Qantas to allow free changes, cancellations to Classic Flight Reward bookings to 30 September 2022

Had my Classic Reward Flights cancelled by Cathay Pacific. Disappeared from my My Booking page, but still retrievable via Manage My Booking. Only gives me option of cancelling, but says 6000PT per passenger fee to cancel - even though already cancelled (?). Do I click to speed things up and get my points and fees back (about 600 Euros), or do I wait for Qantas to process in due course? (Don't want to risk Qantas taking 12000 Points for their cancellation)

There won't be any fees for the cancellation. Even outside covid times, if the airline cancels the flight the fees don't apply.

If you have the patience it wouldn't hurt to call Qantas to make sure they are aware of the cancellation and start to process it.

...
Qantas told me that they have identified a "temporary issue" affecting some multi-passenger award bookings which has now been fixed. ...
Temporary issue!??!

It has been a known issue for several years ... at least ...

My last few cancellations have actually posted quite quickly.

The points from a flight cancelled on Friday (online 2 hours before departure), have returned to my account this morning with an email notifying me.

Sorry to revive old thread, but is Qantas still allowing penalty-free award cancellations on day of departure? Have upcoming ex-MEL flight and never certain of border restrictions until day of departure. From my reading, VA and QF cash fares are fee-free changes only until the day before departure: If you want to change your dates, simply do so before your scheduled date of departure and we'll waive the change fee and VA's policy for award tickets is unclear (especially as Velocity cancellations need to be done by phone). Would appreciate the extra little flexibility of free same day changes.

Yes, cancelled a Classic Award a week or so ago for a full refund .... however, I should note that my experience with quick refunds, which you quote above, has diminished significantly.

Not my experience. Phone staff have told me it does need to happen before day of departure - unless you’re feeling sick.

Classic Awards can be cancelled up until departure, this policy merely waives the cancellation fee, so unless there has been a change in the Classic Award T&Cs ... if an agents says no, HUACA or cancel online (which is what I did - computer didn't argue).

Two months ago I cancelled a Qantas Classic award just 2 hours before the flight using the 'phone application. Points were back in account (with no 6K cancellation fee) in a couple of days; it took three weeks for the +++ to be returned.

I’ve sadly just cancelled my revenue flights for our trip to WA and the NT and now need to cancel my partners classic award flights. Flights booked Nov 20. Totally confused. No mention of it being award when I select cancel/credit voucher for either of his bookings. For the BNE-BME red-e deal flight it says credit value of $267.98. Fees and charges were $96.98. When I try the same on the DRW-BNE flight no value is provided (original charges of $55.35). From the QF website it should just be refund of points and charges so I’m confused with what I’m seeing. All advice appreciated.

No serfty. Did the e-ticket show that. Classic reward Y x 2 if that has a specific fare class
If you hadn't yet cancelled the bookings the fare bucket shows in the detailed segment view of manage your booking.

e.g. An award business class would show (U), a points plus pay may show a revenue fare bucket such as (I).

Example of (X) class:

That’s exactly what both flights are serfty and AIRwin, Economy (X)

This is for the Brisbane Broome flight(s) on single PNR Economy (X). I don’t want to progress if I’m not going to get the points and charges back. Time for a call I suppose

When cancelling classic rewards fights the taxes are always refunded to the the original form of payment there has never been an option (pre covid) for the taxes to be converted to a credit. At present the taxes refund can be hit and miss, last weekend I cancelled x8 classic rewards for Mrs and Miss within a few days the taxes for 3 of the bookings had been refunded the rest may take up to 6 weeks. All your points will be returned and you will not be charged the 6000 point cancellation fee if do so before 28 Feb 22. The QF classic reward cancellation popup is not the best and confusing, they seem to have butchered the pre covid message which from memory detailed the points required to change or cancel a booking. I am confident it all just works.

It generally does, but with the screenshot posted by @bpeteb something is not right - it certainly does not match what I have seen when cancelling a couple of award bookings on recent months.
