Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Zero success on QF9 DRW-LHR on 01 April.

Expert flyer had 0 on J and Y+ so I was expecting it. Seat map was showing vacant seat next to me.... Then the last passenger onboard slipped right in there.

I blame this forum for showing me effective ways to sit in better seats. Hurts more now when it doesn't happen

QF10 on my way home next week is J9 so 🤞🤞

There have never been "free" upgrades as a published perk for Platinum members per se. Most likely this was an operational upgrade (op up) which are pretty rare, specially on dom, but they do happen. Obviously as a WP one is most disposed to receive an op up due to status, so I suppose it can be considered a free Platinum upgrade, but I see this as a different situation. For example, in the rare situation of an op up being processed and the highest ranking status member on board being a Gold, one presumes they will get i.

It's pretty rare for P1 these days to get a complementary upgrade, which is an unpublished benefit, but is a thing.. or has been at least.

There were quite a few seats spare on the seat map when I checked about 45 mins prior to departure, even a spare seat in 4E, so I was pleasantly surprised when I stuck my phone under the scanner at the gate and saw the upgrade

oh 45 mins prior?! that is COMMON in domestic J I promise you. Usually once boarding starts or just prior the seat map will fill with standbys, staff and/or lODU's.

I've sat in a seat on a 737 and literally refreshed the seat map and see them fill in a matter of minutes. So 45 min prior seeing empties is not surprising.

I am going to guess, with no information whatsoever, that there were a bunch of standbys AND/OR perhaps a later flight flight was cancelled or some other thing caused the need for seats on the aircraft in Y, so you (and maybe others) got bumped up (hooray) to fit others on.

either way you got lucky :)

It also helps to be travelling solo. If there is a need to op-up one passenger, a solo Gold traveller will trump a Platinum couple.

I had an op-up on BNE to MEL before the pandemic and it was a nice feeling to be seated in business having paid for economy. Also with the longer flight being seated near the back of the cabin wasn't as big of an issue as it is for shorter domestic flights.

Was somewhat disappointed to only be upgraded from fully flex Y to Y+ on the return QF94 LAX-MEL leg on April 7th. Even more so when there were unused J seats in the cabin.

I sometimes wonder whether not ticking the Y+ option would yield different results.

First failure in a while, trying to upgrade 3 pax from Y to J flying SYD-BNE. Not very surprising given peak holiday time, and had been showing low numbers in J/C/D for days prior:

Just had my Hawaii flight cancelled so am going a day earlier. Sad part I lost my queue position for upgrade :(

There's no such thing as an upgrade queue, it's based on several factors, but time requested isn't one of them.

Perhaps it used to be, it's a common myth. Definitely not true now.
