Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Successful at T-28 for upgrade PE to J on QF63 SYD-JNB on Thu 14 September as WP. Interestingly, I also had an op-up Y to J on the connecting flight BNE-SYD that morning in which I was seated next to an unaccompanied minor travelling in business class (only males in the cabin).

Declined within 20 hours for upgrade PE to J on QF64 JNB-SYD on Sun 8 October due to business class being full of rugby players.

Declined on QF35 and 36 to/from SIN on Oct 6 and 13. Both flights 100% full though. Didn't we used to get an email or text if unsuccessful in the past? I received neither both times...

Can't recall getting a message indicating upgrade declined, at least not in recent years. That way there's always hope for an at-gate upgrade.....

QF73 SYD to SFO
Flex Y to J
Confirmed about 20 minutes before T-60

Had been hoping a seat in the nose or upstairs would be available, but it wasn't, but a seat in J is a seat in J! Got an aisle seat.
Was able to switch to a seat upstairs when I checked in.

Got the upgrade for QF74 SFO to SYD (also Flex Y to J) and got a seat in the nose for the flight home.

Right, we expect a trip report with a thousand photos and experiences - but once you have experienced F, it will be very hard to ever go back and slum it in Y. Congratulations, mviy

Happy husband ( thought there was an operational upgrade thread ?)
He wasn't able to request as no 1st class from LAX to JFK

That continues my 100% success rate so far on this route! Though my previous upgrades were from PE.

One has to love the upgrade lottery when you're successful!

I have had reasonable success with upgrades on the SYD to SFO / SFO to SYD as SG. I’m 7 for 8 at the moment. The only time I missed out was due to a snow storm on the east coast of the USA that resulted in a number of passengers being rerouted via SFO.

J->F for QF94 LAX-MEL 1 week and 3 minutes out (as P1). Totally expected as flight has been F9 A9 forever. someone else was upgraded so guess 2 P1's on the list.

+1 PY to J on QF93 tomorrow. Got notification at T-28. Cabin was only about 60% full so could snag a seat in row 11. I am in Sydney so am connecting through QF417 - requested an upgrade for that too which was successful (was not approved immediately but got the text 3 hours before the QF93 text).

Interesting posts here. My family and I are heading to Athens in October from Melbourne in Business class through qantas (using their multi-city booking we will be phyisically flying on Emirates.

I am wondering if it is worth buying economy and rolling the dice on a points upgrade? Unfortunately in the past year my FF status has dropped to Bronze. The fallback is paying the points premium as a classic rewards.
