Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

QF Platinum here, myself and a no status family member are traveling on QF75 tomorrow on seperate bookings.
I requested upgrade from premium economy to business for both of us via my account at almost exactly the same time from my account.
I received an upgrade at T-72, however my +1 still now at T-24 has received nothing.

I don't currently have expert flyer so couldn't watch the loads, however there were 10 business seats available when I received my upgrade (after T80 so the blocked seats had opened) and it stayed that way until earlier today at approx T-36 most the seats filled up, which I assume was another tranche of upgrades. I understand that seat maps aren't an accurate representation of the loads for a variety of reasons but I believe it was good enough to notice when the upgrades went through.
The upgrade system works in mysterious ways! Now I have to explain to said family member that they will be alone in PE while I am up the front 😂

Just for extra data: My ticket was booked direct with QF, the family member booked with Amex travel.
Your family member is assessed at the Bronze level, not at yours. This is why.

It is now showing as J2 C2 D1.

Oh really? I believed if you did “upgrade a family member” they are assessed at your level. Not sure where I got that from but is that not the case?

No. That would only happen if pax in the same booking.

The only situation where the upgrade sponsor's status has influence is for P1's - however even then, the recipient is still assessed at their status level and window, but at the top priority. So, if I put in a request for a Bronze family member, they would still be assessed at the Bronze timeframe, but (in theory) ahead of others at that level (if there's more than one P1 sponsored upgrade, then the usual weightings of fare paid and so on is applied).

That is unique to P1 only as far as I know. All other upgrades are assessed at only the recipients status level as though they requested it themselves.

I had a similar experience with my upgrade on QF72.

4 of us travelling in total, 3x on 1 booking direct with QF, myself on my own separate booking made thru Amex Travel.

Upgrade requests were sent from a P1 account, the booking with my 3 companions was upgraded at T-72, nothing for me. P1 told me not to check in until we get to the airport just in case.

Right up until we went to drop bags, it seemed like I'd be travelling solo in Y while everyone else got upgraded, then when I printed my bag tag, J bag tags came out and my boarding pass said I was in J, seat 2F.

I never got an upgrade confirmation text and the Qantas app said I was in my economy seat until after we landed, however the physical boarding pass had me in J and there was no issues on the flight when I sat in 2F.

This is only true if the upgrade request comes from a Platinum One account.

After receiving the F upgrade I was choofed about experiencing F on QF1. At the SYD F Lounge I was asked to swap seats so a couple could sit together (Which I think is silly in solo seats antyhow..). But who am I to complain..so I did.

Boarded, no welcome, no drink, no nibbles..Everyone else around is seated well after me getting served and I'm there..nothing, only just before push back do I get asked..Turns out the seat I had swapped into was intended for a staff member, hence the lack of any welcome..

The crew did apologise to me, and I explained it was odd, but thanked them for the explanation at least.

But I'm still convinced that F class is not worth paying for, I'll take J thanks - especially as someone who doesn't eat any seafood!

... Or just that Qantas has NFI how to deliver customer service at a level that warrants F class 😁
That's the thing, you get a little more space, and a little better service, but it's not a massive leap from J. Perhaps QF J is actually not a bad product then?

That was the first mistake ;)

In hindsight, perhaps just say ‘No’ to seat change requests if you are happy with the original seat allocation
Well my thinking was, it's F is there's no such thing as a bad seat . But I know for next time if requested like this again to check that the passenger details are updated. But at lest it did stick with my rule of "moving forward" requests!

I feel like they could make a TV show out of this.
Its such a hard question isn't it?

On one hand, from what's been written here I don't get the impression that there was a genuine hardship case or that their flight would be super impacted by not being able to stay together.

On the other hand, I can appreciate the social pressure and guilt - amplified by the fact that you are going to be imagining their eyes on the back (front?) of your head staring with frustration for the whole flight if you say no.

Well I would find it a hard choice, anyway 🤨

To update, my +1 received upgrade from PE to J at the gate. No notification or anything prior. The gate staff didn’t even say anything. They scanned the BP it had an error “seating error” they picked up an already printed boarding pass scanned it and handed it over without saying anything. The BP had +1 details so they were expecting us. Walking down the jet bridge looked at the BP and saw now seated in business.

To summarise:
QF75 SYD > YVR
PE > Business
Booked and requested in October
Platinum member: upgraded at T-72
Bronze: upgraded at gate

QF2 succesful for plat. SIN-SYD
Y to J
T60 confirmation relatively light load from checking EF
After my QF2 delay, moved to QF292 Y. System said no to upgrade (i imagine other Rev J moved too).

However got free gate upgrade to W as this flight is now likely completely full. Given i received a upgrade unsuccessful, i imagine this is an opup and not points.

QF 11 / 12 J to F both ways, about 6 days before. Currently have lots of points but agree, incremental step up from J. Bed is very comfortable. And the food / wine was good

QF479 SYD-MEL Apr 8 (Long way off I know) Y-J Successful. QF has a discrepancy over whether it's a b737 or an a330, so hoping it's the latter
