J when we can't. I think there is a huge jump between Y and J and it is quite easy to justify that based on space, service, how much better you feel when you arrive at the other end etc etc. However F is an indulgence and I freely admit that, but it is nice to do. Traveling is our main hobby - we don't eat out much, don't smoke, drink moderately, not fashion plates and run one small car. It does leave quite a lot to spend on our hobby - particularly now the ankle biters are almost off our hands. I am quite diligent in searching out bargains - e.g. an Aone4 delivers a lot of premium flights at a very cost effective price. BA often does a fly J one way, get F the other. in 2009 at the height of the GFC we bought Ethihad F SYD - LHR return for a bit over $7,000 pp (my one foray out of the one world umbrella). People on this board are masters at obtaining even cheaper options by buying through travel agents overseas and at getting upgrades. So yes if you are going to be rational about it then the $ don't add up, but there are worse things to waste money on. :)

what's a walk-through and its purpose?

Walking upstairs, through J, PE, downstairs through whY and back into F.

Helps walk off dinner and gives the FA a few mins to make/unmake your bed.

Also has the effect of making the whY seats seem even smaller than usual ;)

Thanks. New concept to me. I'm a strictly 'stay with in your class' (in both senses of the word) kind of guy :)
