I can understand the 767s but what about the 744s and 734s? I won't even mentioned another Boeing family member for the sake of everyone's sanity.

What about the 744's and 734's? The 734 replacements are the 738's, simple logical and no stuff up. The 734's lived a long life at Qantas and yes their time was up, but Qantas did a good job getting maximum value for money out of them including a reasonable refresh a few years back. So really I would call that text book balance between customer benefit and economic reality.

As for the 744's the main replacements are the 12 A380's in the Qantas fleet. World economics and demand have delayed the rest that would have seen the end of the non ER's, so again don't see a stuff up at Qantas, just adjusting to a changing environment.

As for the 777 which is what your alluding to, it has been discussed to death before, but frankly the models that Qantas would have got the best benefit out of, specifically the -300ER only became available in 2004 and the -200LR in 2006, though in the case of the latter Qantas would need so few it would be pointless.

2004 is 9 years ago, that's a loooong time now and the 300ER has been a tremendous aircraft for many long haul operators, EK and SQ obviously come to mind. As to the 200ER and the LR, QF would have had a hell of a lot more flexibility with those than the A330-300 which as a QF source (reliable enough) once commented has never really fit QF's performance parameters.
 
He said retiring the Boeing 747 aircraft was reducing the workload at the facility and it would soon replace the planes with next-generation aircraft.

Really, which next generation aircraft?

If you squint your eyes and accept the loosest possible definition of the words "replace" and "soon", and pretend that QF are not still operating B747-400ERs - I am guessing that Strambi was talking about A380s and A330s, if he is also talking about B787s then he is really really pushing the boundary of the word "soon".
 
Anyone know what happened to the 717s starting in Canberra this week? On Monday they were loaded in to do a lot of the Friday BNE runs (QF15xx numbers), now replaced by QF12xx numbered 737-800s.

I think there has been a delay in getting the aircraft certified etc, vh-yqs has yet to fly after delivery AFAIK.
 
I was in J on QF552 last Friday and was sitting next to a QF staff member. He was fairly high up, I think, and had a lot of operational knowledge, so I thought I'd share some of the snippets of info I gleaned...

VH-VYG, which was operating as QF552, that day is due to be refitted with the BSI.
A330 refits will NOT include a Y+ cabin
A330 refits should be starting soon so the first operational aircraft should beat the November 2014 date - which can only be good for QF.
I gave him feedback on the Cafe Breakfast, which he said he would raise with the head of international catering. One can only hope this has some impact.
I also told him what I thought of the EK deal and their coughpy Y seats on the 777s.

You cannot refit a 737 with BSI, its factory fresh only. There is a third party option which QF has been trialling but I don't believe it's been well received, this is probably what they were talking about.
 
The A330 announcement never said anything about Y+. not sure where you heard about it?

There was a feeling from some on AFFF that QF had held something back from the announcement, but I don't think that was founded on anything concrete. This is the reason I asked the question.
 
Thinks its only CX and VX running J/W/Y A330s and their configs take up nearly half the plane

CX - 39/28/175 = 242
VX - 33/48/185 = 266

QF is currently 30/271 = 301
although expect this would go down a bit with the new J seats
 
VH-OGV heads to the desert tomorrow. Another 763 down, would have thought she would be one of the last.
