QANTAS forges Emirate tie

Further speculation as to which Oneworld choices to Europe will remain via Asia assuming that QFi still flies there and is not replaced by JQi.

In 5 years time you may well have a choice between QF operated by Emirates, and QF operated by Jetstar :)

You know that is not a choice I will make easily if at all.

I don't mind flying Emirates (have only flown them once short haul) but have no desire in flying JQi.

I have just had an interesting conversation with a friend that works at QF & apparently the "internal talk" is that if EK are going to enter a codeshare with QF , that they will require their passengers to be put onto premium carrier (ie. QF metal) when they transfer in Australia . As a result , QF will look to return / commence services not only to OOL as announced yesterday , but also MCY , HTI & LST to name a few . It was also mentioned a few other unnamed routes were being looked at . Interesting times ahead.

Whilst this is potentially fantastic news, I guess AJ will have to re-jig their ad to:

"EK - you're the reason we fly"................. (to the Gold Coast)

I was thinking similar about the implications of resuming OOL services on QF metal and EK connections if it ever gets up. It would be interesting to note if QF try those other destinations as well (LST is kind of taken care of, via MEL, except they are on turboprops).

Certainly EK customers flying to OOL can hurt - it's either transfer in SYD to another flight (non-allied), or getting to BNE at the dead of night with no train until several hours later.

Interesting combination:

QF EK NS

(the NS being that dramatic rejigging of their marketing)

One of the big issues facing airlines like EY & EK is that although they can access capital for new planes there is a huge risk at the moment, what if it all goes pear shaped. It is fast easier to get airlines like QF & VA to fly large volumes of PAX out of countries like AU in hubs like DBZ & AUH and then for EY & EK to transport them onwards on their own metal. It frees up Middle Eastern planes for expansion without additional capital injection.

There is a benefit to EK.

If I want to go to Europe it will not be via the Middle East.

Why not? It takes the same amount of time, has excellent connections (especially DXB) and the airport is perfectly good.

Probably explains why more and more of the traditional Europe destined traffic via Asia has in the past year switched to ME transits, with China expected to take some traffic from SIN etc as well!

Europe-Southwest Pacific showed the highest year-on-year loss of traffic (24%). Meanwhile Middle East-Southwest Pacific had the third highest growth (21%). Premium traffic between Europe and Southwest Pacific in Apr-2012 continues to record the highest loss (13.5%) while Middle East-Southwest Pacific recorded strong growth (13.3%).

Interesting.

The rumour I heard was that JQ would be phased out to QF Link in key markets so that operating costs would be reduced to almost JQ levels with a 'full-service' airline operated by another operating company. I found it hard to believe, but it could make sense with an EK tie-up.

So in theory.

Cancel all flights to Singapore (let Jetstar fight with SQ and the others)
Fly from all cities to HK and then transfer onto BA or CX ==> Asia
Fly from all cities to Dubai and then transfer onto Emirates ==> Europe
Fly to LAX and DFW and then transfer onto AA (ie cancel LAX-JFK) ==> North America
Reduce the types of aircraft in the fleet and increase the number of seats.
Focus on domestic services.
..
Profit?

The thing that doesn't make sense is then for Jetstar to get 787s. Where does JQ/QF want to go with 787s that can't be reached with A330s or A320s, if long haul (one stop) international is not going to make money.

IMO the best part of the Middle East - is seeing it at 35,000 feet:!:

I think some people harbour reservations of flying to and with carriers of the Middle East. I know some state it's a human rights thing. Some say they're more concerned about travelling (particularly, say, as a Caucasian) through the region. Whatever the reasons, they could be pure conjecture. I'm just saying what I've heard.

That said, unless you're doing business there, there really isn't much going for the Middle East. Tourism is pretty much at a few tourist trappy places created by people who obviously have money to burn.

I was assuming the 787 would have a higher fuel efficiency than the A330s for long haul. JQ seems to be doing fine irrespective of what it is doing due to its low cost base.

I know that kinda implies JQ will kick cough with the 787 for long haul operations, but damn it's unfair on the rest of the QF fleet. :(

Apparently QFLink will get A319 aircraft according to an aircraft refueller in Townsville. Must be true! :D

That'd blow my mind if it was true!

Hahha well there may be a whiff of truth to that, it is well known that QF have been sniffing around for a while now for a small jet replacement/substitution/expansion strategy (depending who tells the story) for the QF Link 717 workhorses ....

A319 could fall into that bucket I guess? :)

Funnily enough they would come from the latest source of the 717s, Click, I suspect!
