I can see the greyed out button now. My next flight is Thurs afternoon so I will see if I can use this facility tomorrow afternoon.

(On QF400 I still couldn't select all seat positions, eg 23 A/K and 24 A/K were unavailable but I could see on the map where the windows are, so was able to select 29A.)
So it seems that there is still some sort of seat pre-allocation before one gets the chance to checkin, but there is more choice with early online checkin.
Thanks all for bringing it to my attention!

I presume (and hope) that QF will still preallocate seats (according to their preferences) for their frequent flyers with status, before they open up the remaining seats for OLCI;)

So that two QF Golds with forward aisle preference are allocated 19C and 20C on a Sunday evening flight BNE-SYD on a 737-800.

Did you ask to be upgraded, or is this a new 'special' feature?

No request, I was just seated in 1A.

Are they seating Golds that far forward now???

I reckon I'll be in the very back row on Thursday afternoon, behind all the football hooligans with no status whatsoever, but who wanted to sit together.

Must have been lucky that evening returning from Ozfest. ;)

And after watching such a sterling performance(!?) at the Gabba, I got to fly back with the Dockers

A Qantas call centre agent just told me that OLCI is being "soft launched" to Silver frequent flyers as part of a testing period. So anyone can use it, but only Silver frequent flyers will actually be told that it exists until the official launch.

I'm silver, and I can see it Greyed out. And the request upgrade button gives an instant response - "Not available"

That's all it ever says.

LOL.

When I hold the mouse over the "Online Check In" its says it will be available 24hrs before departure. So I'll post back on Friday what it lets me do (on the PER-SYD redeye Friday midnight).

The FF status doesn't seem to govern whether the button is enabled or not. It seems to be disabled if the flight is more than 24 hours away (at least the tool tip help that appears when you hover over the button seems to indicate this). I have a flight tomorrow and the button is enabled for that flight. However a flight that I have next week shows the button as disabled because I am unable to check-in this far in advance.

Also in terms of you having Silver status - that is apparently the basis upon which Qantas has selected customers to receive a promotion about the feature in order to "soft launch" (limited, quiet roll out) for testing purposes. However your status has nothing to do with availability - the button should be available for anyone.

It worked for the flight i have today, but i cant use it for the other three flights i have this week (all are more than 24 hours away).

I am Plat

Well I am glad they are quite specific regarding when you cna use it. All my flights are NZ domestic and international so the grey button does not even appear.
I have noticed that their is an "online checkin" demo on the Manage My Bookings so you can have a look at that.
Oh does anyone think that they will introduce this for Jetstar?

Without a doubt, given that they are moving to allocated seating next month.

OK I online checked on for my QF flight last night from SYD-MEL. Went into account, followed the process and printed my boarding pass out (just like I did in the morning for the DJ flight to SYD).

Presented the BP as I was boarding the plane - the flight attendant scanning BP's commented it was his first one - and, it didn't scan. FA went to service desk, where they advised system wasn't yet operational, and they printed me a boarding pass!! Oh well, next time...

I did notice yesterday flying MEL- ADL return that the BP readers at both airports are now equipped with barcode scanners, which is obviosuly for the OLCI and printed BP's
