You wonder about the knock-on effect of this diversion. A7-APJ is currently still on the ground in MEL, maybe crew timeout? Even if they get the bird up to SYD from Mel, with congested SYD airspace now, sounds quite tough to turn around the bird before 2300. Might imply a night in SYD for many.

2123pm update: The A380 just departed MEL and now on its way to SYD - to be seen what happens with the return flight tonight to Doha.

0020am update: A380 now visible and moving on tarmac on F24 - that’s a nasty fine for QR to get a dispensation to depart with an A380 at this time out of SYD - but QR is probably happier to pay that fine then hotels, transport, crew hours, vouchers, and having an A380 delayed.

Do airlines pay fines in such circumstances?

I thought there were three stipulations that must be fulfilled before 'the delegate' of the Federal Minister for Transport grants a dispensation to take off after 2300 hours.

On Tuesday 28 February 2023, QR909 (A388 A7-APJ) as the 2200 hours MEL-DOH took off at 2306, arriving at gate today (Wednesday 1 March) at 0540 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule.

QR908 on Thursday 4 May 2023, the 2000 hours DOH-SYD (A388 A7-API) did not take off until 0020 hours on Friday, arriving at 2025 hours, 195 minutes tardy. As at 2233 hours it was second in the queue for takeoff of its scheduled 2100 hours SYD-DOH QR909, so should be more than an hour late arriving in the Middle East.

I am not in Sydney but on Sunday 21 May 2023 at 1730 hours - peak period - it appears SYD may be down to only using the east-west runway.

QR908 (A388 A7-APH) had been running early but was placed in a hold so gate arrival will be at about 1744 hours, 34 late.

A388 A7-APC on QR908, the 2000 hours Monday 29 May 2023's DOH down to SYD was airborne at 2205 hours. Tuesday 30 sees likely at gate arrival of 1824 hours, 74 late. The returning QR909 is not scheduled to push back until 2100 hours so in theory it should depart on time, although not with a huge margin given these are the biggest birds in the sky.

A388 A7-APC on QR906, the Monday 3 July 2023 scheduled 2000 hours mid evening DOH-SYD that took off at 2122 hours arrievd SYD on Tuesday 4 at 1742 hours, 32 late.

A388 A7-APH on QR908, the 2000 hours mid evening DOH-SYD on Saturday 5 August 2023 took off at 2307. Sunday 6 arrival at gate is shortly at 1954 hours, 164 minutes late. The 2100 hours QR909 back to DOH may be off blocks around an hour late if all goes well.

On Wednesday 9 August, QR989, the 1520 hours mid afternoon MEL-DOH (B773ER A7-BAO) was airborne at 1647 so expected at gate arrival is 2338 hours, 48 minutes behind schedule.
