Qantas - Sorry But I Am Over You

Compared to a lot of what appears on the internet it is relatively civil. Shutting down debate only strengthens the resolve of those who are offensive as they feel their views are being marginalised.

Have I missed something here?

You have a point but I still don't think it's relevant to this forum and I'd like to be able to just read about airline and travel stuff without having to scroll past people's (defence of their) bigotry on the way.

Let’s get this straight , this forum, has long before I joined it, and will long after I leave, discuss topics which are many and varied. From what car you drive to the result of local elections, what you had for lunch and your joke of the day. The unifying factor in all of this is Frequent Flying, but it’s not the only factor.
More importantly, there is a strong social aspect to the AFF community, the strong hard core members are a strange lot, they think nothing of getting together for lunch in Auckland and have members fly in from all over, a lounge crawl in Hong Kong. Or planning a trip which takes five flights instead of one ! However from ALL of of those I have met and become friend with, i am yet to find any who are homophobic! That isn’t to say there aren’t people here who are without a prejudice of some kind.
If you have a very specific beef , then make a complaint, rather than elect yourself as the final arbiter. PS. Maybe turn up to a few social events if you haven’t already. You may be very surprised at the broad diversity of the group.

This thread is offensive and needs to be shut down. I can't believe it has been allowed to go this far. This a forum for discussing airlines and travel. It is not a forum for allowing homophobic people to air their views.

Are you making an assumption on the 'homophobic' accusation or do you have in fact have evidence of such.................. I lean towards doubting it.
We live in a country of free speech in case you have forgotten that. Oh and I voted Yes...............

It came across as an indirect comment by the OP against SSM as evidenced by the phrase 'how dare they [try to] change my mind'.

I'm with this view! What I'm struggling with is the view of some here that they should have a right to express an opinion but CEOs/companies don't. That others expressing an opinion somehow impinges on their rights but are unable/unwilling to have any restrictions on their own right to express opinions. Aside from being somewhat intellectually challenged that's just hypocritical in my view. The right to express an opinion is one we either all should have or none should have, I'm for the first.

I must have missed that comment. However I don’t necessarily see how being anti SSM makes one homophobic. One of my oldest friends from my school days, is in a Same sex relationship , he voted no to SSM. Does that make him homophobic?
I do worry that free speech is becoming what the militant left says it should be.

Then don’t click on this thread. I think the discussion has been informative. And there is always free speech. Just as the CE of Qantas and the OP has demonstrated.

I think the militant right is far more interested in censorship. But as I've posted previously extremists on both sides want to control our lives and thoughts.

I do love the irony of these comments on militant this and that who try to impose whatevers on us.

Perhaps he has his own issues to deal with. Who knows what goes on in the subconscious of some people's minds.

We don't have free speech in Australia - except when it comes to political issues (covered by the Constitution). Otherwise we have a whole raft of legislative, social and moral standards which try to stop those who are discriminatory, intolerant, offensive or otherwise hurtful. The sad thing is that we have to have all of those in place to protect the vulnerable. We shouldn't need it. If every white heterosexual alpha male was peace loving and embraced equality there'd be little need for it.

So it's only the white heterosexual alpha males who have to embrace it?

The comment was carefully phrased. It does not exclude other classes. Nor does it say every white heterosexual alpha male doesn't (already) embrace equality.

But that class by itself, if every one of them did it, would be set the example.

How about we stick to only scientific data?
Birth certificates with:
Biological antecedent #1
Biological antecedent #2
Verified by DNA analysis? Yes / No

I wonder what South Africa would do with the admission of humans under the age of 18?

Back to my travel wandering....

Fred
Well this does not work for adopted kids, does it ;)

Well it came across exactly as JB747 implied.

This issue of “equality “ is an interesting one. What does one mean by equality?

Well it came across exactly as JB747 implied.

It could. You could approach the principle defensively. You could approach the principle as representing a significant starting point with the ability to have a much wider influence. Or perhaps somewhere in between those.

Censorship comes in many forms. What do you mean specifically?

If you have a problem with this or any thread please use the report button and explain the issues as you see them. This sends the alert to the whole moderation team for review.

As I see it this thread started about flying (or not flying) with Qantas and how Qantas management is now putting their social agenda ideas out there to the world. I cannot see anywhere that there are homophobic views being presented but in any case everyone is entitled to an opinion. Whether you or anyone else agrees is entirely up to the individual. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.
