Qantas - Sorry But I Am Over You

I'm too pragmatic to be offended by an appellation, especially from a checkin agent doing nothing more than handing me a boarding pass or a hostie handing me a drink. It appears getting offended and telling the world about it is the new black.

I am in control of my emotions. Any man that takes offense at being labelled "him" clearly is not. Though I was taught that it was rude to refer to a woman as "she" whilst in her presence unless of course she was the cat's mother.

Allowing this is not an example of inclusiveness, enlightened companies do discourage workers speaking in their own languages where the language of business is recognised as English, especially if the conversation is work related.
Which is why I laugh when management uses the words "Inclusive culture".

Hollow words that mean very little.

There are many reasons to stop using a business, for me this isn't one of them. Funding a dictator, poor treatment of staff etc etc is more my reason for not flying a certain airline. (Safety of course goes without saying)

That's code for, 'you work here,' a copied statement from other companies, who have hopefully moved on from those platitudes.

Yes there is. Here on AFF and anywhere else you care to look. @Isochronous above mentions removing "mother" and "father" from birth certificates. Why? So a few people don't feel offended?

You mention inclusiveness in the workplace is a good thing and makes people feel better. I'll tell you that it is not.

I'll give you one example. A number of people come near my desk at work and start speaking Cantonese or Tagalog or Hindi. But I feel like I am excluded as I cannot participate in the conversation. If I complain I am labelled a racist. So much for inclusiveness.

No. Removing mother and father from the birth certificate doesn’t dictate how you speak to your family and friends at home, work, at the golf club or anywhere else. It is an administrative issue so everyone, equally, can record births. Not just straight men and women.

You have an odd workplace, i’m not sure it’s a relevant example :/

There is a push for people to think differently... examples are that family violence is not ok. Words and actions which are disrespectful to women, or inhibit the equality of women are not ok. Other forms of abuse, including emotional abuse, are not ok. Racism is not ok. Discrimination is not ok. These are all good things.

But there is no push, anywhere, asking people to stop using the terms 'mum' or 'dad' or 'husband' and 'wife' in their personal relationships or family or social settings.

There kinda is, in Canada. They are legislating personal pronouns and it’s causing a stir.

Biological units.....
“The Biological Unit, also called the Biological Assembly, is the quaternary structure that is believed to be the functional form of a macromolecule. Often it is not the structure contained in the published PDB file, which is called the asymmetric unit.”

Yes, but that discriminates against non parents. I suppose biological unit does the same for robots, but hey...

It's something from a movie, or TV show. can't remember which one.

While this thread is about QF bashing I did a day trip BNE-SYD-BNE yesterday for the first time in a while and could not have been more pleased with QF. Perhaps I should have posted a new thread but this seemed an appropriate forum.

Booked discount economy and got upgrades both ways with smiling help from staff in BNE lounge. New priority entry and new lounges at BNE are excellent. Nice bacon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, very fast wifi 85/135, nice atmosphere and plenty of space. Nice new 737s on trip with wifi, nice J seats, seat-back videos. Excellent lounge staff and FAs. Flights on time. Croque madame, soup, or nut salad going down and chicken parma and nice WA cabernet on way back.

Uber via QF app to/from airports earning QF points. Uber has now been sorted very well with dedicated drop off and special pickup areas at both airports. Did lunch at Neil Perry’s Rosetta at top of the Rocks – nice lunch – AND they give 5 QFF points per $ spent.

Overall a nice day! Well done QF.

It’s rather like Test Cricketers. They are about to be dropped then in the nick of time they make a century.

BUT...it takes more than a century to win a game and more than one game to win the series and more than one series to be get to Number One on the world rankings, however i guess even QF have to start somewhere..

I agree with the OP on this matter. It's not just QF but many companies makes comments on social matters. The recent marriage debate is a classic example. How dare these companies try and tell me there opinion on whether same sex couples have the right to marriage. I am an adult and don't need your opinion to try and change my mind. I am sure most of these high profile companies came on board for the 'Yes' vote to benefit their share price. I am not sure but how many companies advertised (directly or indirectly) for the 'No' vote.

I worked for a company that didn't allow us to sponsor or donate to charities as they felt that it is a shareholders decision to donate to charities not a company decision. My 2 cents worth....

This thread is offensive and needs to be shut down. I can't believe it has been allowed to go this far. This a forum for discussing airlines and travel. It is not a forum for allowing homophobic people to air their views.

What I don't understand is why we get so up in arms about companies taking social positions. At least they are transparent about. If you don't like their opinions don't patronise them. Simple.

On the other hand their are companies like News Corporation, Fairfax etc that push their views in far more subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) ways and that's OK? The companies who own media organisations and let's not forget social media organisations have all sorts of overt and covert power to shape your opinion. Companies like Qantas are can try their best, but I'd suggest their influence is relatively insignificant in comparison.

Compared to a lot of what appears on the internet it is relatively civil. Shutting down debate only strengthens the resolve of those who are offensive as they feel their views are being marginalised.

You have a point but I still don't think it's relevant to this forum and I'd like to be able to just read about airline and travel stuff without having to scroll past people's (defence of their) bigotry on the way.
