Qantas Revenue booking cancellations (under covid19)

Dear AFF'ers,

In a dilemma - could use some help in deciding :

I've got a trip coming up in April, which I obviously won't be undertaking and now the QF has given the option to cancel & refund or cancel & credit and the (un)expected status extension - I'd like some advice

The trip is to India, flex Y, DSC booking. Currently WP (ann.date. 31 Dec 2020) and with the generous extension offer, will be so until Dec 2021

Now, do I cancel & refund or cancel & voucher ?

With Cancel & refund - I get the money back and given that I will be WP till Dec 2021 with zero flying - I'm leaning more towards this options. Besides, I'm not sure when will this Coronavirus thingy be sorted and flying gets back to normal. And cancelling a flex Y means I get back A$2500 back to pocket :)

With Cancel & credit - I get to retain the $ value as a credit and try to retain the same PNR as DSC, so when I plan a trip in the future (but before 14/02/2021) I will get DSC, which might not make any difference as I will be WP anyways till Dec 2021

So what do I do ?

All my trips are personal, paid out of pocket by self and for personal/family purposes - meaning it's not strict in terms of time - can move things around.

I've also got a trip in June and August - all to India - which are not, at least for now, under the radar for QF to act on - will need to look into these in about a month's time. For now the focus is on the April tickets

Thoughts?

I made the decision to cancel, wear the refund penalty, and get the cash. I can claim that on Travel Insurance though.

Re : refund penalty - my understanding is there is no cancel/refund penalty on a Flex booking?
Ok, sorry, I give up understanding all the rules. We had to pay a refund fee. So in reality the only thing you are asking is about losing the DSC with a cancelled booking?
Post automatically merged:

Surely as they are about to cancel all flights there should be no refund penalty anyway?
Only if you convert to a voucher.....so far anyway.

Ok I'm so confused and don't know what to do. I have flights booked mid may to Canada return end of June. My return flight has been changed by Qantas from Vancouver - Sydney TO Los Angeles to Sydney and no connecting flight from Vancouver to LA. I booked using points and also paid $800. My receipt states only a monetary amount no mention of points. If I choose a credit voucher do I get the monetary value in credit or the points value? And do I have to use that voucher for a classic reward flight or can I use it on any flight. BUT If I cancel will I get the points and the $800 refunded? I can see there is lots of confusion about the 6000 points cancellation fee also. Any advise would be appreciated.

I'm honestly tempted to do a credit card chargeback. I'm still in my window for my flights on 4 April that have been cancelled. I can see why they don't want to refund, they'd lose a lot of capital reserves. But chargebacks are perfectly legitimate for not delivering the purchased product, and will come with dishonour fees against Qantas.

Unfortunately I don't know what state the airline will be in come the next chance I get to fly.

Did you manage to get a refund online or have to call . Please advise how you achieved the refund

worried if I request refund via manage booking I’ll be up for $800 x 2 as per T&C’s

now at level 4 no travel wanting the full refund

cheers

I called, my problem was that I booked JUN19 , so a voucher would only be good till JUN20. So stood to lose on 2 return J class fares (destination withheld to maintain anonymity).
However the ticket had been reissued in December 19 due to a schedule change(timing).
It was on this basis that the fare was refunded .... ie on the basis that the time change was unacceptable.
But I would think that in present situation especially if your flight is canceled and they are not operating , they have to refund you

this response from qantas buried in Facebbok comments - FFS how hard is it to pin this at the top of the page:
We know there have been lots of questions on travel credits, so let us clear up some of the common queries:

Q. When do I need to book my new flight?
A. You need to re-book using your flight credit before its expiry date, which will be 30 September or later, depending on when your original booking was made.

Q. For what travel dates can I book my new flight?
A. You can book your new flight for any date that is available when you redeem your flight credit. Flights are available up to 355 days in advance.

Q. Who is eligible for a travel credit?
A. Customers who book directly with Qantas, and have a booking for travel before 31 May 2020. If you have booked with a Travel Agent or third-party website (Eg. Webjet, Expedia) you will need to contact them directly.

Q When do I need to cancel my flight to receive a flight credit and a waiver of the change fee?
A. By 31 March 2020.

I wouldn’t do anything until Qantas announce further plans RE: credit vouchers with ”change fee” waiver for bookings made after 01/6/2020.

Their current offer is only valid for booked flights up until 31/5/2020

Wait and watch this space. We have 2 overseas trips booked in June and August this year. Will wait for further announcements on those dates of travel.

Have you confirmed coverage for self cancellation with your travel insurance?

Does your insurance cover cancellation of flights by yourself vs the airline due to a pandemic?

I know travel health insurance doesn’t cover you for pandemic.

Once the level hit 4 then that invokes cancellation coverage. Qantas have cancelled all international flights. Indonesia wont let us in. Our TI covers epidemics.

So has anyone got their "voucher" issued? I cancelled our April SYD-BKK-SYD into a credit voucher on Monday early afternoon and still no voucher, no email confirmation and the flights are still present in my QFF.

Anyone else?

How would a trip booked entirely with QFF points work (Oneworld Award flights)? Assuming I would get a full refund of the points?

I haven’t received anything yet either, but the flights disappeared from my future bookings immediately. I am loathe to cancel a May reward booking online now. I’ll wait until next week to ring.

Qantas clarified this a couple of days ago.

Any voucher generated with this is good until end of September 2020 or later.

So your Jun19 booking would have generated a voucher good until September 2020 - from there any booking until August 2021.

I have two people, J class ( sale ) booking to UK leaving may 2020.

I want to cancel rather than get a voucher.

I think its either $600 or $800 per person cancellation fees

Also, if I paid the cancellation fees, would this be claimable through travel insurance?

Will this fee be enforced if Qantas hasn't got any flights going at that time?

Do I cancel now, or just wait and see if there is any new announcements re refunds?

Pippi

If Qantas cancels the flight you can claim a refund. That's a basic requirement under Australian consumer law. Qantas is conveniently not talking about that. Qantas' own refund policy also allows for it!

Same. I cancelled 2 x bookings Monday for vouchers but haven't received email confirmation. Both bookings remain in MMB in their original form although they return a generic error "unable to find this confirmation number." I look forward to dealing with this - not! - when it's time to redeem the vouchers.
