Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I look forward to Red-E-Dealing my way back to retaining WP on the A220s. I can imagine these beauts doing Perth to places like Hue and Koh Samui during the holidays.
 
All well and good. Happy with the domestic fleet (discussed back in Dec when announced) and all.

the F suite looks so cramped though. Consider QF will be 1-1-1 in Zone A. SQ go 1-1 in the upper deck (which is a bit narrower sure) of the 380. I call these things poor man's SQ Suites tbh. While it's hard to tell from the video and impressions, space does look quite limited.. closer to an EK F suite, just a biut wider I have the impression.

and I'd really like real windows please. i guess the "D" suites can have a virtual window a la EK if they want?

I'm not so sure how good these would be on such a long flight. better than J for sure- specialy if J will be more or less the current seat - but I reckon I'd prefer SQ tbh.

Good to see he has managed to tick the last bucket list item before he exits the job :)

He managed to squeeze every last drop out of the 717/737/330 fleet while ensuring the 787s went to JQ first and thus maximising profits...


These were purchased by Geoff Dixon way back in 2005...AJ just reallocated them to JQ:


Which all started because the 767s had reached end of life, so Qantas needed the A330s back to replace them.

And at the time, there was a real prospect that Qantas would cease to be an international airline - they were losing money hand over first. Mergers with BA and MH were proposed.

Now they can't get enough 787s...

I think the original order for 65 (+50 options) was a bit excessive. Not sure if they were expecting some to be the 787-3 variant when they ordered them? I guess this was the post-Ansett honeymoon before VB had V Australia, and certainly before the 2007 economic crisis.

However, it’s not immediately clear if those long illuminated wall panels will actually be windows – through which guests can watch the ‘double sunrise’ for which Project Sunrise was named.

You'd expect there would be windows.

QF press releases are spruiking 'wellbeing zones' in the middle of the aircraft to enhance the whole non-stop experience. Images in the Guardian look a bit small to accommodate all but a small % of the 238 passengers and crew, but they are an interesting concept. They look a bit like a cross between a curtain, drink shelf and a tram bumper bar. I guess this will help prevent medical diversions due to economy class syndrome or being sued due deep vein thrombosis. Screen Shot 2022-05-02 at 17.30.18.png

The F suites look ok but I dare dare the premium price QF will attach to them will mean it’s still going to be better to stop over and get truly Premium service on a better airline. The whole non stop thing doesn’t really interest me these days anyway, I quite like the stop overs

Qantas will charge what ever the market is willing to pay.

The same people pooh-poohed the PER-LHR flight for the same reasons but yet it went gangbusters. As this will. ULH is very much a thing, even your beloved SQ is doing it.

I for one would prefer to fly SYD-JFK non-stop than have to do the annoying plane swap at LAX, since I loathe LA so would never want to actually stop-over there.

I don't mind the stop in SIN en route to LHR, but I often dont have spare time to stop over. If I was flying for business then the non-stop would allow for a longer less interrupted sleep.

Ive done the LHR-PER flight in Y and it was no worse than the DFW to SYD flight in Y, obviously better in a premium cabin but i dont really notice much difference between a 9 or 15hr flight.

Whilst retirees might have the luxury of plenty of time to do stop-overs many of us have very limited leave and prefer to maximise our time at the destination rather than dragging out the process of getting there or getting home.

Each to their own but I can see SYD-LHR and SYD-JFK being popular, especially for those who do not not wish to transit the ME.

I’m not pooh-poohing it at all and hope it succeeds because it lines my pockets when things are going well for QF. I have no doubt they will sell very well but I‘m just saying it doesn’t suit me personally. Im at the stage of my life where I’m not in a hurry to get somewhere for work and enjoy a stop over along the way but perhaps if I have a family funeral to attend urgently in the UK it might be a option. I don’t know where you got “beloved SQ” from either as I rarely fly with them

I haven’t been impressed in my last few QFi flights and it’s opened my eyes to what else is out there. Perhaps Sunrise might herald a new era of premium service on QF hopefully and I may get around to trying them out
