Qantas Points Club Discussion

The 150K deal isn't bad value.

At points hacks last valuation, that's worth $2700 (and worth a lot more if you can redeem for longhaul J).

This subscription is $3000, so pretty close in value. Guaranteed PC, or would go most of the way upgrading you from PC to PC+.

You could look at it as a QFF points subscription plan, with bonus wine.

I know it's open to discussion, but I would not use the Points Hacks valuation. I tend to value a point at about 1 cent. That's the point at which I would probably no longer "buy" points because there's a big difference between buying a point and eventually spending it.

I do not value PC at anything, really. Maybe $50 for the hotel voucher.

As for wine, I no longer drink but the most I would ever spend on a bottle would be about $30. I am sure more expensive wine is worth the price tag to many, but I simply did not value the experience of drinking a bottle of wine at more than $30, regardless of how good it was.

So using my own max values, I would be spending $3000 in order to get $1,440 of wine, $1,500 of points and $50 of hotel voucher.

You're probably wasting points if you're only getting 1c / point value. Using for classic rewards / international upgrades you'll be getting much higher, and this is even higher at the moment due to the sky high cash fares.

Although, some might say $3000 wine for $1500 is a deal in itself.

Now that flightformula is a thing, just got to look out for those cheap wine deals. Pretty crazy that its gone as low as 1.25c per point for wine (or 1.13 with PC+). That would most definitely be in the money even if they gave you coughpy wine.

Only if you would pay retail price for these fares. If not, it's false value.

There's obviously a range of values depending on how you use them.

SYD-LAX in Y is about 2.7c / point. A J fare, even if you valued as low as $3000 one way, is also 2.7c.

A valuation of 1.8c is pretty reasonable.

The price for this wine offer is similar to the 200K Avios subscription, and that doesn't come with wine.

You misunderstand. I may well get more than 1c per point when I redeem, but when I buy points I value them at 1c per point. That's because when I am buying points, I am converting money that could be spent on anything into a currency that has limited uses and will likely stay in an account for a long time while the value erodes. Plus, as @levelnine says, I would never buy revenue premium fares so much of the "value" of a redemption is false value.

I no longer have any use for wine, and even when I did, I did not value it as highly as these packages are priced.

I think there's a difference between value and price. Value is a personal thing. Price is the point where a vendor expects supply to meet demand.

Yup - I assign a notional value of 1c per point when acquiring points too. This happens to be the opportunity cost of converting Everyday Rewards points to Qantas points (i.e. 2000 EDR points is worth $10 off a shop or 1000 Qantas points). So when weighing up credit card churns, I divide the number of points on offer by 100 and then subtract any fees to work out the 'profit' from the churn.

When spending them of course, I hope to get a lot more value from them (just booked MEL-SYD-WGA return on a CR for 24K points and $160 in taxes, compared to a cash fare of $740, so 2.42c per point). I value premium cabins at about double (short haul) or triple (long haul) economy.

While the wine offer may well give you $1500 'worth' of points and the wine itself, you also need to consider whether you would have paid $1500 for the particular wine they sent you, or whether you could have derived more value/utility from buying other wine for that $1500 you paid.

Then you need to factor in the Qantas wine and hotel vouchers ($100 worth), and assign a value to the other perks (this year aside, I don't normally chase status so the other main benefit - status credits on CR flights - is of limited value; maybe $50 each for the lounge visits).

Well I included the example of SYD-LAX in Y, and if you had specific plans to fly to the US in the coming year this could be a good deal if you are points poor (as many of us are after all these seat releases). I'm not suggesting points hoarding for the sake of it.

But if you have no specific plans to fly and you don't like wine obviously this is not for you!

Well I view it as bonus wine, not $1500 worth myself. Many are/were keen supporters of the BA Avios subscription which is around the same price but gives you no wine.

Having said that I've previously found the QF wine offers high quality.

My experience with Qantas wine was that it is reasonable quality but it is significantly overpriced. If you google the same bottles they are often available for a fair discount elsewhere.
I only buy the cases with decent bonus points. I usually check the price elsewhere also but allow for the points - base FF earn, bonus, CC earn and double dip with QBR.

Final few days in points club plus.
2 years, massive spend CC/BW to get there.
Only 2 lounge visits in the 24 months.
Couple of marginal wine club vouchers - as in, the $50 off just scraped past Dan's best price.

A free delivery, $50, 10% off combo really did hit the mark last month however. That was when the Qantas price was the same as Dan's at log-in. Those were rare.

Hotel vouchers??
Just used one. Gotta be cheaper!?
Well it was.....
Hotel website was approx $5 more than the QF discounted price.

Look, I can't complain really.
Got half a million points when banks were offering 0.5% or whatever.

I'd just like to be able to spend them.............................

Hey,
Just checking in. Its been 28 days now since my new membership year and no PC+ SC rollover yet? Has anyone else been given their PC+ SCs yet? Not sure if a call is warranted.....
I have called (Monday) and emailed (today). No luck yet, will call again next week

Final few days in points club plus.
Final few days of PC myself.

I qualified PC in December 2021 - Since then I have earned a little more than 10K further "on the ground each year" over the 22 months of membership that followed. I did not, of course, requalify last year but PC continued with my QFF "year".

The SC earn on rewards over the time has been very useful for WP retention x 2.

It all starts again on Wednesday - this time it may be early January before I qualify PC for another couple of years.

Tips? I have over "$500" in woolies dollars "banked for Christmas" accumulated over the last two years. Come November I will release the points into my QFF account. 20K from flying is a given, 20K from QBR is a new thing, Accor transfers for another 5K ... Bankwest 10K - That's all in November. I may not have to buy as much wine points as expected ...
