Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Seat map should be a giveaway…:p
They took away seat selection this morning... (Upgrade went through last night and it was a 737). App is showing some weird things (A 737 with a 1-2-1 seating config and lie flat seats) so I'm not sure what's going on.

EF shows 479/8APR as a 73H and the J cabin is showing 73H with seats in row 3 taken.

Just had the thought of checking there too 😂
Woe is me, 737 it is again. I did book it as an a330 but thought it was weird when it directed me to a 737 seat map when I was still in econ.

QF11 SYD - LAX platinum status. Unsuccessful Y to J, but successful upgrade to premium economy backup option as had checked the box. Notified successful to PE at -20h.

I watched on expertflyer as J9 went down to J1 at -24h, and a dozen seats open up on the seat map in PE at the same time… either a lot of P/P1/CL in PE, or they processed PE upgrades before Y plat.

Still hoping for a gate upgrade, but not sure if I’m still in the running or if QF considers my upgrade processed?

Annoyingly you can’t tick the gate upgrade box without also requesting to be upgraded to PE if business not available. I would be pretty annoyed if I got upgraded to middle seat PE at the gate from my Y bulkhead/Y row to myself. Think I’d be asking to have my old seat back!

Had exactly this happen to me on QF2. Went from bulkhead window seat in Y to middle seat middle row of PE and was considering trying to be downgraded back. They had actually filled Y too by then so there was no where to go. Despite that I actually had a somewhat comfortable flight.

How do you find PE compared to Y? The price difference doesn’t seem worth it m (I’ve never flown it myself)

Far better

I had a free upgrade once to the USA
Then paid for PE on another trip (on which the seat recline (footrest) was broken on the return trip

However, This is where the major problems lay in that service recovery is non-existent so you’re stuck with a broken seat - and expected to suck it up instead of them pro-actively recognising you paid for a seat that worked and didn’t get given it - just another Q cop-out - 15 years ago

Perhaps it’s the extra seat pitch
The somewhat better “sticky” wine or maybe the 2 seats plenty of space legroom or the conversation with my “new once off friendly Sydney hairdresser”

It’s meant to be a step up but nothing beats a lie flat

I haven’t flown long haul Y in 10 years, so I can’t really say 😂
But I did find PE even middle middle seat pretty comfortable. PE is what Y “should” be. If you are under 6ft I find it comfortable. A family member is over 6ft and said they can’t make the leg rest work for them. Previously I’ve had a window seat with a shadow and that flight was exceptionally comfortable. I actually find the blanket provided to PE more comfortable than the J blanket. Also the J service is so god damn slow, if you want to eat quickly then be left alone than PE has its benefits over J. Obviously nothing beats the space and bed.

QF2 LHR - SYD Gold (but tipped into Platinum once boarded)

Upgrade at gate Y to J for LHR - SIN leg only (no new boarding pass for SIN - SYD) but noticed in lounge at Singapore that the 130k+ pts had been taken for upgrade QF2 London/Sydney.

Lounge staff in Singapore couldn't confirm upgrade but thought it might at the gate but no 'bad beep' unfortunately.

Anyone else experienced this before? Assume I'll get some of those points back since the upgrade wasn't for the entire flight?

I would be ringing QF to make sure.

Hiya, I’m only a NB flying QF1 (SYD-SIN only) in J on 31/03/24 with an adult companion with the same status, on the same booking.
We put in a request for F T-7mths, any likelihood you’ve seen that we may be successful, or should I forget any chance given we’re behind all other tiers? Very happy in J so no dramas, but would love to experience F as neither of us have before.

I would hazard a guess slim to none being only bronze?

Hi AJS, unfortunately with the way that QF international upgrades work, you won't know either way until much closer to the travel date... maybe not even until the day of travel. Given that 31/04/2024 doesn't exist, I can't check how full your specific flight is... but as Mr Murray alludes to, the odds are probably unlikely for 2 with no status anyway.

Cheers,
Matt.

Assuming this should be 30/4, the F cabin looks quite empty at the moment (F9 on both the LHR and SIN legs) but it's way too early to tell.

I would think chances are very slim - there are 70 J seats to complete against on the flagship route, including any Bronze requests on LHR-SYD likely to trump your request on SIN-SYD. I'd suggest checking back within 24 hours of departure, after the Platinum One, Plat and Gold requests have been processed.

Hopefully a few people buy/upgrade to F on the LHR-SIN leg only leaving some seats available on the SIN-SYD leg for upgrades, but expect to fly J and you won't be disappointed.

Cheers Matt, yeah experience has shown me I won’t hear before T-24 but fair to say I won’t even be getting my hopes up then either ha

Thanks @sudoer - apologies that was meant to say 31/03 (rather than 30/04) - my bad!

We’re flying SYD-SIN rather than SIN-SYD, assuming that will make little difference though?
