Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

QF1/2 are very popular flights. Your assumption is accurate regarding the chances of getting two seats in F.
Your best bet would be going via MEL on QF9/10, still a long shot but slightly better odds.

Thanks for the reply.

From Brisbane QF9 is $500 to $1000 dearer than QF1, and QF10 doesn't even appear as an option for the return flight. If the chances aren't much better, it's just going to make for a longer, more expensive flight. It's not particularly good value, but maybe I'll just make a Points Plus Pay booking to discount the J tickets a bit.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

QC Bronze, success T-24 BNE-PER QF 651 new J config, upgraded a sale red e deal $220 + 20K points, very happy considering my misses was already confirmed in J.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Did it again, booked the missus a 16k J award SYD-BNE 8th March, I booked with my free Qantas amex flight redemption. Submitted upgrade request yesterday for 10k, T-850 got the magical text, success

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Does anyone know if pre-ordering your meal (with Select on Q-Eat in MMB) adversely affects your chances of an upgrade?

Hasn't for me when upgrading J->F to the USA.

Pre-selected meals each time and upgrades have still come through (I am WP).

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Two more entries to add... I was unsuccessful with my request for upgrade on QF81 SYD-SIN last Saturday (22nd Feb). I was flying solo on a Full Flex fare, with the request in some months prior, however this was a full flight, ahead and behind of the curtain, and so no dice.

I was, however, successful with my upgrade request on the return journey arriving yesterday on QF6. I was extra chuffed with this as I had moved my flight from QF82 to QF6 after monitoring loads on EF for a while and deciding the chances on QF82 were too slim. Notice came at about T-28 hours. The only negative was that it was the last of the untouched 333s with the Skybed MKI (QPJ?), rather than having the new-ish suites. Though still, far better than being in Y on the same bird for an overnight flight.

Overall WP upgrade success rate now at 91%

Cheers,
Matt.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

This is my success rate over the years as QP asking for upgrade on the web resulted in maybe 2 successes, all the rest were from asking in the lounge before departure and 1 at the kiosk when checking in. These are also mostly with two of us flying, and going back ~10 years.
Dom Y to J 18/26
Intl Y to J 1/1

More recently as SG all successes using the web except for 1 from the lounge where we had to sit in different rows these are all in the past ~18 months.
Dom Y to J 6/9
Intl Y to J 1/2

Mostly between Perth and Melbourne.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

QF824 BNE-DRW

Upgrade success Y->J

Red E-Deal with a J2 loading at T-6 hours but text came through.

J was full, Y fairly full.

Hi guys, bit confused as I thought you can't upgrade on Sale fares? Or is the upgrade a result of the "Bid Now Upgrade"?

Hi guys, bit confused as I thought you can't upgrade on Sale fares? Or is the upgrade a result of the "Bid Now Upgrade"?

No bid now just a regular upgrade requested online.

Domestic upgrades no problem on discount fares international is not allowed I think.

From Qantas:

You can request an Australian domestic Classic Upgrade Reward~ on Qantas operated Australian domestic flights (with a QF flight number on your ticket) from:

Classic Flight Reward Economy to Business
Discount Economy~~ to Business
Economy~~ to Business

And:

an international Classic Upgrade Reward for Qantas operated services with a QF flight number from 1 to 199~ on your ticket any time after you have paid for your ticket and received confirmation, up until 24 hours before your flight leaves.

You may request an international Classic Upgrade Reward~ from:

Classic Flight Reward Economy to Premium Economy
Economy~~~ (excluding Discount Economy E, N, O and Q class₪) to Premium Economy (where availableπ)
Flexible Economy~~~ to Premium Economy (where availableπ)
Classic Flight Reward Economy to Business
Economy~~~ (excluding Discount Economy E, N, O and Q class₪) to Business
Flexible Economy~~~ to Business
Classic Flight Reward Premium Economy to Business
Premium Economy or Flexible Premium Economy (where availableπ) to Business
Business or Flexible Business to First

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

For domestic flights, all revenue fares are upgradable.

I said revenue fares, but it's true that now Classic rewards flights are also upgradable. So the only flights which cannot be upgraded are international sale fare (O,Q,N). I don't remember QF selling E fare on international flights?

Ah ok, thanks for the detailed explanation Croupier :). I've got some upcoming trips SYD-HKG-PVG and return HKG-SYD, unfortunately in N class. I guess it's not really worth cancelling the last leg and rebooking a different fare class? At least I'll know the difference in fare terms and conditions for next time! Anyway, don't want to go too off topic

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

FF Status: Silver

Upgrade requests placed last May, Y+ -> J:
28/02/2013 QF1 SYD - DXB = Success (at Gate)
2/3/2016 QF1 DXB - LHR = Fail

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Y-J success for MEL-BNE for Mrs_O. Requested by me since she didn't have enough points.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

At least the longer flight was upgraded :-)

True :) But in penance, for the DXB - LHR leg the upgrade gods put me next to a 2yr old who was not happy to be there, and certainly was not having any of this "sit quietly and watch the tv" nonsense. So no sleep for me on that leg :(.
