Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

If it were me:

SYD-LHR (A350)
MEL-LHR (A350)
ADL-PER-LHR (A350)
BNE-SIN-LHR (787 to SIN then A380 to LHR; a reverse of what used to happen with JFK where the flight number was on the SYD flight but the aircraft came from BNE)

I'd be very surprised if the SYD-SIN-LHR A380 doesn't stay around. The amount of traffic between SYD-LHR is absolutely massive given it's two cities on opposite sides of the world, and the small Y class on the Sunrise flight wouldn't nearly cover it. Y class on the A380s pre-Covid was often pretty much packed out. Plus, a lot of Y class travellers will probably opt for the stop-over option (because "widest ever seat" or not, no one wants 20+ hours unbroken in a Y seat) , while F and J will likely opt for Sunrise to get an undisturbed sleep.

Probably because the SYD-SIN-LHR route remains a much better option (transit in Changi), compared to SYD-LAX-JFK. (See also Jasmine's comment above.) Therefore, the step up to a direct flight is more attractive on SYD-JFK and QF are able to charge more of a premium.
Don’t disagree although they have just launched SYD-AKL-JFK. So interesting to see how it all pans out.

Maybe QF will terminate this once SYD-JFK starts?
Alan from memory did say something to the effect of intending to keep AKL-JFK for connections from the other capitals (BNE/ADL/PER) plus compete against NZ for the AKL O&D to fill up the remainder.

Only trouble with that is ADL pax don’t have a huge amount of options direct to AKL. QR ADL-AKL and then onwards to JFK is better than going to the East coast from ADL though

Apologies as I haven't really kept up to date with these developments.

Is the A350 replacing the 787 or are these additional? The 787 wasn't great in economy but for me the SQ A350 has stooped to new lows in economy comfort.

In the past there were alternatives such as A380, 747, A330 and with a bit of planning it was possible to get to somewhere in Asia with your favourite aircraft.

The 787s will be around for a long time to come, and more new 787 aircraft are in the pipeline for QF. I assume some A330s may bow out long before the 787s.

So is the assumption the A350's will be mostly used on ultra long haul correct?

Yes, and ultimately replace the A388s (obviously not like for like - there’s extra 787s coming).

Qantas have started putting thought into what they will replace the A330s with. Or at least putting thought into asking Airbus and Boeing to put some thought into it
