Qantas Top-up points (limited-time bonuses)

I am in a similar situation to Lynnelanne, Semi-retired (so it is hard to get approval for cards) but I want to build up points for travel planned for late 2023, and would prefer not to accrue a large quantity of points through wine purchases (although I have ordered the odd box in the past). So I purchased 125,000 points (with 75,000 bonus points).
For us it is still better value than buying flights in J, and I have the time to plan and snap up the flights when they appear.

For $89 more than the cost of purchasing the points (with the bonus) I got 30 bottles of wine as well.

Far better value for me, and helps restock my 200 bottle wine fridge after it was decimated during lockdowns

Thank goodness I'm not alone. I thought I was going crazy, so I did a careful spreadsheet of the costs and benefits and for our situation (which granted is very different to others) it seemed a good deal for us - certainly a significant saving on just paying cash for the flight, also giving us flexibility and moving me to PCP for another year (so that gets me Qantas Club Membership gratis as well).

I realise perhaps other airlines schemes would give a better benefit (e.g., Avios) but they are not currently on sale and there are complications whereas this is straightforward.

However, I eventually tried to make the purchase @esther_a and it didn't go through. Did you have any difficulty?

Yes. I paid, but the points have not yet arrived. Is that what happened to you? The site stated that all you needed to do was log out and in to see the new points, but that didn't work. I have sent a message to Qantas with a copy of the transaction details. I hope this does not turn into another Qantas merry-go-round!

Hi, my payment didn't even go through. *sigh* I was hoping to avoid being on the phone to Qantas. I have better things to do with my day. If it turns out the universe is against me making this transaction then so be it I guess.

I guess I should edit my earlier post....maybe not as straightforward as it should be.

See my earlier posts in this thread. I wasted so much time and got so frustrated. It finally got sorted, but I will never do it again. Should've been an instant credit; it was anything but that!

Yes, I was just re-reading that as I was posting. WTF is wrong with them. Why would you make an offer that can't be purchased. So annoying.

Yes, I had read your post. I am glad I intending to make an award booking right now. So very frustrating for you. I will try not to stress. I've been on the Qantas merry-go-round before. I'm sure they will sort it out. Eventually.

Hi, just thought I'd let you know that I just successfully made the purchase and it immediately showed up on my account, and also added to Points Club etc., so I'm a happy camper.

I have NO CLUE whether this helped but I am a Mac user and I have sometimes had trouble with the combo of the Qantas site and Safari before, so I made this transaction in Google Chrome instead. Everything worked perfectly.

My 2c. $3999 for 240,000 plus a little bit more gets you a classic flight reward to Europe and back in QF, sounds great if you can find the seats. If you need a partner award it’s quite a lot more. Booking in advance you can almost always find J seats in JAL, Finnair or ANA for around about $6000, sometimes as low as $5500. Book on the one world options and you can eat QF or BA points for some short hops around Europe when you get there.

While there are some good fares via Tokyo for $6k, for those only wanting QF the points sale could represent value (if you can find the seats).

The alternative of course is still via Asia… multiple sales for Jakarta and Singapore to Paris in the region on USD1900 in business class, flying SQ and GF (ex CGK/SIN respectively).

Taxes and fees had escaped my mind but good point.

Of course you have to factor in the cost downside of going via Tokyo which is stopping for a night or two and having to have a few really good dinners while you are there.

Thanks, I'm slightly confused about why you were asking about top-up points if you have "more than enough," but anyhow another comment on your Cathay Pacific plans - approximately when are your flights scheduled through HKG? Just be aware there is a pretty big risk there. Many such flights have been canceled and Qantas will be unable to help you find replacements in most cases (they will just refund the points). It is hoped that HKG transits will return "some time" later this year, but whether Cathay Pacific will still be solvent (will it be rescued by the HK/Chinese government?), is unclear.

Hi again @jpp42. Despite not originally being all that concerned about Cathay, your comments played on my mind and I just thought I'd let you know I just changed this morning to Qatar. Interestingly, it wasn't difficult at all to find availability, but now there is none so I must have grabbed the two available seats. Now I'm excited to try the famous Q suite.
