QANTAS takes A380s out of circulation [and reduces flights]

… The points component of an award booking will always be the lowest possible price - either the through fare if using airlines all on the one table, or the sector-by-sector fare is using airlines across different tables OR where mixed class is involved.

In many cases, where mixed classes are involved, it will usually be cheaper for the through fare to be applied ...

...but that's not always the case. SYD-DFW in F = 189800 points. If QF re-routes you via LAX, so you're SYD-LAX in F connecting to LAX-DFW in economy, the sector fares would be 162800+18000 = 180800, so you'd be entitled to a refund of 9000 points.
Take my 280,000 points award. The points cost for all individual flights, added together, would be well over 400,000 points. Even if I had one or two Y segments.

I won't be getting (or expecting) any 'discount/refund' due to Y flights.

Regarding mixed class bookings:

14.4.3 Where mixed-class travel is booked on a Trip, the Qantas Points required for that Trip will be calculated using the lowest quoted Qantas Points level of either:

(a) the Qantas Points level for the highest class of travel flown on that Trip; or
(b) the sum of Qantas Points, breaking the Trip into multiple Trips wherever the class of travel changes between sectors within a Trip.

So, I'll be keeping my 280,000 points award, as is, with over 400,000 points value. :)

We currently have a BNE-SFO J award flight booked for August. Assuming we still go, I presume that will become a BNE-SYD-SFO instead. I had been looking forward to our first B787 flight, but will now be looking forward to perhaps our last B747 flight - forward cabin or upper deck...

I presume we will not be charged the additional points for going via SYD (when they get around to rebooking us, or I give QFF a call once the dust settles).

You'd hope they were leaving the refurbished A380 flying i, ... wouldn't you? What's the 'sign' that you're on a refurbed version?
I noticed yesterday that the A380 seat map for QF11 SYD/LAX on 23 Apr has been replaced with a refurbed A380 - am not unhappy about that! The layout of the J seats give it away.

Fortunately the changes don’t affect my current DONE4, with my last flights on April 17/18 LHR-SIN-PER.

There may even be a increased chance of an upgrade to F, or at worst a refurbed A380.

Every cloud etc. Unless COVID-19 intervenes.

Will be keeping an eye on this thread as I also have F award bookings on 7/8 in the upcoming months.

It is but they had already announced it was changing to a 787. Though with the 787’s now needed elsewhere the 330 would seem to be what is left.
Yeah, I had no idea about the earlier announcement about downgauging to a 787 as in the earlier post.
Got MEL-SIN and MEL-LAX mixed up about aircraft requirements too 😂

I dunno how involved a person actually is in these situations, and how much is automated. Given the huge number of reported miss-connects in these types of situations... connecting flights leaving before the rescheduled flight has arrived, or 26 hour layovers where a two hour layover is all that is needed... I wonder if there is some sort of automatic process. Schedule changes in the US are common with timetable changes a couple of times each year, and i doubt there's any way for human intervention given the speed at which new itineraries are presented.
Many flights will just be an aircraft change, which they already have prorammed in as a regular function.

I'm actually pleased with the changes for my upcoming SYD - SCL- SYD with it going back to a 747.

I gather you are flying Y/Y+.

I’m booked in J mid August and relived I’ll still be on the 787. Not a fan of 747 J.

I wonder if all of this will spell the end of EK's A380 fleet? A few yeas ago EK was bragging that it was so amazing because it was going to have the world's biggest bestest largest best biggest large best fleet..... and I recall at that time someone with a memory and a brain wrote a piece comparing EK's chest-beating with JL circa mid-90s.... I think at the time JL operated the world's largest 747 fleet (they even used 747 on domestic routes which no one else did apparently)... but jump forward a decade or so and JL no longer had a single 747 in the fleet. I think they discovered that having a fleet of mega aircraft didn't come in handy when one needed to downsize....

Depending upon how deep their pockets really are, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them attempting to kill off some of their opposition, by, basically, being the only show in town.

Having a single aircraft type is a good strategy, as long as you have the correct type. On the other hand, it exposes you to single type groundings (as per the 737 Max, and 787). On a different note, it’s going to be very interesting to see what happens with the NG now, as the FAA have knocked back Boeing assertions re the Max wiring, and it’s apparently identical to the NG!

Looks like EK are just re-routing some of the A380s onto other routes, seen some drop award availability and others gain a bunch of new flights. Have myself double booked now cause I cant decide whether I want a bit of an airport wait or flying on the now available A380 over a 777.

I dont see EK pulling their A380s, not just yet. If they can keep any Corona based lockdowns out of the way they may be well placed to pick up customers that need to get around without going via asia at the moment. It may keep them going until this all blows over.

I booked the flight during the DSC offer recently. The offer only applies to QF metal so a QF code on EK won't count for the DSCs.

I have a similar query. I have a J class MEL-SIN-LHR-CDG return (QF37 onto QF1 and then QF2 onto QF38) in May which I booked during the DSC promotion. Pre the DSC offer my plan was to book EK (QF codeshare) MEL-DXB-CDG for obvious reasons. If they offer to move me to the EK flights instead can I claim not only ORC but the DSC too??

I know I could ask to move to MEL-PER-LHR-CDG and thus still be eligible for the DSC offer. Assuming I still need to go i'd prefer to go as directly as possible now. Was prepared to route through LHR to 1. chance at an F upgrade to LHR on the 380 2. Try the new F Lounge in SIN and 3. obvsiouly fast track WP requal. But this all seems a little first world now.

Thanks in advance

But the cracks had already begun to show in EK's A380 dream? All those trans-Tasman flights they canned a couple of years ago... and this was pre-Corona hysteria.
