Qantas slashing jobs and possibly selling FF program?

As a QF employee, I have to say the latest marketing campaign is pointless..........and a waste of money. Again, everyone else is told to cut costs but marketing can spend millions on campaigns that do nothing.

The same is said by operational staff in companies the world over. Without this marketing however, you probably would't have a job.

Timely article by Paul Sheehan:

Buck has to stop on saving icons

It would be most unwide for Messrs Abbott and Hockey to give QF, Holden, Toyota or VA a government guarantee. Demands from other sectors would then commence: steelmakers (BlueScope, OneSteel) is one other industry that would immediately seek the same. It would never end.

I had an open mind until fairly recently, but the growing consensus seems that it's time for Mr Joyce (and perhaps Mr Clifford, and other Qantas Board members) to resign. QF made a huge mistake in promoting routes via the Middle East instead of Asia. SIN and HKG are way ahead of the Middle Eastern airports DXB, DOH and AUH, and culturally far similar to Australia.

While SIN and HKG may be good airports (and better stopovers) I can't fault DXB airport, and given QF's inability to do a deal out of HKG with CX, setup its own fulls service carrier in SIN, or deal with MH in KUL, the tie-up with EK does provide much better routes into Europe and indeed Africa. Remember that codeshare agreements take two to tango.

I agree giving a government guarantee is dangerous as a precedent - but we did give it to the banks, and I personally think QF is in the same TBTF category.
When Ansett collapsed it was bad enough, but QF collapsing would seriously damage the rest of the economy.

That said I think there are things the government could do even the playing field for Qantas
- depreciation rates on its international fleet - same as competitors
- hard look at the international competitiveness of our airport landing charges, security charges etc with consideration of subsidising, nationalising
- assistance with removing some of the more archaic work practices that don't exist at domestic/ international competitors

Personally I don't think changing the QSA will help Qantas raise capital - our markets are big enough to support them if needed - just with the current share price I wouldn't want to be raising anything

We are testing the A330 J product today and coming over was really good. I had the lamb!

would it be possible now with the breakup in company structures for them to put QFi into administration effectively? maybe that's the next threat that's going to come down - not as heavy as 16,000 job losses but hefty nonetheless...all of a sudden JQi would grow very quickly...

Why on earth would you fly QF to SIN, HKK or BKK then not be able to conect onto a QF flight number, code share or not, when you could choose a multitude of airlines that offer a completely truely seemless travel experience and earn and burn points at good rates?

BA refused to continue the codeshares ex BKK, SIN and HK. You may recall that originally, when the EK tie-up was announced, QF announced that the BA codeshares would continue. Then BA pulled the rug.

I agree that there are worse ones however my point was more refering to the cost cutting and lowering of standards especially in the premium cabins :D

Was there any cost cutting with the J amenity packs though? Same products, different packaging.
I have both current and previous J packs and could argue that there is a slight improvement on the usefulness of the newer Kate/Jack Spade packs..

Don't know about the new F ones but I have a previous Payot mens one and from what I can tell about the photos of the SK-II ones there doesn't seem to be a lowering of standards by any means.
International First Class | Qantas

There are some airlines that don't even offer PJs in long haul J...

May be a coincidence, but last week I ordered a couple of items from the Qantas shop using my points, and within 2 days they were no longer available. People may be cashing in their points, or it could be xmas season. I wonder LOL

This article puts a number on the marketing spend New Qantas uniforms mean it's the crew who will be taking off

"The change comes at a time of turmoil for Qantas, which plans to cut at least 1000 jobs over the next year and warns it will lose $300 million in the first half of the financial year. Despite this, it is combining advertisements and social media as part of a $72 million, three-year global marketing push."

On another note - poll result on the new uniform doesn't look good... NO = 73%

Be sure to read the comments....some classics!
Well that should scare away the few remaining passengers.

Put AJ in the hot pink for a day..

Hmm, I think those uniforms looked fabulous when they were first released, but now in the midst of summer, they look hot - and not in a good way. And I think they do hug the figure a little too much. Especially in the rear.

Should expand use of AY and try codesharing with MH - starting with services into India.
