Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Happy to report J->F upgrade on QF94 LAX-MEL came a little earlier than expected - well at the 7 day and 9 minute mark to be exact :)

I was not terribly surprised given the rather full J cabin I was in and the ~50% allocated F cabin. Definitely a nice way to head home on such a long sector. Thanks QF Upgrade Fairy :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Got denied Y to J but received W on Flight QF7 on 12/12/15. 2 x Bronze status and upgrades requested in September. Did not receive any notification from Qantas but I was checking the Qantas app and my booking started showing as Null at about T-19. Checked the website and saw the Premium Economy upgrade.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

My success rate for 2015 was 6 out of 7 for my personal upgrades (all domestic). My success rate for 2015 for upgrades for family members was 2 from 4 (all domestic).

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Success AKL-SYD and SYD to HKG Y->J. Received the SMS at T-28.5.My first time in J on QF - looking forward to it :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Last two trips back from LAX on QF94 I've been successful in upgrades:

Jul 2015 - Y -> Y+ at the gate (had requested J with Y+ as an alternative)
Jan 2016 - Y -> J got the SMS at T-10

I take that back. My J upgrade was downgraded back to Y (with a full refund of points) about 2 hours before tonight's flight. Apparently J was oversold due to other delays. Not happy.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Just received an SMS confirming my upgrade from J to F on QF7 from SYD-DFW tomorrow (20/1/16).

Very excited as this is my first time in both the F Lounge, and actually flying F itself.

By the time I arrive home, I will also hit LTS, which is a small milestone, but still of note nonetheless.

Thanks QF - and to contributors on AFF for the advice and tips along the way on maximising my chances! :D

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Y->J 20 minutes prior to boarding on QF128.

Didn't hear anything at T-48 and asked at check-in but apparently it was a sold out flight. Gave it another shot closer to departure in the lounge and got upgraded!

There was probably commercial no shows so those seats wouldn't be released until the flight was closed for checkin around one hour prior to departure.

You obviously opted in for an airport upgrade.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Declined Y to J or Y to PE on QF74 SFO to SYD on 15/01 - 2 x Bronze members :(

For future reference, are your chances higher to upgrade from PE to J than PE to J if you have Bronze status?

Being bronze means that you're lowest on the pecking order. WP1/WP/SG/PS will have priority over you for upgrades. So I don't think your chances will be higher.

A sad update - QF7 has been postponed about seven hours and so would mess up my onward itinerary. So I now have a Business seat on QF17 to LAX and then a connecting AA flight. To have come so close to F, and then miss out, is a total First World Problem. But it's still a bit of a bummer. :( *sigh*

I know how that feels. Had a Y-J upgrade back when the 744 was doing the rounds to SIN, and the old F was sold as J. The flight was delayed by 6 hours (and subbed with a refurb). I ended up taking a different flight, with the upgrade refunded.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Would I be correct in assuming that the chances of a QF Bronze getting a points upgrade from J to F on QF1 in late July or QF2 in mid September would be only marginally above zero? There will be 2 people travelling, both QFF Bronze. I have 300,000 QFF points and trying to get the best value out of them.

QF1/2 are very popular flights. Your assumption is accurate regarding the chances of getting two seats in F.
Your best bet would be going via MEL on QF9/10, still a long shot but slightly better odds.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Are these periods school holidays in either or both originating states?

boomy has given great advice, the only other tips I can offer is to fly mid week and to keep an eye on your seats and maybe move to Emerald City (rows 11-13) in J when the other upgrades clear.
