Qantas: 'one of the worst airlines in the free world'

Seems like SFO777 touched a raw nerve as a non-Aussie to criticise Qantas! I am a fan of the airline but I do agree with many of the observations.

As for the title of 'worst airline...', I think most readers will know this is highly unlikely and see it as the poetic license it is, before going onto read what is a very informative and useful TR IMHO.

I'm pretty sure the methodology is the same. The numbers are near identical.
I was referring to the star rating. Thai still 4*
Claims processing (or apparent weight given to it) seems an extraordinary way to rate an airlines overall quality

As do I agree with some of the comments/observations but the labelling as one if the worst airlines is just ridiculous and IMO not a simple case of poetic licence. He chose those words carefully.
Silly me, I wasn’t going to comment any more :p

Perhaps someone at Qantas is listening. The SYD domestic J lounge is closed this morning for "spring cleaning". When did they notify passengers, I asked. "I think they sent an email". Nah uh.

I’ve been there when it’s been closed - usually a sign up directing passengers to the QP. Never had an email, but not sure why they would need to send one or even notify passengers; isn’t the sign enough?

Oh I love a drama queen !!!
But I have to say when it comes to the SYD J Lounge I think his assessment is correct. It’s long overdue for a renovation rescue and is frequently filthy and staff over run.
I think for 70K AS miles though I’d probably tone down the hyperbole a teeny weeny bit :p

That's why we're friends :)

I agree. Every time I use the Dom J Lounge at SYD the carpet under the tables are full of crumbs. Early morning international pax transferring to domestic is a peak time. Add in the business travellers and the lounge is pretty full. Staff should be vacuuming and not just sweeping the carpet at least twice a day.

Let’s not forget there’s a fairly limited pool of international first class when it comes to comparisons :) Is QF F one of ‘the best’ (AF, CX, JL, SQ, EK, LH) or in the ‘very good business class category’ (TG, BA). There’s not that much ‘luxe’ in the de luxe when it comes to QF F. Staff - on a good day - are what makes the product. Not the food, beverages, amenity kits, or paper-towels-in-the-tiny-bathrooms.

I think most of us agreed the lounge looked dreadful and that his opinion was spot on. However he made significant generalisations, outright errors and other observations such as the CL entry that made him look a bit of a pretentious person and those errors wouldn’t have been made by someone of his airline status who lives here.

I Disagree ... generally the review is accurate.

Those who concentrate on the hypebole are ignoring the pointed facts about what qantas is these days.

Would you classify Qantas as one of the worst airlines in the free world?

Out of First class offerings in the 'free world'? Quite possibly right down there now that only AA has F left (and that's actually not all that bad, usually really good crews).

(And for business class... droopy or arched beds and passengers allocated to what is essentially an economy class lounge. Not so good either.)

I learn more from the negative ones than the fanboi ones. I look at their issues and decide whether such things are important for me and work from there.

I’d say his concerns about the filth were accurate and also the food offerings in J domestic can be very hit, or miss when they run out of a selection. However he made gross generalisations and outright errors which very much detracted from the quality of his report and in the CL instance made him look very pretentious. It’s just as well he had photos of the floor as I might have dismissed those complaints as a result.

Not much wrong with Qantas in my eyes. They get most things right.

Qantas has huge issues with flooding the market with cheap points with high award surcharges but a dirty lounge floor at a certain point in time is nit picking.
