I have always thought the name Launceston looks a bit like Lunchtime - so that would be quite appropriate for a day trip.

If it is, could QF have chosen a place closer to Melbourne than that? I guess Mildura and Canberra are a few miles closer. A day trip to HTI from SYD seems like not bad value .... but MEL-LST?

I suppose it's more about the entz package they put on rather than the distance of the location. At those prices I could have flown interstate to see Elton John from a gold category seat in Hanging Rock and had a night in a hotel.

As others have said, these are charter flights for the mystery trip only. After all, land transport, activities and lunch out will also be included.

Also one of the pictures is Cataract Gorge, so @BNEFlyer's suggestion of MEL-LST seems on the money.

OAG can take a 737, so maybe?! Might be a good way for QF to market the area to interstate travellers and boost their sales to OAG.

These flights are only for people who don't care how much they spend for one day. Extremely expensive. Poor value for money.

You must have missed the memo about what the flights are about.. this isn’t a status run or going from A to B, there will be things included that aren’t things you can normally do.

It's interesting. My reaction was similar to Melburnian1's but I get others may see things ever so differently.

But having said that, the Sydney version sounds just a lot more appealing to me personally (just on the description alone - popping somewhere exotic for a day trip sounds like fun) than the Melbourne version, (especially if it is Launceston). The Melbourne version sounds like a day trip to the Yarra Valley/ Dandenongs, but of course everyone is different, which is why it seems to have sold out. Plus I don't like scallops, so scallop pies are no good for me .

[Aside, I can actually see (for those who have seen him) as Jimmy Rees Jason Jason Jason video .... so Melbourne sir, where shall we send them? Send them to the Yarra Valley Jason, but sir, there's no airport there, well Jason do something about it. What about Ballina sir, No Jason, there's too warm they'll all collapse from heat stroke, send them to Tasmania Jason...]

With Qantas putting out a form for a wait list, those interested can also hope for a second mystery flight gets scheduled from their departure city.

The thing is, Sydney is within flying distance of lots of nice places. Melbourne already is the nice place.

I would tend to dissage, when you look at the current current QF J pricing a day return trip on any one of the triangle routes are similar if not more expensive. If the QF 'Flight to Nowhere' the 'Final 747' the '100 Anniversary' or this 'Mystery flight' had been available from ADL I would most likely booked at least 2 (the 747 and 100 anniversary) and I do not like flying that much.

These are marketing flights and as such will have show bags/ souvenirs etc that you cannot get unless you were on the flight (or from eBay at an inflated price) and aviation enthusiasts or collectors prize such trinkets.

I find this interesting. In this first round sale Qantas has clearly not sold up to capacity (121 pax out of a possible 184) and I assume has probably left the middle seats in economy unsold. Perhaps they are gauging the response and if there is sufficient demand will sell the remaining seats later.

I think it might be a comfort factor. Therefore also more worth the price. There may well be seat rotation on the return flight, too: aisle to window.

There is no seat rotation.
I was told on the phone this morning that they were not selling middle seats.

I think the Sydney (and now Melbourne) flights are sold out already cause it won't show it for me but the flight times give an interesting guide:

Edit: I found the Sydney flight times in the timetable:
18 April 2021
QF1253 - SYD to ZZF - 8:30am to 11:00am (2hr 30mins)
QF1254 - ZZF to SYD - 5:15pm to 7:30pm (2hr 15mins)

Interesting sleuthing @henrus. The block timings for the flights give some indication, probably more so for the MEL flight, but don't forget there's also plans for flyovers of some 'attractions' along the way, that will probably extend what would be the usual sector.

MEL - LST feels about right, but so potentially could be The Grampians. Don't think a 737 could use Horsham or Warrnambool though.

BNE with daylight savings would be about right for the Hunter Valley, using NTL, with a low level trip down the NSW coast or over Newcastle.

SYD flight is after daylight savings finishes on 4 Apr, so not a consideration. I think HTI is too far for any sightseeing enroute, so GLT or ROK is more likely.
