Qatar Airways to acquire 25% of Virgin Australia

The Australian Federation of Airline Pilot president Ben Bollen said as long as there was a hard cut-off of five years for the wet lease arrangement, with a commitment at three years on either continuing or ending flights to Doha, the deal would be a positive for the 800 Virgin pilots it represents.

“Without this deal, Virgin would struggle to compete internationally, limiting career advancement and job security,” said Mr Bollen. “By leveraging Qatar Airways’ resources and expertise, Virgin can grow its operations more rapidly, eventually leading to greater demand for Australian pilots as the airline scales up its fleet and operations. The option for pilots to be seconded to Qatar Airways also presents a valuable opportunity for professional development.”

And of course it goes without saying:

The statement by the pilots union is at odds with a submission by Australia’s dominant airline Qantas, which raised the prospect that the deal could allow Virgin to “permanently use Qatari labour at the expense of Australian jobs.”

Perhaps they don’t need it? I thought they did. Perhaps not.
Usually doesn’t take that long for IASC unless it’s a contested application in which this won’t be. Most recent example is how quickly the HND slot was given to QF after VA announced they would return it.

Unless Qantas all of a sudden say they now want to fly to Doha and want to contest the allocation. It’s a dirty trick they can play but seems unlikely at this point.

How is it a dirty trick. If QF want to fly there, it's well within their right to apply for it.

Pretty much exactly what VA did with DPS capacity after JQ put an application in. Which they didn’t get.

they didn’t end up getting the slot because they weren’t willing to operate the domestic tag as international, but I don’t think there’s any concern that VA weren’t genuine about operating those slot and was trying to be a road block to prevent JQ from getting them

It was clear they weren’t genuine, and they should have known the rules. It’s pretty basic. Who is doing VA’s applications?

It was obvious to most they just wanted to prevent QFg increasing their market share. IIRC they said exactly that in their application.
