I was thinking the same early last month but decided to try one of the ordinary looking crumbed chicken things - it was surprisingly good.

Best bet is to try bit of everything to see what you like most.

I've always found the Akl EK lounge to be very good. The servers there are lovely. Food variety is also excellent, including great seafood more often than not. Only once in maybe 10 visits have I been disappointed.

Not surprising that buffet food will be a bit on the bland side. Can't compete with a restaurant style service as per an F lounge.

Yes it gets crowded. I usually eat and have a couple of good wines, then head to the QF F lounge for a bit of quiet.

Sadly the EK lounge will be closed when I depart Akl later this week.

Russ, there is always the LA(N) metal in J.
The South American Spanish is quite different compared to the EK in flight announcements. Only chance to hear Spanish on my flights, them LA flights.
Occasionally they (LA) do carry the QF flight number, so you can earn the full gamut of SC flying LA metal QF flight number, SYD - AKL.
I have only done it in whY, tight as, next time I go across to NZ, or come back to Au, will try LA J with a QF flight number.

Just saw this, on the QF website, wow. I know J is not all that flash, compared to F.
Business Sale.
SYD - AKL in J, can choose between LA(N) metal with a QF flight number for, wait for it, Aud$549!!!
If I had the $ I would book straight away now.
As at 23:43 03Sept15.

Slightly OT: Have SYD-AKL booked in Y next week, I don't have much experience with QF/Jetconnect 737-8's, and currently have row 4 EF selected, are these reasonable choices? From what I gather there's no bulkhead behind J..

Yes, row 4 is good. Plenty of leg room. Just like row 4 on QF domestic.

Correct but tempered with, narrower seat cushion as IFE and Tray table in the armrests (so much so Mrs Blackcloud refuses to sit in them something about women have bigger hips than men:confused:), you cannot have the IFE out to watch on the ground or after cabin is prepared for descent (at least 30 minutes less viewing time) and IIRC the tray table is smaller as well.

Its good if you have a fat person next to you, their fat has to just squish in and cant spread into your space.

Is there a QF F lounge in AKL ?
That's interesting - is it better than the EK J lounge ?
When was the last time QF flew a plane with F to NZ ?

You enter the QF J lounge first, up the escalators at AKL int airport, and the F lounge is on the left hand side, with you facing the J counter.
Its a goldy coloured frosted sliding door.

I flew on QF163 to WLG last night. Only 2 people in J. (I was in Y.)

Define better. On most metrics, probably not. Certainly not for F&B. Think BNE F lounge rather than MEL/SYD.

As far as the F&B goes in the QF F lounge its little meat pies, sandwiches or BYO Hungry Jacks. Drinks are J standard. The EK lounge is far superior IMO.

Last week in AKL F lounge

I decided to go with the lounge food and not eat on the plane. The pie was really nice.

That is surprising as when I used to regularly fly WLG-SYD in J the FA told me they rarely saw under 7 pax there and from my experience it was usually 7-10 pax, they noted that the EK alliance did increase the loading. I however not flown WLG-SYD that often in the last 18 months, and that would have been twice in Y. I wonder if the low loading had anything to do with the day of the week as I remember once that I took a QF117 (same flight before they renumbered it to QF163) flight years ago and Saturday night there were only 30 something pax in the entire plane, I was in J with 2 others.

I would have expected a Friday night flight to be one of the busiest. Y was only about 60% full though.
