Yes, perhaps they should have ordered the A330-200s with the strengthened floors, but moving them to JQ overcomes this limitation.
Please explain - strengthened floors??

I get the impression that QF are not moving A330-220s to JQ International without some changes.

In particular StarClass - which has AVOD and inflight power - neither of these functions are available on existing QF Domestic J.

I thought the seats were the same as Dom J, but perhaps not?

Jetstar Starclass will have new seats with inflight power, same pitch and layout as the current domestic J but the AVOD will be a handheld device, it is not built into the seat...other JQ passengers will pay for the device as they currently do on domestic routes. It would be nice if QF offered these devices to J passengers on longer domestic routes like MEL-CNS/PER or international 763 and 737 routes in both Y and J, but no, QF continues to treat passengers like garbage whilst giving JQ the fancy new toys.

On a recent J flight from BNE to AKL I was offered the handheld DVD player - so it looks as though QF are introducing them (gradually!)

As have I on WLG-SYD (or maybe it was CHC-SYD?).

Jetconnect flights on the 737's have them available in J I believe. You won't see them on non-Jetconnect routes though!

That might explain why I haven't seen them yet (other than on NZ) - my trans-tasman flights are QF mainline rather than jetconnect.

Yes they do, for a while now... they are good.

I have had them on a non Jetconnect route as well but for the life of me can't remember what flight, will go back over travel diary see if it jogs my memory.... I was sure it was a 767 too.

Installation of the skybeds required strengthened floors.
That's only what they like you to think. The real reasons are:
1. QF cabin crew are generally older and heavier (and that's not just in disposition)
2. QF seats are closer together so they have more people on board

The cabin floors on the QF A330-200 aircraft are not strong enough for the installation of the QF Skybeds as used on the 747-400 and A330-300 aircraft using on long-haul international routes.

That means QF cannot operate the A330-200 on international routes with the same seating as their other premium service aircraft (with the exception of the 767-300 which has the older Dreamtime Seats). So they are limited to using the A330-200 for regional routes (Trans-Tasman is they wished, as they currently use domestic config 763 aircraft) or domestic services.

Moving them to Jetstar International allows them to use basically the same domestic "Millennium" seats with new covering (leather) and in-seat power added. This seems a good logical choice for an aircraft that is reasonably efficient at moving a good number of seats over medium-long distances.

Umm - seriously Jetstar put business class passengers in a economy seat? I appreciate that the cost of fligths will be lower but isnt the main thing the seat in business class? I couldnt imagine paying business class price and getting economy seat. What's more frightening is tha some companies will start slying people business class but in the cheap seats - ick.

The millenium seats are not economy seats though. They are the business seats used on most QF domestic services

Actually, you would be paying Premium Economy price for a Premium Economy product. Star Class is not Business Class, its a premium economy service. And as Dave points out, the Millennium Seats are the ones used on the current A330-200 and 737-800 aircraft (and some configs of other aircraft) for domestic and trans-Tasman Business Class passengers.

2 years ago Qantas had a short lived experiment with a lot more 73H's across the Tasman. I flew on one MEL-AKL and returned WLG-MEL. On these flights J PAX were supplied with the handheld DVD players.

Not so short-lived experiment. They are back on the schedule for BNE-AKL-BNE.

I was more referring to experiments with flights betwixt SYD/MEL-AKL.

Below is a list of all the routes Qantas is AXING the skybeds

* From 2 October 2006 flights between Brisbane and Hong Kong on QF97, 98 will operate on a B767-300 aircraft, which does not have Skybed.

^ From 1 September 2006 flights between Perth and Tokyo on QF79, 70 will operate primarily on a B767-300 aircraft which does not have Skydbed. I hope this is a very short lived experiment.

I have routed my SYD-SIN flights through PER and do not want to be on any type of B767 aircraft. May have to go back to the drawing board.

It does say till 7 October. This suggests that one of the 333's may be out of service, or being used elsewhere.
