Qantas married segment logic

Credit where credit is due. Had a fantastic agent at QF LAX who sorted it out and managed to get me on the 1030am flight to SYD despite there being zero seats for sale. Don't know how but glad QF looked after me in this situation. Let's hope qf 94 makes it by the scheduled time.

It is possible they saw this coming and were holding seats for this exact reason. 0 seats for sale doesn't necessarily mean 100% of seats sold.

12E is blocked, and another one in economy, apart from that the flight is full.

Perhaps an issue with 12E?

was originally in Row 12 so went to look. Seemed like a staff member was in 12E (as best i could tell). Now to bend over and get shafted in the compensation/refund department.

Not uncommon to have operating staff, who depending on circumstance are entitled in their contracts to travel in business class, bumping customers - and you were likely picked since you booked on points and/or had lowest LTV. The staff member likely was a crew member who was needed to operate another segment later or elsewhere, and they can only get the necessary rest if they travel in business.

You will only be refunded the difference in points between business and premium economy awards. Tough luck :(

That sucks majorly. I wouldn’t have stepped on to the aircraft and would have found another flight home or resolution but that’s just me 🤣

Or seat broken, only staff can occupy it.

If it were a proper bumping, wouldn't expect the seat map to show blocked, it would show occupied as far as I'm aware.

Conditions for downgrade should have been advised at the gate; OP should have had to opportunity to rebook on another flight as far as I understand QF's downgrade policy.

Ah, hadn't heard of that - depends on what's broken about it perhaps?

My one time on a Virgin A330 in J a few years back (obviously), I was changed into a broken seat at last minute; they obviously gave my working seat to a paying customer while I was on a points upgrade. But they did explain when issuing my new BP that my seat was broken (wouldn't recline) and mentioned I could contact customer service for a partial points refund, which was processed with no hassle.

Does the airline roster staff to travel transpacific (as a passenger) to then immediately take duties another aircraft?.

understand QF's downgrade policy.
Hmm, an airline policy which the airline itself does not follow?

On the other hand perhaps the “magical chairs” music started after checkin and became apparent during boarding process in which case the airline can do what it likes.

It is current QF policy to selectively block pax on international award flights into Australia from booking connecting domestic flights on the same PNR.
I'm facing this on an outbound OWA - I can't tag a MEL-SYD leg onto to QF1, even in economy. I have a stopover in hand so I wonder if it is possible to book an overnight stopover in SYD and then try to change to a same day connection online (I see you can now change dates on multi-city awards online)?

You should buy some here are saying that QF is making it impossible for inbound pax to get a 2 sector award.

It seems to be a matter of they won’t.
I can relate to not being able to purchase online at the time but I've had good success calling up and getting a segment added if I can find it on EF. Annoying but not a huge deal with no change fees at the moment.

I take it back. They forcibly downgraded me to premium economy.

and on the schedule change page
“When a schedule change occurs on a booking with connecting flights that are married, the flights will be ‘divorced’ enabling you to rebook alternative flights as required. Once you have rebooked your customer, the flights will be married again”

Are outbound international flights having the same issue? SYD-LAX in J has high availability but I can't see any ADL-SYD-LAX fares.

Often this had been the case

i usually take a browse on Google flights to see if they are there and if I can click through. DID THIS THE OTHER DAY WHERE the flight pairing wasn’t on the QF website but it was available
