Qantas to fly to Delhi from Sydney & Melbourne

Looks like the SYD-DEL flights (QF67) are now scheduled to stop in Adelaide instead of Darwin.

I don’t understand why they wouldnt use DRW for SYD - where’s ADL makes enough sense from MEL I guess.

DRW is said to be very multicultural, maybe more so peoples from Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia so maybe there is not so much of a demand for flights.
I see ADL has a lot of India Indians, (think the term is OCI), or overseas citizenship of India, and once borders open, it would be the place a lot of Indians would want to go back for a visit to see family.
I know of an Indian lady, who has not seen her family for a long time, no, no relation, she usually goes through KUL she said, that is what she did the last time, that was with MAS, but MAS has rare flights in and out of ADL, so maybe she will use this flight to go from ADL -> DEL.

For how long who knows.
When I was speaking to someone from the state government yesterday they said that MEL-DEL is scheduled to run all year with the ADL stop planned “indefinitely”
The SYD-DEL service has been earmarked as a seasonal service only for possibly as little as 3-4 months per year.

Are you sure syd-del won’t be all year round to, why would they only choose Mel-del only when Sydney was chosen first?

Things could always change depending on what flight loads look like I guess but that was the information relayed to me

I wonder what the international transit arrangements will be for the ADL stopover - from what I can seen online it seems to be a very small international section of the airport, and I'm not sure if they ever did international-to-international transits there previously (prior to covid/March 2020)?

The ADL int terminal dep zone has been redeveloped in the past few months, now very modern.
First go to check in, as with dom pax.
Go through dom security.
Go to QP/J lounge if you want.
Go downstairs to outgoing immi and int security screening.
Then go upstairs to the closed off area, which is really just the dom zone, but closed off.
Think that the flight from SYD is an overnight layover, to meet the 330 that comes empty from where ever, to fly to DEL
Edit: strange, on a Wed, in Apr 2022, if you put in a dummy booking, it puts you through ADL -> SYD, SYD -> BKK, all with QF, then from BKK -> DEL with TG.
Few days ago, direct flights did come up, then maybe someone changed their mind, for 7 days, when I did a dummy booking, it all sent pax via BKK with TG, as we know, no QFF points or QF SC earned this way.
Sun, Mon, Tue, they put you through ADL -> MEL -> DEL.
Maybe in the meantime, while we muse about it, they (QF) have changed their minds about ADL int flights again

Checking Oct 2022, also they put pax through MEL.

I did ask Qantas why they changed from DRW to ADL but didn't get a response. Perhaps they thought it would be easier to have both the SYD & MEL flights going through the same place? Or maybe there was an incentive from the SA government/ADL airport?

As for the international transit arrangement in ADL, I suspect it would be the same as when Qantas flew SYD-ADL-SIN (this used to be QF81/82, before they dropped the ADL stop). As I never took this flight though I can't comment further.

Off-topic : I think a lot of interest is being generated around ADL & SA in the past couple of years. I think the government is moving towards with the idea of making next level of cities ready for immigration, jobs, resources etc.

SYD, MEL and CBR, to a certain extent are "famous" within the migrant community as their first choice of destination when they move to AU. Now, with the "first tier" cities (apologies, couldn't find a better word) filled to the brim with people, the government is looking to open up new cities for possible expansion. I think BNE & ADL are the cities next in line to undergo this.

Real estate prices are also going up in BNE & ADL - I think there is a link between increase in focus on ADL & BNe is making the cities more lucrative to price sensitive REA investors/home owners. Agreed, that in today's climate, REA is not a strong indicator of a cities growth - REA is expensive everywhere in AU.

I have noticed that there is a lot of federal government activity beginning/happening out of BNE & ADL in the recent years. I only started to work as a IT contractor for fed in the past year and I could see a lot of roles based out of BNE and ADL. I get calls from recruitments consultants asking if I'd like to move to and work out of ADL. A very prominent IT outsourcing organisation is opening shop in ADL, with the focus of at least 1000 jobs to be offered in the first year. That's a huge number of roles for an outsourcing org.

May be this is why, QF is also looking to make ADL more prominent on it's routes? I know a very long shot and a very poor comparison, but I think there is a link ...

Most flights around this time have practically sold out and are overselling economy with available j class seats.
Very popular route going outbound.

I suspect it would be the same as when Qantas flew SYD-ADL-SIN (this used to be QF81/82, before they dropped the ADL stop). As I never took this flight though I can't comment further.

And ironically before that it was ADL-DRW-SIN as QF81/82. Was a great domestic leg to fly on with international service and free booze.

DRW got shunted off to the newly formed Australian Airlines flying CNS-DRW-SIN (and later transferred to JQ) and ADL went direct before losing it completely.

No, I don't gain anything by mentioned the newly redeveloped area of ADL airport.
I don't own any shares in AAL either, grin, once CX and MH comes back, that place to fly out of, will be a great one.
OT: pity that (Air)NZ is only using its neo planes ADL -> AKL, not their 787s when they come back flying to ADL.
The last time I cam back from AKL, incoming immi loos were bad, just 2 loos cubicles, and 2 ceramic trays for males to do #1, in 2 toilet zones, this was after deplaning, and prior to passport/incoming customs.
HKG CX came in the same time as my NZ 777, and it was full on with chinese people and their worldy possessions, this was pre covid of course.
Will have to check the QF schedule, non busy school holiday times, to see what the flying time out of ADL -> DEL is like.
Pretty sure its an overnight stopover for the SYD -> ADL sector, as a dom flight.
All the dates that I enter, into QF schedule, one way ADL -> DEL, even Sep shows sector not available, ... ah, maybe a person has to start in SYD to get it, I have kept starting ADL...
If this is so, then it would not serve my friend any good.

Not that I would take it, but like I mentioned above, I know someone who would be in a better travel position, if she were to be able to do the flight direct, than go through SIN/KUL/BKK.
She has been in Aust a long time, but English is not like mine, ..., several times, her husband (not me), couldn't travel with her, it would help her a great deal when she wants to go visit family over there.
Would have to tell her coming back would be via SYD/MEL.

After having a look at it, it will be too expensive for her, and complicated too, for my friend, will have to tell her that.
$1760 above is only Au - India sector, one way, coming back, additional $25xx flex Y fare, one week after the outgoing flight.
For her, ADL -> DEL $1735 is too $$$, thats for sure.

Not sure why there was a need to bold, increase font size etc. my comment was not meant to be taken personally. I live in ADL and pre covid flew in and out of ADL at least weekly for 10+ years and never (out) international. When the ADL airport redevelopment plan was announced I personally thought it was a good idea but after seeing the plans I just started to wonder why this. As for international travel I am happy to fly back into SA but flying out I will continue to catch a dom flight to MEL or SYD and leave from there.

Presumably Australian was after QF flew CNS-DRW-SIN? I remember catching the QF747-StumPy once on a domestic CNS-DRW before it on-flew to SIN ... but we digress, massively!

That was well before my time. When I lived in DRW it was ADL-DRW-SIN on QF A330 and that was replaced with Australian Airlines B767 CNS-DRW-SIN. Never had B747s in my time there unless it was a divert.
