Qantas to Launch SYD-AKL-JFK (June 2023)

Perhaps they'll swap the aircraft for a 737-800? (Joking!)

Has anyone spotted any Classic Flight Reward seats on AKL-JFK recently? I can't find anything, even in Y.
They’ll do an A330 rearranging and swap. Shouldn’t impact timing

Not funny Matt. We're due to leave Sydney on 28 Jul on QF3 to get to Auckland. MrsK will be seriously unimpressed, and me too. At worst I suppose, it would be an A330.

But can you divorce the sectors and find just AKL-JFK?

Even on day 1 when they did the points plane there was no independent QF3/4 AKL-JFK vv

I suspect that this will be like the old QF25/26 situation, where you could get MEL-AKL-LAX/LAX-AKL-MEL but not AKL-LAX/LAX-AKL.

It will be interesting to see if you could request this through Hobart using platinum award release. There is a lot of QF3/4 unsold availability later in the year. I do suspect though they might not release until they have better yield data? But obviously just thinking aloud.

Rumors are that the 3 new 787s meant to arrive in June have been delayed again, not sure what impact that would have on the new routes.

According to this spreadsheet the three aircraft were completed in 2020 and are currently undergoing flight testing. Certainly, impressive to have aircraft that were built near three years ago to be delayed.

I actually got AKL-JFK independently at the time the Points Plane was available for booking. Obviously doesn't mean they won't restrict the ability to do this going forward and require you to start from somewhere in Australia.

Couldn't one just call up Qantas after booking this and say, "can you drop the SYD to AKL sector?"

Whilst the flight has a SYD-AKL sector, a SYD-JFK ticket doesn’t. It might as well be a SYD-LHR flight as far as reservations are concerned. If trying this, it might be better to do using MEL or BNE flight, or a different SYD-AKL connecting flight, and therefore the ticket would have an AKL-JFK sector. But even then, likely to encounter married sector issues.

I must have been slow when I looked since I could only find QF3 ex Syd. having said that, I haven't seen any since even in W or Y

QF3 from SYD - AKL - JFK is not daily, aim for a Wed dep from SYD.
And on this short hop, Business Saver is blanked out, so its the more pricier Business Flex they have on this route.
But on other times, SYD - AKL, they do have Business Saver.
Looking at dummy booking for Jan.

I'm going to shortly be cancelling my jfk -> syd booking for 3 seats in J on the points plane 16th June. They are going to go back into the pool since it was a points plane so it'll be up for grabs.

Interestingly there are currently 7 vacant seats showing on the seating plan for that flight on the 16th. So not sure they’re allowing new bookings as awards as nothing is showing up in Business class when you try an award booking

The seven vacant seats could be those reserved for higher status? There could be pax who just can’t select them yet?

I believe booking that many people for such a flight in coach is considered a war crime (i.e. violation of the Geneva convention) as it represents cruel and unusual punishment.
