Qantas Hotels no longer supplying Tax Invoices

In the past, my emails all say "Your tax invoice is attached to this email". Do yours (which are missing the tax invoice) still say this, or has that text been removed?

a) The tax Invoice saga for me started with Qantas Travel Insurance. In September 2023 I took out an annual policy. after the email arrives showing:
A$ 710.00 (includesapplicable GST/Stamp Duty)

without a formal tax invoice I asked for the amount of GST to claim. In return I again received a copy of the key points of the policy. I called and spoke some taglog, explained the 5 requirements for a Tax Invoice and then received another email giving me the main coverages of the policy.

Basically the call centre staff have been given a limited set of options with which to satisfy the enquiry. They will happily close the call within x minutes and meet some meaningless call centre KPI, all the time having not actually understood the issue.

My policy year will end soon and I'm unlikely to renew with Qantas Insurance. I'm not dealing with that mindset if I am actually trying to make a claim.

b) As a data point my 16 June 2024 Qantas Hotels booking for an Australian hotel fully paid up front did come with a Tax Invoice showing the correct amount of GST.

That line has been removed in the confirmation emails I recently received without an invoice attached.

Probably prior to the change (deliberate or otherwise) - my 2 overseas bookings made on 24 June did not have an invoice attached.

Received this today from Qantas Hotels

We are sending this email in response to your recent request for a tax invoice for Booking reference for your stay at Next Hotel Melbourne, Curio Collection by Hilton

Qantas Holidays has recently changed its process for Australian hotels sourced by Expedia. At Expedia's request, Qantas will no longer provide tax invoices for these bookings. However, you will have still received a payment summary in the booking confirmation provided to you at the time of booking and you are still able to request a tax invoice directly from the Australian hotel during your stay.

We will be reaching out to your hotel to ensure that a tax invoice is provided upon request during your stay.

Sounds like it is time to contact the Qantas Company Secretary (chief legal officer) directly (see ASX website for name etc) via the Qantas Corporate switchboard. If asked why you want to speak to them or their area simply say, "As per ASX listing requirements I am legally entitled to be put through."

If any resistance then ask very politely for the person to spell their name for you so you can get the audit trail correct for the Australian Stock Exchange.

Has worked every time for some decades now (& is legally true btw). Even got me the cc fees back for long term parking booking I made at Sydney Airport for a long weekend visit to Tassie when Deathstar decided to turn an early morning departure to Tassie into a late afternoon and the return from a late afterenoon to a mid morning = me cancelling the trip.

Didn't someone once say three is a crowd. No need to deal with intermediary agents of whatever they call themselves.

I have never had problems dealing directly with accomodation providers. In fact I prefer the ease and simplicity of a two party transaction.
The problem is that you pay Qantas Hotels $x .

But the tax invoice from the accomodation provider only shows $y.

$y is much less than $x as it is $x less a large $commission to the booking entity.

$commission is generally significant.

It is not always black and white.

it may not be cheaper booking direct ... one might have other specific reasons to use "Qantas Hotels".
I agree, I book direct when I can but particularly with cashback the various booking sites can be quite a lot cheaper and have had limited success with pointing this out and asking for a discount!

I do think "expedia" are trying to make Qantas bookings go the same way as if you book with expedia direct, pay on arrival at the hotel, just bill the hotel for your commission.
I have been using Expedia for most Thailand bookings recently and I am not sure I have seen pay on arrival as I want to prepay upfront.

I know Booking.com do this a lot and they quote a rate in THB to pay on arrival but I don't want to wait 9 months to pay with uncertainty on exchange rates but I want to prepay knowing that everything is sorted for the trip.

Expedia has flexible rates where you pay at the property. Sometimes the rate is more or less the same as prepay.
