I believe the AKL QF lounges open at 4:00am.

Can confirm this. Arrived from SCL 2 weeks ago. Due at 5:55am, I think, actual arrival approx 5:25am.

I was sure lounge would be open due to early QF flights. But did take notice of opening hours as I arrived. It was 4am.

Thanks all for the replies... seems the lounge will only be open at 4am :-(
But how about any food stalls open as well ??
I am sure i can survive 4 hours without lounge provided wifi and food/drinks available..

Have a look at the Auckland Airport web site: link
Most F&B outlets open at 4.30am but there are a handful that are 24/7 and others that open at 4am.

Wifi is free for the first 30 minutes and then is pay-in after that.

Definitely several outlets open 24/7 landside but not too sure about airside? Can't imagine there's that many people inside between midnight and 4am to make it worthwhile.

Do they have any couch type seats or anywhere to try and get a few hours kip (like at SIN)? I didn't notice such things on recent visits, but it wasn't really what I was looking for :)

Not many open airside when I did this, but I think the fast food places were open. There were a fair number of people there, I even got woken up at about 2am to see if I was on some flight or other.
30 minutes of free wifi as mentioned. It's also per day, so you might be able to get in 2 lots of 30 minutes.

Yep, I found seats that I could lay down on. Down along the gates 1-10 arm - go up a level. There are also good couches in the main hub area, but I thought that was a bit too lit up. There are some great secluded booths at the bar called "1958" near burger king. But those seemed to be full when I got there on the flight from BNE. Worth checking.

This was my mistake. I thought it was 5, got fed up at 4:30 and wandered down to the lounge to find it was open.

Seems you've done the flights now. How was it? what did you do at AKL? etc.?

Which row would be best for sleeping (or attempting to) on an overnight flight?

On the 737, probably row 2? Better legroom than row 1, and you aren't reclining into the front row of economy if you want to put the seat back.

Row 4, in Y, is probably further away from row 3 in J than row 3 is from row 2, if you are bothered about reclining into someone.

Agree - row 4 legroom better than any in J in my experience. I've also never encountered someone in row 3 reclining (some mental barrier perhaps!).

Row 3 would also have benefit of furthermost distance from light from the front of the cabin - though it is fairly dark. Window seat also better obviously.

Funny, I always recline if in Row 3 - I know how much space there is behind my seat.

Only disadvantage with row 3 is you may well miss out on your meal choice. There again, even Row 1 is no guarantee - on a recent QF Link flight into ADL, there was a steak sandwich option - but only 3 loaded - so despite being in Row 1 - I was the 4th person and missed out. Grrr.

That's ridiculous !

Overnight flight are somewhat different, I don't see many people eating so would be very surprised if meals ran out.

Thanks everyone for your input. The flight in question is the QF151 MEL-AKL service, departing 2335 and arriving 0510. Do they even serve a proper breakfast on this flight? (Booking engine only says refreshment.) If not I guess I'm not too fussed on not getting my first choice of meal if seated in row 3. My main consideration would be stretching out comfortably to try to get some sleep.

Flight has supper (usually a soup, a small plate and one meal choice - from memory). No breakfast as far as I recall. On one flight they offered coffee / breakfast juice and a muffin or Danish at top of descent.

Has anyone flown trans-Tasman J on a breakfast flight since they started the "new" meal service?

I'm keen to give QF J a go next month when I visit AKL, but both of my flights are early morning departures. Is it worth upgrading?

Here is the menu from today's flight QF124. Menu says its JUN16 so I assume cause it's the first of a new quarter they haven't gotten round to releasing a new menu yet (if they even update TT menus quarterly). The FA did warn me the poached eggs would not be good...and she was 100% correct

[-]Sorry I'm on my phone, and AFF automatically makes these photos sideways[/-]

Service started off as not the usual great Jetconnect service, but once I told the J FA I'd be finishing the bottle of Duval-Leroy she became much friendlier and almost offended when I declined her offer to open a second bottle. Incidentally, she told me they no longer load Tobasco sauce anymore...despite having bloody Mary's on the menu
