Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I've never flown on A350, is it the seat width or what??
The cabin interior of A350 is slightly wider than B787 but slight less than the B777 So potentially seats are wider than the 787.

Also QF said that the legroom about 2in longer (33in rather than 31in). However I don't know if they took some of that be making the Y seat cushions thinner (and therefore harder more uncomfortable)

I flew SQ LAX-SIN on Y on the long haul A350. It was 18 hours. The seat and IFE was fine except that my bum hurts sitting it for too long. But that also applied to my subsequent flight SIN-SYD Y on A380.

I would probably complain more about the lack of 3rd meal on LAX-SIN flight. It was a snack offer instead of 3rd meal.

Are NP leaves enhanced?

Daily recommendation of Mg = 400mg

100mg lettuce maybe 15mg

Would need to eat 2.6kg of lettuce to get daily Mg🤣

Hoe many leaves does one get at FLounge. Maybe 10 leaves?. Maybe 10g?

Rocket (which is a large part of the "dish") is 46mg per 100g. Also balsamic vinegar (which is served with it) is 12mg / 100g.

In any case, every little bit counts, and probably better than the chips. Or at least as well as the chips. It's not like it's the only meal you're having for the 24 hours.

I'm not suggesting eating 2Kg of lettuce. Just add a side of salad with your meal, it won't kill you, I promise.

I know Qantas did some research for what to serve to help with jetleg. I think it was also something spicy for the first meal? I can't find the source now, I remember watching it when they did the JFK flight.

There's a bit rabbit hole to go down with Y seat widths. However, IMO I'd probably rank the seat widths of wide body economy as follows. With number 1 being the best.
  1. A380 10 abreast lower deck and 787 8 abreast
  2. 777 9 abreast and 747 10 abreast
  3. A330 8 abreast and A350 9 abreast
  4. 777 10 abreast and 787 9 abreast
You often find also that airlines fudge seat measurements when publishing on sites such as SeatGuru resulting in different aircraft types having similar widths. EG measuring seat width as distance between the inside of the arm rests, but then reducing the width of the armrest in the 787.

it's more marketing than research.

However have you considered fasting....it's one idea with merit. Why assume one must eat to mitigate Jet lag

Two serves of NP leaves seems to do the trick for me, even with copious amounts of alcohol and the cheeseburger.

Yes, possibly placebo effect, that's still fine with me. Drinking for 18 hours on an empty stomach sounds like terrible advice!

I was researching September trip and noticed SQ have put the A350 out of SYD too. Cr@p. We've scrapped September trip and planning Christmas trip and I will avoid SQ as I don't need this stress.

By the way I used to stress the same way about QF A330 when compared to 747 and A380 but QF A330 is streets ahead of SQ A350.

Isn't SQ changing one of their a359 runs to an a380? They state very well which aircraft operate which times out of Sydney. 2 x A380 per day, 1x 773 ER , 1x A359. I believe the a359 is SQ241 & SQ242.

good to knw. thanks.

Just did CX a350 whY from MEL > HKG and that was fine imo. pretty comparable to 8 abreast 787s although I found it a little bit nicer personally. Also did domestic a350 with JAL although thats a bit special as JAL is the only one running a domestic configured a359.

QF is a Low Quality Carrier for passengers
QF is a High Cost Carrier for taxpayers
QF is a Low Cost Carrier for... no one?

I've not seen what Qantas is doing with the A350 economy but I'm assuming the cabin width will be exactly the same as SQ cabin width and those seats are as awful as airline seats can get.

It's not just width that matters. The seats are narrow but already reclined and forcing people to sit back at an angle for long periods is uncomfortable. Seats have to be upright and if you want to recline then you recline a little bit but having seats with recline that then recline further is just dumb.

Forget personal space. It's non existent.

Agree, I bet seat design would improve if airline management (who never fly economy) had to spend 24 hours in one as say a Sydney to London passenger would need to.

you really rate the Y product in A350 that bad. even on SQ, just the metal.

SQ A350 in my opinion is awful.

As I said I'm big. Seat is narrow, extremely thin with very little padding and comes pre-reclined which I find uncomfortable. The last flight I was extremely tired and tried to sleep but kept sliding forward in the seat. Woke up often. Could not get comfortable and when I did wake up I wanted to sit upright but couldn't because seat in front reclined in my face.

My plan was to maintain VA Gold with family pooling a couple of trips to Thailand each year on SQ but the high airfares and this ridiculous economy seat has me doing a rethink. Will be interesting to see what Qantas does but hope they don't go for the same seats.

Not put too fine a point on it, but do you honestly think there is an economy seat that is going to be comfortable for a 20 hour flight if you're a big person?

While I hope QF chooses a comfortable fit out for Y, there's only so much they can realistically do for bigger people (tall or wide). It is long-haul Y after all.

Absolutely.

- QF 747 perfect (many times)
- QF A380 perfect (many times)
- BA 747 more than acceptable
- SQ A380 more than acceptable
- EK A380/777 more than acceptable (many times)
- CX 747/777/A330 acceptable
- QF 767, A330, SQ A330 acceptable
- QF 787 OK(ish)
- JQ 787, D7 A330 OK if no other choice
- SQ A350 about as awful as it gets

Note I'm not a new flyer. I've had well over 1,000 flights and think closing in on 2,000 flights.

Each to their own, but this is a very strange ranking.

The QF and EK A380 Y seats are practically identical to each other. And the EK A380s and 777s are quite different from each other — the A380 is a whole inch wider than the 777.

So with Project Sunrise and all the A220's associated with it, scheduled to replace the 717s (sob, love them) - what does that mean for the now 30+ E190 fleet via QFLink/Alliance?

The A220s (along with A321s) are replacing the oldest 737s as well as 717s (I dont think they will replace the F100s however). The E190s will likely be a stop gap until the full fleet of A220s arrives. Rumours are that the 717s will be retired early and replaced by the E190s, although A220s wont solve the crewing issue at NJS.
