Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Interesting posts here. My family and I are heading to Athens in October from Melbourne in Business class through qantas (using their multi-city booking we will be phyisically flying on Emirates.

I am wondering if it is worth buying economy and rolling the dice on a points upgrade? Unfortunately in the past year my FF status has dropped to Bronze. The fallback is paying the points premium as a classic rewards.

You can use points to upgrade on QF operated flights, don’t believe it’s possible for EK even if booked on QF flight number.

Correct. QF points cannot be used to upgrade on an EK operated flight regardless of whether QF or EK code.

yeah well no this isn't going to work.

Though yoour post is a little confusing. Have you actually booked this trip in Business flying Emirates metal (eg: QF8xx_ flight numbers)? Or just considering it?

Either way, you won't be able to upgrade Emirates sectors, even with a QF flight number, with QF points so stick with the Business flights, or if you can find reward seats then grab them while you can... though again your post is a bit ambigious in reading to me.

QF9 MEL-LHR, Y to PE successful at T-28. That's 1 success out of 1 attempt, I'm an SG batting 100%! For now...

Had a nice seat selected in the upstairs Y cabin, so I wasn't very serious about trying for this upgrade and only requested it about a week before the flight.

27 Dec Y->J points upgrade confirmed at the gate for SYD-SCL!!!

However LATAM has managed to screw up the rest of the trip:
- sending my luggage to a different airport in South America to the one I flew to and taking 3 days to reunite me with it
- currently stranding 200+ passengers at AKL on the SCL-AKL-SYD return journey with a 9 hour delay awaiting their 'crew rest' - which they knew 24 hours in advance but didn't bother to rebook anyone onto earlier QF AKL-SYD services. They also helpfully failed to notify any passengers of the delay until we had all deplaned in Auckland and looked at the departures board to see that the AKL-SYD flight is now scheduled for the afternoon. Latin American efficiency at it's best.

Can someone give me a sense of current capacity/likelihood of success, economy to business, on QF73 on Thursday? I’m gold, requested for my Mum (bronze).

Thanks

The origin and destination are needed for the search. Flight numbers only help at the end of the search process.

QF24 BKK-SYD
2xWP & 1xPS child
Y-J A330-300 J suite
Confirmed almost 50 hours in advance, which I have never had before, always been around 24hours.

QF74 (SFO-SYD) 11-Jan-18 Y->J confirmed T-22 (or thereabouts). Ticket was ‘H’ class. Requested as WP.

Surprised I got it since it was showing J4 C4 yesterday.

QF8 DFW to SYD, upgraded from Premium Economy to Business, at the gate! -50K points, but so worth it for this flight given the distance.

Interesting experience, asked at the counter about 10mins prior to boarding and they said unsuccessful as business is full. Boarding scanned and got the beep (first time ever for me at the gate). Also, there were a number of others with higher status (colleagues) all with upgrade requests so felt pretty good that I jumped them in the queue, no idea how though.

CBR/BNE 27 Dec x 2 successful at T-26. My points for my parents to return home from a week visiting friends. They loved the QF Business Lounge access and the significantly better food & beverages on board. 20,000 points well spent (actually 16,800 nett as I transferred the earned flight points to me)

shbap well done to you. If you don't mind me asking what is you status compared to your colleagues, I have observed through seat reduction a perceived 2 x SG @ T-24 receiving J/F upgrade over 1 x WP to utilise every seat in F. It seems that Qantas do not always follow the hierarchical upgrade process as outlined in there promotion material.

A few data points from our recent USA trip.

2 x WP on same booking. Booked in PE on QF15 and QF107 on 26/12 and QF8 on 08/01.

Upgrade to J confirmed for QF107 48 hours out.
Upgrade to J on QF15 28 hours out.
Upgrade J on QF8 confirmed 24 hours out.

On QF8, all cabins had been showing "0" at time of award of upgrade.
