Qantas Green frequent flyer tier

The quiz has gone, hasn’t it? Please don’t assume that anything that applies right now will apply at any given point in the future.
The quiz is back but I’m waiting for my next member year to see what happens.

That's good news but further evidence that Green Tier rules change with the wind.
Hence my comment about waiting until the end of ones member year to complete GT (other than first timers who need the SCs or points sooner).

I know @Mr H likes the points but I personally think the cost/effort is disproportionally out of kilter to the SCs earn potential - which are otherwise much more difficult to come by not flying (for those seeking or retaining status).

Moving forward, doing the flying offset leaf as cheaply as possible is probably the main constraint for most, so do that AFAO - something like SYD-MEL return (cash offset). Then the rest can be done anytime (it only takes 24 to 48 hrs to see the remaining leafs appear).

I can understand the logic of changes QF have made (annoying for some) but as mentioned earlier, they’re coming into line with PC/PC+ changes to the benefits becoming available at the start of the new status year for those requalifying.

I too only do this for the points, hardly a pot of gold, but alas have completed it in these early stages.

I have 4 of 5 leaves currently, seems I was automatically given the quiz leaf without asking.
Just need a flight or accom stay. Year end Dec so will wait till later in the year for a flight.
Makes sense to move it to your PC / status year end.

Correct. I do not fly QF domestically because their prices are usually several hundred dollars more than competitors for a near identical round trip in economy - and international travel is done using points. I would never achieve status, so SCs are as useful to me as a chocolate teapot, and considerably less delicious.

My strategy is to try to achieve LTG then probably seek to switch to using points or BFOD J among the airlines I am happy to use if it is not too expensive for my long haul flying.

I understand this wouldn’t suit everyone. LTG does require a lot of flying to achieve and Green Tier alone will make a small contribution towards that.

If you plan BFOD in J.... Then what's the point in attaining LTG with QF???

As a few threads on AFF have said, if you fly J, then status not of much use at all.

I’m expecting reality will probably hit and I’ll end up booking Y. Also I can’t justify booking J for domestic unless it’s part of a status run

Recently I've found virgin J is often less that economy flex on both virgin and qantas.
Certainly don't need status in that situation. that's probably changed now, and hence status becomes important

An update. Qantas confirmed that I wont receive the SCs until after my membership year ends in January 2024.

So achieved Green Tier last year, SCs credited in August 2022. That Green Tier membership extends through until January 2024. However it's a new membership year so option to complete 5 leaves was available again.

Completed all 5 leaves in June 2023 and now the reward wont be paid until after 31 January 2024 however I'll have the "benefit" of Green Tier membership until January 2025. 18 months between SCs even though the fine print says 21 days after achieving the 5 leaves.

Keep that in mind if you were budgeting the 50 SCs as I was....

It’ll mean one more domestic trip than I otherwise would have needed to do, but probably wanted to do anyway.

The SCs will still help for next membership year.

I was told this over the phone the other day as well. It doesn't sound right to me?

Just having a look at the Green Tier T&Cs. They still say you should be able to choose your reward within 21 days of completing the five activities, and if you choose the status credits, they'll be applied to your account within 3 days. Here's the full wording from the Qantas website:

++ Qantas Frequent Flyers who have achieved Green Tier status are eligible to earn their choice of one (1) of three (3) available rewards. The option to select a reward will appear in My Account 21 days after the member has achieved Green Tier. The choice of 10,000 Qantas Points or 50 Status Credits or three tonnes of Carbon offset must be made within 90 days of achieving Green Tier status. Limit of one reward per individual per Membership Year. Once the application is complete there is no change of mind on the chosen reward. If no reward is chosen within the specified timeframe the reward will be forfeited.
Qantas Points: 10,000 Qantas Points will be credited to your account within three days of your completed application for a reward.
Status Credits: 50 Status Credits will be credited to your account within three days of your completed application for a reward. Bonus Status Credits earned from this offer will not contribute towards any Loyalty Bonuses, or any Platinum or Platinum One Bonus Rewards. Status Credits are not transferable and will be governed by the Qantas Frequent Flyer terms and conditions.
Qantas to purchase additional carbon offsets or sustainable aviation fuel on your behalf: Qantas will offset three tonnes of carbon on behalf of the Qantas Frequent Flyer member if this reward is selected. Carbon offset cannot be redeemed for cash, and is non-refundable. The carbon offset will be reflected in your activity statement within one day of your completed application for this reward. This reward is only available for Australian residents only and does not consider any other country, conditions or carbon offsetting criteria

There are basically three different QF status programs:

  • Metal tiers for frequent flying
  • Points Club for points earned on the ground
  • Green Tier for completing specific tasks

I can understand why Qantas would want to align the membership years for all three programs - and clearly the process of aligning may have some unintended consequences for some individuals.

In doing this, though, there is a further potential problem: the membership year resets when a higher metal tier is accessed. This could lead to half completed Points Club cycles or Green Tier cycles being wiped out. I'm not sure how that would play out.

SC crediting confusion for GT aside, the program periods are all aligned already, and membership years for QFF don't reset with status upgrades. If you level up for QFF, then you get the higher status for the remainder of your existing membership year, plus all of the next year. The only thing I can think of that comes close to a reset like this, is where a P1 gifts status to another person, and the other person's membership year is realigned to match the P1's.

Cheers,
Matt.
